AWB Dead?
NYTimes says there's not enough support in the Senate.
I wish there was a way to stop mass murder, but alas there is not.

Teach people gun safety and the value of life and if you take a human life what will happen. IF everyone could carry anytime anyplace and protect themselves would really provide a difference

You might want to pay attention to your state legislatures. Lots of fringe group laws being proposed. Most will go nowhere, of course, but a few may slip through.
The President is in MN today. Originally to discuss immigration, but now will be talking about his gun control plans. Our legislature is having hearings right now, and our governor can be a little flighty at times.
"May you live in interesting times"
"May you come to the attention of those in authority"
"May you find what you are looking for."
Purported Chinese curses, in order of severity

If you think restrictions is what we need...
How many mass murders in a year we had let's say 40 years ago. Did the gun laws relaxed since then? No, but different things changed. Education went down. Ignorance (and arrogance) went up. Definitions of right and wrong washed out. It's OK to lie now, even for elected officials (seems, nobody minds their lies even before they get elected). Obviously, Hollywood did not do enough to kill the good morals, so video games appeared. And if in the beginning kids were killing all day long unreal monsters with unreal weapons, now they are shooting people with shotguns on their screens. Do it long enough on the screen, and "You shall not murder" gets wiped out of your mind. Should I go on?

I don't think the bill as proposed by Feinstein stands a chance, but we're in for a long 4 years, during which they will certainly try to attach pieces of her bill to other legislation. We're in for a long fight.

The NRA has about 300 members of congress rated pro-gun.
Obama backed down when he signed his 23 executive actions, he pretty much just tightened up existing firearm laws.
As written the AWB will not pass. If anything ever passes, it will be a diluted much different version.
I recommend:
1. Keep writing your local, state, and federal representatives
2. Support or join the NRA

Its not dead, it will never be dead!!
Seems not long ago I was told
The health care law will never pass congress.
The courts will not allow the health care law to stay.
Obama cant win a second term.
Obama does not want your guns.
Taxes will only go up on the top one percent of earners.
Soon I can add, the assault weapons ban that will never pass!

Note that the President is traveling to Minnesota on Monday expressly to push his anti-2A agenda. He certainly hasn't given up his goal. We'd be foolish to underestimate the administration's capacity to propagandize the nation.

You bet they will. But, to be realistic, it is not just the Democrats that are for gun control with the Republicans against. It's not that clear cut. There are pro gun and anti gun people in both parties. I think it's a mistake to believe that just because someone is a Republican or a "non-lib" that he or she will be on our side. Frankly, I don't trust any of them.

And we must be especially diligent on the state level. It seems the lunatic fringe resides in state government. Witness the New England states that are passing draconian legislation. I'm waiting for the shoe to drop in my state of Illinois. I'm sure Rahm and his cronies in state government are cooking up something repugnant.

I played all those "horrible violent video games" while growing up as a kid and I have yet to go out and commit mass murder along with the hundreds of thousands of other kids who have and still to this day play those "type" of games. Using the video game industry as a scapegoat for mass murder is just as bad as blaming the AR-15. Being a bunch of hypocrites will not get to the root of the problem.

Seems to me that a high-cap mag ban will accomplish more than an AWB in terms of restricting gun rights. One possibility is a "compromise" of a 25-round limit.

If anyone thinks the gun control freaks are going away you not thinking right. As I read a story about the hearings yesterday that described Former Congresswoman G. Giffords was shot in the head with a glock. They didn't even mention the demented wacko that was wielding the polymer frame wonder. The glock picked itself off the table and took careful aim and shot the Congresswoman. That's how they think so they'll be back.

Touché. I was generalizing carelessly. I should have restricted the power of suggestion of gaming industry to the most susceptible group of people, the ones affected by mental disorders (about 58 millions of them for year 2006) see
http://www.nami.org/Template.cfm?Sec...ontentID=53155
That’s the 58 millions for whom SA might become unavailable with the “universal background check”.
Please don’t take me wrong, I had my fun with shooters: eye – hand coordination and all.
But tell me please how can I survive (let alone win) the Grand Theft Auto acting as a “good guy” in traditional sense? Things probably changed in the last years, don’t know – lost my interest. The “scapegoat” complain though sounds familiar. It usually comes from the people on payroll.

The types of people who are influenced by video games and or movies have much more wrong with them. Before the time of the big video game industry and hoards of First Person Shooter games all of these types of people were still around, they just consumed their time with other activities.....like torturing small animals. Either way the same result comes about as far as the murder of innocent people. Taking the route of chipping away at the 2A is just the easy route for those in Washington instead of trying to really find and resolve what is causing instances like sandy hook and columbine.
I dont think anyone can make the argument that Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold or Adam Lanza where stable individuals who could have been influenced by music, movies or games and then just decided to go out and commit mass murder.

AWB Dead?
There are states that are still aggressively pursuing additional bans. A massive rally is planned for Maryland State Senate hearings next Wednesday on a new bill to ban all center fire semi-autos and restrict all magazines to 10 rounds.
Mind you, Maryland is already notoriously difficult to get CCW, and most AR's require a minimum 7-day waiting period. Even with Baltimore's murder issues there were only 2 murders last year in the state involving ANY type of rifle.
If you are in Maryland or know someone up here and aren't aware of the hearing on Feb 6, please come out and show your support against this law.

Seems like our side is always reactive instead of proactive. Media people portray anti-gun legislation as a response to the latest tragedy. In truth, it's a long standing plan, prepped and ready, fueled by passions for more and more government control and resentment and/or fear of personal liberty. Our side is playing checkers. Theirs is playing chess.
We've had astonishing success in the enormous growth of "shall issue" legislation across the country. The degree to which normal citizens from both sides of the aisle have taken advantage of this freedom shocked big government folks. It also dramatically changed their rhetoric. (No self-respecting big government politician would have said, "I'm a strong supporter of the Second Amendment" fifteen years ago!). But the rhetorical changes are bogus.
Isn't it astonishing to hear the gun grabbers repeat their mantra, "No one is going to take your guns away", as they actively discuss how to do just that! They actually believe people are too stupid to appreciate the dissonance between their words and actions. It's like they think they have the ability to do a kind of Jedi mind trick thing. Sheesh!
Did you see Sen. Durban's derisive response to LaPierre's affirmation of the 2A's original purpose? Progressives are by nature derisive of external sources of authority. Their mantra, "Why should we be bound by what people said more than 200 years ago? We're so much smarter than they!"
However this current battle goes, it won't settle the conflict. Our side needs to do a better job of playing several moves ahead (to repeat the chess analogy). Forums like this one help us do that.

like others have touched upon being that this current battle may not be the big one, its the ones that are to come. There is a lot of anti gun mind sets in Washington and until that changes we will continue to have to fight for the 2A and our rights as individuals
