Thanks Jim. VERY helpful info!
I just looked at mine and set myself an Outlook reminder to renew before it expires.

I like Rick a lot. My only issue with him is that he's been on the Board for a while now, and has not actively or publicly decried the stupidity that's been thriving among the "leaders" of the Board. Had he been vocal for change, he probably wouldn't have been renominated. By not being vocal for change, he lost my active support. There are a few people on the ballot that I hope win seats, but not at the expense of the four of us, as we're the only ones, along with Buz Mills, actively and publicly calling for serious reform.

You're right, though your comment is a bit convoluted. With a 76-member Board of Directors, it's almost impossible for just a few to have a significant impact. We understand that going in. But a judge is about to decide how the NRA proceeds from here. No one knows what direction he's going to take. He could simply wag his finger at the Board and tell them to not do it again, or he could dissolve the Board altogether, appoint a Receiver to reorganize the Association, and basically start everything from scratch.
Right now, there's only one Director publicly speaking out against the crony cabal that protected and kept Wayne in power. We desperately need a few more. Since the verdict, other Directors are beginning to see the light and stray from the status quo. A solid victory for the four of us would send a loud message to all of them -- and to the judge -- that there are a lot of NRA members ready to fight for their Association.
Like I say, we don't know what's going to happen next, but we want to be in the best position to have a positive impact whenever whatever's going to happen is decided and implemented.
One of my goals in the reorganization is to see the Board reduced to 9 to 11 Directors. They should be 100% dedicated to protection of Second Amendment rights and the shooting sports, and they should be experienced business people who know how a half-billion dollar per year corporation should operate, not just guys who have been around a while and made the right friends.
At-large voting for 75 Directors + a 76th at the Members' Meeting, is insane. It needs to be changed dramatically, and right now, we know change is coming via the New York judge. Be a part of the change by electing people who are proactively working toward it for the benefit of the members.

Default You can request a replacement ballot.

Now, unfortunately, I can only sit back and watch the war!
If you are a Voting Member and didn't receive a ballot, or received one and lost or damaged it, you can call the NRA Secretary's Office and request a replacement.

John Wooters was one of the leaders, along with Neal Knox, of the Cincinnati Revolt in '77. We made significant changes then, but lost most of those reforms over the years. Being able to nominate Director candidates by petition of the members is one of the last of the Cincinnati reforms remaining, but a few years ago the Board pushed the membership to to vote in some Bylaws changes that make that much more difficult. Originally, a candidate had to gather signatures from 250 NRA Voting Members in order to get on the ballot. The new rules require qualified signatures equal to 0.5% of the number of votes cast in the previous year's election. That was about 400 for this year, and the 4 of us were barely able to qualify. It's very difficult to find that many Voting Members of NRA willing to sign a petition.
If we get a strong voter turnout this year, as we're hoping, the signature requirement could be 600 to 700 or more.
Signatures required to Recall an Officer or Director, was changed to be virtually impossible. It is now 5% of the previous election, meaning that it would require 4,000 or 6,000 or 7,000 signatures for a recall. They were shielding themselves and the membership went along with it.
Just something else that seriously needs fixing.
Jeff

GOA and SAF together raise and spend a few million dollars a year, perhaps as much as $20 million total.

In 2017, the NRA raised and spent almost $400 million!

Yes GOA and SAF are important and useful -- sometimes very useful -- but they can't begin to do what the NRA can do when it's working right. Even today, the NRA has annual revenue near $200 million.

I won't get into the milk analogy, and if you're not a Voting Member of NRA, then I'm not really talking to you, but talking to the NRA members who want their rights protected by the strongest, most effective organization possible. If you want it to be better, you have to take action to help make it better. VOTE!

Your comment is an even further indictment of the NRA. The GOA and SAF have been getting more done to protect our 2A rights than the NRA, with 10 percent of the funds.

My ballot, with only four circles filled, will be in the mail on Monday.

Hopefully with a few loud voices calling for reform some of the others who have sat silently on the board will get the cajones to finally speak up. It must be hard to be one of the lone voices on such an over bloated board, but maybe some will be stirred from their stupor or get over their cowardice.

Default Stay in the fight

I voted for the four recommended candidates & emailed all my shooting friends requesting they do the same. Quitting the NRA isn't the answer. Bitching about WLP some more isn't the answer. Starting to replace Board of Director (BoD) members is the answer. Send a message. Stay in the fight. Thanks Mr. KNOX for doing what's right. Good luck to you. You have our support.

Default It's a mistake to dismiss NRA's contribution

NRA's biggest contribution to the fight is in numbers, communication, and culture. Yes GOA, SAF, and a few others, especially state grassroots groups, have done much good work. NRA has often been instrumental in much of that work, often indirectly.
I'll mention that the NYSRPA v. Bruen case was an NRA project, but they took a back seat for PR reasons.
The most important point though is, looking at what others have accomplished on smaller budgets, just imagine what NRA could accomplish with more focused leadership.

Jeff,
Thanks for posting this, I’ll be sending in mine and my gf’s ballots as indicated! A strong, well led and committed NRA is necessary to prevent the 2A from ever being neutered or possibly repealed!

Glad I found this thread and read it. I was not going to vote, but decided after reading that this might possibly start to make a difference. So, I filled mine out as Jeff requested and sending it off in Monday's mail.

