I reload, so for my 40's I use 180 grain Rainiers over 7 grains of Longshot. For my 41's, I just bought some Berry 210 grain bullets. I haven't had a chance to work up loads yet but will probably use light loads of 296, maybe 17 - 18 grains.

My hand loads are my favorite range ammo. They are carefully developed for each gun. My loads are more accurate and cleaner than bargain products like Winchester White Box.

Other than .223 my favorite ammo for all applications is home grown for all the reasons Russell stated. When it comes to .223 I buy american eagle when on sale, and stock up.

Until I start reloading... WWW, but only because it's readily available and still relatively affordable.

Whatever major brand ball ammo is on sale, but prefer brass cases over steel or aluminum even though I don't reload.

In 9mm, federal because of the low price. Used to be S&B, but the primers are just a tad harder and I get rare light strikes. Both are priced the same.
.38 Special: lowest price, which right now are my brother's reloads. For +p, then it's Winchester semi-jacketed HP.
.22lr: CCI Mini Mag and Federal HV HP. Haven't tried my 2 bulk boxes of auto-match yet.
Don't shoot my .32 S&W, .243, .357, .45/70 or shotguns near enough to have favorites.

Federal red box American Eagle 230 grain FMJ. There is tons of it up at my department's range! The budget is such that all members can be issued a box of their choice each month (.380 ACP, 9mm, .357 Sig, .38 Special, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, 5.56/.223 Remington, some little mouse gun rounds, too). Some CCI/Speer, occasionally. Not many take the department up on this, so one can often hornswoggle the range staff into some extra; "Hey, I just put new springs in my pistol/magazines and gotta try them all out." "Hey, I got these new sights and need to zero them." "Hey, I'm pulling my weak hand shots way too far to the left and low."
God bless 'em! Our ammunition budget this year, for 755 officers, baliffs and correctional officers is $170,000! I am doing my fair share to see that none of it is wasted!
Massad Ayoob wrote an article in the AMERICAN HANDGUNNER's March/April 2012 issue about our department's guns and ammunition practices.
I handloaded prodigiously in times past, but limited range trips have seen me focus most of my shooting on the guns I carry, and right now the department is feeding me.
And that Federal is very tasty stuff!

I have fired all of the ones that I listed in the survey. And in my opinion, by far the least accurate are the Federal Champion and the Remington UMC. I have only shot Fiocchi and Blazer one box each so I haven't yet formed an opinion on them. Of the others S&B & Magtech are the most accurate followed by Winchester White Box. What is your experience with accuracy of the various brands. I understand that a lot of you reload, but you may still occasionally buy range ammo. Thanks for all the input.

My favorite range ammo is my handloads for the M 58-1 using home cast bullets from the Saeco # 412 mold, a 190 grain SWC.
Pure enjoyment!

Georgia Arms.
I reload, so I buy their "New" ammo and end up with once fired Starline brass for a third the price of unfired Starline brass.

Ammo at the Range
I had to vote other.
Most of my plinking ammo is home made, for center fire handguns. Rimfire would be CCI.
For center fire rifle, surplus or my handloads. Rimfire bolt action Green Tag, semi-auto would be CCI.
S&B has been a favorite for commercial ammo Winchester, Federal- American Eagle.

I voted "other" - except for .22 rimfire, everything I shoot is ammo I loaded on either my Square Deal B or RCBS Jr. Most of my range time is practice for matches, so the ammo I load makes the required power factor, is clean enough and has the proper bullet profile for smooth reloads (USPSA, ICORE, IDPA), and accurate enough for the game.

I generally shoot whatever is cheapest at the range. Almost all my handgun shooting is done done rapid fire for defensive practice and the only time I do attempt precision shooting is at the end of the day to see who pays for the beer. If I switch carry ammo I will shoot to see how it groups but thats about it.

Is the stuff my dads friend would bring me after every summer national guard camp.He was always good for at least 2 bandoliers of 556 and 4 boxes of 45 in those lovely plain brown boxes ,he did it for at least 3 or 4 years and before anyone cries stealing from the govt he told my father that it was what he was suppose to shoot but didnt and it really made this teenager happy .That was early 80s and Mr Larry Hobby passed in 05 may he rest in peace.

I reload for most of my shooting, but for my 9mm Makarov and .380, I shoot Tula, and sometimes Silver Bear. The price is right and I don't have to worry about losing brass.

.38 Special: 158 grain Lawman very accurate and feels close to self defense loads, 130 grain FMJ UMC, light recoil and shoots very nice out of any of my .38s
9mm: Any flavor of S&B, I started shooting it in Germany as it was the cheapest and easiest to find. I've shot thousands of them over the years and never had a problem.
PMC makes a nice accurate 9mm load, it is light recoil and accurate. The Glocks loves them some PMC.
.223: Most anything seems to work but the prefered is Federal 50 grain JHP. My Stag shoots those into less than 1" groups. The Remington 700 shoots these real nice also.
