Speer .223 Gold Dot
I have been told that my department is going to switch to the Speer 62 gr. Gold Dot for patrol rifles. I am unable to find any information about this load or its availability, other than an ad in a recent gun magazine which doesn't say much. Does anybody know if it's available yet? The Gold Dot has always been an excellent bullet, though in my opinion not loaded to full potential in handgun rounds.

Interesting stuff Dave!
I looked at the major catalog dealers - nothing! Hell, its not even listed on Speer's home site which is very interesting unless they are very lazy about updates. If their web site is correct for updates it'll be the first rifle cartridge to go in to the 'gold dot' family which have all been basically pistol or revolver calibers until this offering.
They do show a 30 Carbine offering - not what I'd expect a police or law enforcement personnel to carry much less the Ruger single action Blackhawk - very curious.

Are sure its not the 64g? If so, then yes, I have used it and it is a good load. I was at a Winchester LE Gelatin shoot last year, and fortunately someone had some to try. Here is the data from that one demo.
HEAVY CLOTH GOLD DOT 64GR SP 223 REM 64 SOFT POINT BSHMSTR 16" 14.75 0.467 57.9
AUTOGLASS GOLD DOT 64GR SP 223 REM 64 SOFT POINT BSHMSTR 16" 9.25 0.459 48.3
The numbers are for penetration, recovered diameter and retained weight.
I subsequently purchased some and it is nicely accurate at 100. In my opinion one of the better "all-around" loads for a patrol rifle. Most loads in .223 are terrible through glass, but this one was better than most.
Hope this helps.