I am a 91 year old NRA member and have been a member for over 70 years. I am a benefactor Life member and have had my run in with the NRA and with Wayne LaPierre and Marion Hammer. I think the NRA was a "good ol' boy" organization that failed it's membership and was taken over by people who used it to fatten their own wallets.
It can be made whole by careful and honest rebuilding by a BOD group that really care about the Second Amendment and truth. It needs a complete impartial audit and new blood on its leadership. It can and will be a great as it once was if its leadership is honest, hard working and true to its membership. Until then I will not give them any money and will watch with great anticipation the honest rebuilding of this once great organization. God bless these men who have chosen to give it an honest try.

I'm an 80 year old and became a life member in 1962. I am currently a Benefactor member. My lovely wife is also a Life member. Our ballots are in the mail marked according to the Jeff Knox recommendation. I think the organization is worth saving. Good luck to us all!

Default Voting

I remember when all members were allowed to vote, then the crooks took over & limited who could vote so they could maintain control & bleed the NRA.

It’s easy to kick a dog when it’s down. But I do think it’s a mistake to completely discount Wayne’s contributions to preserving the Second Amendment. Ask anyone who has ever lobbied or worked in a congressional office, Wayne and the NRA are feared in D.C.

Despite him having more outfits than Herman Goring, and blowing money like a drunk sailor on shore leave, he and the NRA have accomplished a great deal for all of us. Our wise forum boss has been an example to all of us in how to conduct oneself in a horrible situation. Many here were overcome with frustrations over what was going on in their beloved organization—and who can blame them—but using this forum as a platform to boil over and scald the NRA would have been a grave mistake.

I muted my office phone and closed the doors today. And spent 20 minutes carefully marking my ballot in accordance Jeff’s instructions. My hat is off to him for his public service to all of us. There is no more thankless job than board membership of any organization.

Nothing is ever as bad as it seems (or as good either!). I have no doubt the NRA will right the ship and be a formidable advocate for all of us again.

Jeff.

Thanks brother for giving us some “hope” that the NRA will rebound. I was convinced that we were history. First time I have voted. Always knew before that the “good ol boys” had it rigged to keep themselves in power.

My thanks to Handejector and JeffKnox for bringing this subject to my attention. I would not have bothered to vote for people on the ballot that were part of an organization which has been disappointing me for awhile, I was going to discontinue my membership last October but between this forum and my local shooting club encouraging NRA membership I renewed it.
I will now send in my vote tomorrow morning, marked as suggested. Thanks to all who have posted and I wish all of us “Good Luck”.

This is the first time in the few decades that I’ve been a life member that anybody running for elected office with the NRA actually took the time and effort to reach out and make a case for support.
Both my wife (she’s a life member, too!) and I are with you!

Thank You!

I am old enough to remember, as a fairly new NRA member, the Cincinnati Revolt, led by Neal Knox. A change then was much needed, and the membership accomplished that change. Over the years, the NRA has had it's share of ups and downs. In spite of all the downs, I updated my membership level as funds permitted. I am now, and have been for at least the past 15 years, a Benefactor member.

I am glad to see WP gone. Change is needed. I have always supported the NRA through it's ups and downs. I will continue to support the NRA and do my part to effect change. What gun rights organization does the media always blast? What gun rights organization do all the anti-gun politicians bad mouth? The NRA. The other organizations are very much appreciated for the work they do for our rights. But it is still the NRA that politicians fear, and for good reason.

I marked by ballot as suggested by Jeff and mailed it last week. Change can only take effect from grass roots efforts. Thank you, Jeff Knox, for your efforts. I wish you well.

I just read an article about the NRA in G&A. It concludes that the NRA board needs to be drastically reduced in size and it needs someone to come in and reorganize it. I agree.

Mr. Knox, thankyou for taking time to explain what is currently happening with the NRA. I, like many others here, had ignored the ballot in the current Rifleman mag. My ballot is now in the mailbox waiting to be picked up by the carrier. I know this is a small thing I can do but hopefully my ballot along with many others can help you and the other reformers to be the catalyst for much needed positive change in the NRA.

And thank you Lee for being persistant in supporting the NRA and keeping the forum members informed and preventing the negative comments. It's always better to be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Regards, Dan

Done, I was not planning to vote this year as in years past.

I have been disappointed with the boards failure to maintain an ethical culture and lack of holding the executives accountable on behalf of the membership.

They are the biggest dog we have in the fight so abandoning them did not feel right.

I hope you guys win Jeff and you do what board members are supposed to do. Set the strategy, oversee management and protect the interests of the membership not the executive leaderships personal gain.

Good luck to you we need the change.

Been a Life member for many years and this was my first time voting. I voted as recommended by Mr. Knox and added Will Cain.

Glad I saw this thread, or I would have tossed the ballot in the trash. Thanks to all for your reform efforts.

I usually just toss the ballot, and honestly I thought I had. But somehow it missed the trash can, there it was alongside. I voted as you requested, I sincerely wish you success in this endeavor. God knows we need it.

I am a disillusioned Life member, I haven't given them a dime in years, but can't bring myself to quit. I've said for years WLP was no good, and as long as he was in charge I wouldn't donate a cent. Now, maybe I will. Time will tell.

Failure to vote for change is a vote for "status quo".
