The Ruger American 5.56 NATO is a bolt action rifle chambered in 5.56 and able to receive standard AR15 magazines. It is a good low cost rifle. Unfortunately, the stock is too lightweight, too skimpy, too short in pull to provide adequate eye relief, and too low at the comb to give a good cheek weld for a scope with a 40mm objective. The barrel, although fairly accurate, is rather thin and did not give me match quality results.

My solution was to swap in a Magpul stock and have a gunsmith replace the factory barrel with a match bull barrel in .223 Wylde:

The Magpul stock has a comfortable and robust feel. It also allows for adjusting the length of pull and the comb height. The barrel has enough twist to stabilize heavier match bullets and it greater mass will keep it from heating up as fast as the factory barrel.

I hope the total package is greater than the sum of the parts

Range report to follow.

Your money so spend it how ever you wish .

If I wanted to build a match grade 223/5/56 today I would start with a savage action aics for the 308 and change the bolt face for 223 / 5.56 . Then you could buy a pre fit or standard match grade shilen barrel in ether 223 wylde or ack imp chamber at northland shooters supply .

Funny thing is I bought a savage stevens 200 back in 2005 . I had plans to do a few upgrades to it as it cost only 273 dollars back then . I did change the trigger to a rifle basic 1lb assemble for hunting . Darn cheap rifle shoot several loads for both coyote and deer loads into 5 shot groups averaging at or under .500 moa and a case of older lake city m855 has averaged groups under .75" consistently over the years . Good luck with your upgrades .

If I was starting from scratch I would likely have done different.
But I had the Ruger American and it just sort of evolved

Frankly I like mine as is with a little 1-4x20 Leupold scope and paracord sling as a "utility" rifle at the cabin. It IMHO never meant to be a match rifle.

When I want something more I go to one of my CZ 527 American/ Varmint or FS.

Haven't shot in formal "matches" since College!
