It is fair to say that Chicago was nothing like what either Karen or I imagined.
Karen is still getting to grips with American clothing sizes. The pants she bought a few days ago were too big, so guess who was “volunteered” to make a run to Walmart this morning to get her another pair? Fortunately I got the right size.
On the way I saw gas for $4.20 a gallon so I filled up the Explorer ($50, and I think it could have taken a bit more). Then just a mile up the road I saw it for $3.85 a gallon, $3.65 with a car wash.
Back at our motel I was just in time for the end of breakfast service. A few minutes after 10am John arrived and we were off for a tour of downtown Chicago. The buildings are fantastic and the streets nice and clean, well they looked that way to us. We then went out on Lake Shore Drive and got a fantastic view of the lake looking back towards the city.
John then took us to Portillo’s for lunch where I had a real Chicago hot dog and Karen enjoyed her Breaded Chicken sandwich. John then dropped us back at the motel where we did a load of laundry (we have learnt to do it whenever we get a chance) and repacked our bags.
Tomorrow the Route 66 adventure begins.
