Default Speer 135gr SB HP ammo

Clicked on Midway's site, they had some of the above ammo in stock, ordered 2 boxes, with shipping and rounding to next dollar for the NRA it came to $60.00 for the two,and since my local dealer if backordered, well you know how that is.

I wish I knew about them before I ordered from Midway, two 50 round boxes of the SB for $27.95 a box is great,it wouldn't have been much more than I paid for more than twice the ammo.
They are in my favorites now.

Pete,

Thanks for the tip - I just picked up 2 boxes of 50 for ~70.00 shipped.

I used to like the 135gr stuff, but I recently switched over to the 125gr Gold Dots.

Here's why.

For some strange reason, they wouldn't fit in my Colt Cobra snubbie. I tried and tried and they would always stand up off the cylinder just enough so that it wouldn't close. They fit my Smiths, but the little pony didn't like 'em.

So. I bought a box of the 125gr GDs and viola'! They fit just fine!

I wonder why?

Yeah, ditch Midway and Cabelas for ammunition. ATG always has better prices for 50 round boxes than the others for 20 round boxes.

The ogive on the 135 grain GDs has a profile that puts near-full bullet diameter very near the nose, and are loaded pretty long. The .357 Short Barrel loads, and even the 158gr. Gold Dot .357s, come out of the cylinders of some of my K-frames showing a slight mark where they contact the chamber throats, though I haven't noticed this happening with my .38s, and I have some of them in some of my Colt D-frames. The 125s are shorter. Chances are, vigorous cleaning of your chambers with a bronze brush would allow them to seat, but you may just have short, tight throats in your Colt. If so, short of applying a chamber reamer or running the loaded rounds through a seater die and shortening them a tiny bit (not recommending, just sayin'), you may have already found the only solution. Too bad; the 135s run faster than the 125s do.

Yeah, the 135s are faster and probably an overall better round, but within 7 yards (or closer) I don't think it's gonna matter much.

How would this ammo perform from my 640-1 357 with the longer cylinder and longer jump to the rifling?

I agree with the caviat that your gun will tell you what it likes. I would think that typically 640s would rock with that load.

I just ordered from Ammunition To Go 2 50rd boxes of Speer 135gr SB HP +P 38spl for $69.87 shipped, thats only $9.00 more than the 40 rounds of the same ammo from Midway.
Ammunition To Go is the way to go.

The 135 gr +P short barrel load does in my 442. I haven't tried the 125 gr load.
