Found this old box of Peters Rustless .38 cal 158 grain round nose lead ammunition. The box has 50 rounds in it. 42 have small primers and 'Peters 38 SPL' the remaining 8 have larger primers and 'Peters .38 S&W SP'L.' The box also has 'No. 3844' printed on it. Is this the famed .38/44 load? I have to assume that this box has cartridges from 2 different boxes.

I would call or write Remington and ask them. They will have the correct answer if anyone does.

From your description the box certainly contains cartridges from two different boxes. Most likely done by a previous owner, I see this a lot with old boxes where someone combined two partials to make one full one. It sounds like standard 38 but can be hard to tell once they have been mixed, good pics could narrow down the box era and which shells are most likely original to it.

The Peters cases with the larger primers are 1940's WWII era. I don't believe Peters ever made ".38-44" ammo per se, but they did make a high velocity .38Spl round and the cases are headstamped PETERS 38 SPL HV.

With the Kings Mills address on the box I would suspect that the large primer rounds are original to it but I will have to take a look at some of my collection to be sure.
Ok, went and checked. I have the identical box and it is filled with the small primer rounds so the large primer ones most likely were the left overs from another box. If I can find a box that matches them I'll post it.
