I tried the search function but got everything except what I was looking for. I'm looking for an affordable standard vel ammo for my M-41. Unless it has just been cleaned, almost every time out, it has eject/feed failures. I think it's not completely cycling the side. Usually the next round is chambered but the hammer is not cocked(the trigger will not pull). I can manually work the slide to eject a live round and feed the next round which fires and ejects. After a mag of this firing every other round, it usually starts functioning. I assume the lube/wax build-up is slowing the slide. Just bought some Aguila to try, but haven't tried enough yet to determine it's suitability. Any recommendations for some clean ammo? Or do I have a gun problem? Tks

Model 41's have tight, match tolerance chambers making them very sensitive to ammunition and dirt. The one I owned only functioned reliably with Eley Club, Match, Match Pistol, Tennex and CCI Green Tag. It didn't like anything inexpensive.

So I traded it....

This may go against conventional wisdom but CW is often wrong. I shoot several different 41s year-round. I have settled on Blazer 40gr. LRN as the load that functions perfectly in all my 41s. I know it's high vel. and standard is recommended. However, your problem sounds like the ammo isn't hot enough to fully function the slide.

Try some Blazer.....you might like it.

I tried some Federal Auto Match in my 41 the other day and it worked great. Based on what I have seen here, most folks use CCI Standard Velocity; I picked up a brick at Dick's the other day but snow & cold have kept me from trying it out. $24.99/brick, so if you have one near you check them out.

It seems like most members here don't think that a prolonged diet of high velocity is good for a 41. I don't know one way or the other, but I have ordered a recoil buffer to have on hand when I want to do some cheaper shooting. It won't hurt to play it safe.

I tried some Aguila target ammunition for a 22A I had a while back and found it to be very accurate and consistent. It was dirty and smelled like burned wire sheathing, but it gave good results on target.

Something odd happened with mine the first time out. I got it from a local GS that had taken it in on trade from an older gentleman whose eyesight had deteriorated to the point that he couldn't use the iron sights. I am guessing that it had been a while since he fired it. Anyway, I would fire one shot and then not be able to fire another unless I waited a few seconds. I popped the barrel off and was looking it over, so pulled the trigger to see what was going on. Apparently, time+dried gunk+close fitting was keeping the trigger from returning. You could pull it, release and then watch it slowly return to firing position. I had brought my cleaning kit with me so dabbed a little CLP on both sides of the trigger and worked it in thoroughly....problem solved.

That was a new one on me.

I have tried Remington .22 LR Target and have about 5-10% misfires...do not buy this junk!

CCI Standard Velocity is what my model 41 shoots best, accuracy wise. I have had no feed or ejection problems with any type ammo. I am thinking that something is having an affect on your slide function. Maybe something as simple as swapping out the recoil spring will solve all your problems. Also reccomend using a drop or two of oil instead of grease on the slide rails after cleaning them well.

Strip it and clean and oil it well. Look for all the surfaces that slide or rub against one another, and be sure they are clean and lightly lubed. Clean out your magazines with Gun Scrubber or a similar product. Once that is done, any decent standard or high-velocity ammo should run fine. What I use in my 41 is CCI Green Tag and CCI Mini-Mags. Sure, Mini-Mags are "high velocity," but the fact that Smith has no warning against use of HV ammo, and they used to sell "field barrels" for hunting, I don't buy the idea that HV .22 ammo will hurt one. I still use Green tag for 80%+ of my 41 shooting, because it is slightly more accurate than Mini-Mags. Both are clean. Both are more accurate than any of the 5 or 6 expensive loads I've tried. Federal Gold Medal Match comes very close to the CCI, but my particular 41 likes CCI best.

I was having trouble with my model 41 being ammo sensitive it didnt like any federal ammo but worked with winchester. After looking it over I ended up replacing the extractor spring with a little stiffer one. I have only been useing high velocity ammo. But have heard you need to change the recoil spring if you want to use standard velocity. Right now I am happy with my 41 it will shoot that cheap federal ammo as well as I can hold it. hope this helps. you almost need three hands putting the breech block back in with the new spring.

I shoot a M41 and it eats just about ANY 22 LR ammo there is including the promo stuff. The ONLY ammo it does not like is the Remington Target. Actually, Remington has produced the worst 22 ammo of all over the last 15 years, but in recent times it has gotten even worse (hard to believe, I know). I usually shoot the Winchester Wildcat or Federal Champion 22LR with good accuracy and relatively reliable ignition. Admittedly, the Federal Champion is more reliable than the Wildcat, but I usually buy what I can get on sale. I once bought the Eley Black box and the Eley Red box (really expensive stuff) and truthfully I did not think it was a whole lot better than the regular ammo supply I use. Maybe in the hands of an Olympic Pistol Shooter it would make a difference, but for me it was about the same as all the other ammo. I am not bragging, but I usually can put a half dollar (or smaller) size group in the black at 50 feet with my M41. As long as I can do that with promo ammo, I see no reason to spend big bucks on the high end stuff.

I'm not doing this just to be contrary, but...

My M-46 loves Remington Target and will shoot it into .5" (25 yds) with no failures.

I have been shooting the same M 41 since 1980, not always with the same barrel on it as I have several, so far the only part I have replaced is the recoil spring about once a year,
The vast majority of the ammo has been HV, mostly Win Super X 40gr, but recently I have switched to CCI Blaser 40gr HV, as it is almost 100% reliable, and a lot cheaper than Super X. No FTF like the promo Win, Rem, and it shoots good to boot.
In my opinion, the Federal 36gr HV HP bulk paks that Walmart sells are the best of the cheap ammo, but for a little bit more, I can shoot the Blaser.

One last thing that I think may have an impact on function is the fact that the majority of the cheap bulk 22lr's are 36gr, while the auto's are regulated to function with a 40gr bullet, but that is just an idea I had.

Here's my take on Rem. .22 ammo. I have a large supply of rem. ammo I bought in a bulk purchase from Sportsmans Guide many years ago. That ammo seems to be good quality and runs in my Model 41s quite well. The favorite was old Thunderbolt. When I used the old up, I bought new Thunderbolt at Sportsmens Whorehouse. It is JUNK. Won't run in any gun.
