Lots of it for sale on GunBroker
Try searching GunBroker.com for gold dot 38 and you'll find lots of it for sale, from individual boxes up to a full case of 1000 rounds. Most of it is packaged 50 rounds per box, which is a lot more economical than the 20 round box sold in many retail shops. You usually have to buy in quantities of 250, 500, or 1000 to get the best deals, though.

The link above and what you will find in 50 round boxes is not the 135gr "short barrel" ammunition. If that is what you want (it is really good stuff), make sure you check out whatever you buy/order using the manufacturer's stock number.

Why do you think the "really good stuff" (i.e. 135 gr Short Barrel 38+P Gold Dot) isn't available available in 50 rd boxes?

The 135 grain +P is the short barrel load.
I am looking at a 50 round box right now; Speer Gold Dot 38 Special +P 135 GR. GDHP Product code 53921
The 20 round box carries product 23921
If you contact Speer they will confirm it is the same load, only the package is different.
http://le.atk.com/general/speerprodu...ortbarrel.aspx
They don't say Short barrel on the box but it is the same load. The 50 round boxes are mostly geared to Law Enforcement sales.

The link above is for "Practice Ammo" per the product description. If I remember correctly, Speer had some LE duty ammo that failed QC that was repackaged for practice only. It's probably okay but I personally would feel more comfortable using the original product in a self-defense snubby.
Incidentally, I haven't been able to locate the Short Barrel 135 gr Gold Dots in stock anywhere either. Instead, I've been using the 125 gr +P GDHP as well as a little of the gawdawfully expensive CorBon 110 gr +P DPX. Would love to get ahold of the 135 gr Gold Dots.

I was just looking at some 20 round boxes of it today in a local gunshop. They wanted $26 a box, however. I don't remember the product code, but above the load info, it did specifically say "Short-Barrel". My snubbie is a 9mm, but I was thinking about testing some out of my 3" K-Frame. Hard to spend that much, though, when I can get Win PDX-1's at the same place, one space over, for $22. I know different guys like different stuff, and that price should not be your main concern for carry ammo, I'm just saying that's what they were.

FYI...
Grant Timberlake / G&R Tactical sets a very, very high standard for customer service. You can save yourself a bit of time by checking with him first for anything you need. He'll almost always have better prices and again, there's his customer service.
I am not affiliated with Grant in any way other than being a satisfied customer. If/when I need anything firearms related, I check his website first and if he carries it, don't bother checking anywhere else.

This stuff is currently (a) probably the best .38 snubby defense ammo, (b) very widely used by law enforcement in 38 snubby revolver concealed or backup guns -- which soaks up supplies, and (c) consequently as rare these days as fangs in a chicken. Speer says they're making it as fast as they can commensurate with quality. About the only way to get some (unless you're a cop) is to snuggle up to a reliable dealer, with good distributor contacts and a willingness to beat the bushes a little, and get 'em to take a special order.
