Customized & Refreshed Smith & Wesson 5906, and Accessories

I am regretfully selling my beloved Model 5906, a 9mm full-sized double-stack 3rd generation Smith & Wesson pistol. This pistol has an all-steel frame and slide, and weighs in at a hefty 36oz empty, which makes it a nice, soft shooter. The manual-of-arms is TDA (DA/SA) with slide mounted safety/decocker. This pistol was manufactured in 1998. It has a new extractor, firing pin, and springs, as well as a modest trigger job.

I intended to use this 5906 to use as a range gun, as it has an amazing trigger, but unfortunately it just doesn't fit well in my hand, so it hasn't seen much use. I replaced all the internal springs with new stock-weight springs from Numrich, then I subsequently installed a lighter Wolff mainspring. When I purchased it, most of the stainless steel controls had been replaced with carbon steel (black) controls; I had the extractor and extractor pin replaced, so now all of the controls are black. I also had new factory sights installed.

When I had the extractor replaced, the S&W armorer informed me that this pistol had had a trigger job done at some point. Nothing to change the action, just polishing of internal moving parts to smooth out the trigger pull. He stated that it looked to have been done professionally, or at least by someone who knew their business, but I don't have any documentation for it. This was an LEO surplus pistol, if that's any clue. The trigger is extremely smooth in DA, with a short, tactile reset, and crisp, short SA pull; similar to other 3rd gens, but just incredibly smooth. With the Wolff mainspring, the trigger is significantly lighter than stock as well.

The slide and frame are both in very good condition, with just a bit of holster wear. The internals are in excellent condition, and the rifling is sharp and clean. I've put perhaps 100 rounds through it at the range, and the only malfunction I've had was due to breakage of the old firing pin spring, since replaced. I replaced all the internal springs, as well as the firing pin and extractor. I also replaced the slightly worn stock grips with brand new factory grips.

I will include a variety of Wolff springs (recoil, main, firing pin, trigger return) which I purchased for the 5906.

I also have two holsters that fit this pistol; a DeSantis Thumb Break Mini-Slide made specifically for the 5906, and a DeSantis Sky Cop made for a Glock 17, which fits the 5906 perfectly. I will include either of these for $40, or both for $60.

I also have a set of Pachmayr 5906 grips (the newer, smaller ones), which I will include for $75. If you buy the pistol, I'll also throw in two older sets of stock grips (one in good condition, one pretty beat-up) and an extra grip pin. I'd planned on using those to experiment with different textures of grip tape, but never got around to it.

If you live in a state where standard capacity magazines are legal, I will sell up to 5 Mec-Gar 17-round magazines (purchased new in 2020) for $25 each, or all 5 for $100.

As many here are aware, the S&W 3rd Gen pistols (made from ~1988-2010) are great shooters, with excellent triggers; the DA pull is smooth, and the SA has a crispness and reset that rivals or betters aftermarket triggers on other pistols. The 3913 and 3914 were highly popular as carry guns, and the CS9 is among the smallest DA subcompacts available. The aluminum alloy makes for a stiffer, stronger frame than plastic guns, with only a minor weight difference. These pistols weigh approximately the same as equivalently sized M&P Shields. The 5906 is a full-sized, all-steel cannon, whose weight makes it a remarkably soft shooter.
