I decided to start a new thread on my limited production S&W 44 magnum 500 made for Accusport. 1990 recessed cylinder.

I have no idea who they are, and Google doesn't answer my question either. At least for me.

Any help appreciated!
 
Thank you very much. I have been wondering who they are since I bought the gun a year ago. I looked it up in my Smith & Wesson Catalog and they spelled it with two c's that led me know where. However one C at least leads me to a firearm company.

Seems odd S&W would have retooled and made a full underlug, recessed cylinder, unfluted, 44 magnum for a retailer for only 500 units 1n 1990.

Accusport was at the least an importer for brands like Anschutz... They were located in Bellefountaine Ohio
 
There was a Georgia branch of AcuSport for quite a while. I still see one of their long time sales reps at the (formerly IHMSA) Metallic Silhouette Field Pistol/Smallbore range from time to time. He's now working for Lothar Walther, I think. Not one of the biggest distributors, but good to deal with. BTW, Ellett Bros. had a huge catalog back in '80s! The size of an old Sears catalog, or a major metropolitan phone book, if you remember such things.

I seem to recall that a quantity of 500 was required for S&W to produce a gun with special features not currently cataloged. Any distributor with deep pockets could cut a deal. We often see guns that were advertised as such from a number of large distributors. The factory also reserved the right to make and catalog clones of the original order if it appeared they were selling well. It would be interesting if someone researched all the different limited models and which distributor made the order. As far as “re-tooling”, that process is much simpler than it sounds by a programmer on a computer.

For enough money, Smith & Wesson will do almost anything that is safe.

Since the adoption of CNC mills there is basically no re-tooling necessary, at least not in the sense of what that used to mean

Usually all that is necessary is to load the proper CNC code into the mill and put a blank on there.

The 1990s was the Era of the of the Classic Hunters. Smith and Wesson made MANY full underlug revolvers starting around 1988. I am a big fan of the full underlug for the big calibers and have many. Most of mine are stainless

The interesting feature is the recessed cylinder. I do not recall a run of those. That could have been a conversion done buy one of the previous owners.

You do not mention if your 44 Magnum is a Model 29 or 629. That would make it easier to research. Also if you have the box, the 6 digit product code would be helpful for finding more info for you

Pictures would also be nice. We Love pictures, especially of unusual or limited production firearms
 
I have one I picked up a few days ago, it was terribly dirty , so I've been carrying it around polishing it at every chance lol. I was told there were 750, but 500 sounds better. Full lug, unfluted recessed cylinder, 7.5". Another picture after a couple days of polishing

That was about 10 years after I sold my business...I bought quite a bit from them, although it paid to price-shop among the other distributors before ordering standard production items...Like most other distributors they commissioned manufacturers to make exclusive items available only through them...Sometimes they seemed salable, and other times I didn't buy because they looked like flops...:rolleyes:...Ben
 
There’s been some consolidation of distributors over the years, like a lot of industries. Smith has been doing distributor specials for ages. I just picked up a Davidson Model 20.
 
AcuSport also did a run of 48 625-5s in 45 Colt. They had 5” barrels and a blue cylinder. Not much info on them. Here’s my buddies wearing a Hogue ebony monogrip.

If I remember correctly weren’t those called pintos?

What you describe sounds pretty awesome. Especially if it were a short barrel. Post some pics already!!!!!

The factory "two-tone" guns came either with a blued frame and nickel barrel, cylinder and thumb piece (pinto), or a nickel frame and blued parts (reverse pinto). Often these were special order or parts cleanup guns.

and older post, but things to add to it.

this is correct. 750 made in the production run, called the 629 Classic Magnum.
7.5 inch barrel,non fluted recessed cylinder, with Hogue monogrips. 3 had quality control with issues and destroyed, and serial numbers were not re issued. so there were only 747 made. i have #417. mine was returned to factory because one cartridge in the cylinder was rubbing the frame and not spinning when loaded, but a quick polish of the frame fixed the issue and was returned to me without destroying the gun and deleting the serial number.
