Default 230 GRAIN 45ACP LEAD AMMO

Good afternoon Gents:

I have been reloading ammunition for over 30 years now so I am out of touch with the availability of "factory" ammo. Yesterday, a friend of mine purchased a Colt Gold Cup 1911 45 ACP and he does not want to get into reloading (I know, I think he is nuts also). Anyway, he went on line and the only Company that showed anything at all for 230 grain RNL 45acp was Ultramax. Ultramax is having serious issues now and can not supply their distributors like Midway, Natchez, Cabela's, etc, and so their line has been dropped by most retailers.

Most of the indoor Ranges here in my neck of the woods will not let you shoot anything but lead, so that is what he is relegated to. Does anybody here know where I could steer him to so he can purchase LEAD 230 grain ball ammo?? I have been trying to get him into reloading for a while, but he just won't bite, so he needs to find a good reliable source.
Thanks in advance!

Regards,
chief38

That's the opposite of what the indoor ranges allow around here. Most require you to use their ammo (FMJ) or no lead.

As for factory loaded lead ammo, you'll just have to do some research on it. Off the top of my head, I don't know of any source. I guess your buddy will have to make a decision.

I've shot about 600 rounds of .45 ACP 200gr. SWC (H&G 68) ammo from Outdoor Marksman. I have been pleased with it, although it is loaded pretty light and is a bit dirty. They sell "factory reloads" under the "Miwall" brand, and also catalog a 230gr. LRN load. Here you go: Outdoor Marksman - Ammunition Pistol Ammo 45 Auto

Thanks for the lead. I called Outdoor Marksman today and unfortunately their phone number is no longer a working number.

I guess he'll just have to start reloading or shoot at our outdoor Range.

You might have him try Black Hills. They loaded a 200g lswc for years, that had a great rep for accuracy.

Take a look at www.mastercast.net ... I'm testing some of their ammo and in .45 ACP all is going good. Their 200 LSWC seems equal to some loads I've shot with 4.2 grains of Bullseye underneath. Their prices are good and if you exchange brass it's even better.

Recommend that he finds a different range. Shooting cast lead bullets on an indoor range? Probably not good for his health. I certainly wouldn't shoot at a range like that myself, I don't care how good they say their ventilation is.

Chief, did you try both east and west warehouses? I hope they aren't out of business, but come to think of it, it's been 6 months or so since I got an e-mail ad from them.

Dragon, lots more airborne lead comes from primer residue than from bullets, and the pure lead bases of FMJ bullets vaporize more lead than do hard cast bullets, so I don't worry about it.

I don't know where you live or if you have a Dick's Sporting Goods store near you because my local Dick's has Ultramax ammo in stock.

This might help, do the indoor ranges allow "frangible" ammo? I can't see them not allowing ammo that totally comes apart on contact. It's just a shot in the dark. (pun intended lol) It's slightly more expensive but it's better than not shooting at all.
