Talking Ammo - no guns?

Anyone else buy ammo in calibers they don't own guns for?

I usually hit a few flea markets and yard sales on weekends and a surprising amount of assorted gun stuff turns up on tables. Including ammo.

I'm not really a formal ammo or cartridge collector , but over the years I've bought either full or partial boxes of ammo in calibers I don't even have guns for. Especially in odd or obsolete calibers.

Yesterday I came across this old marbled green plastic box with $2 on it. Inside 32rds of Peters .38 S&W with plated bullets. A box of Remington 30-40 Krag 10 fired/10 unfired for $5 , and a box of 7.62 Russian Nagant revolver rounds. Got all 3 for $10. She really didn't know what the Nagant ammo was because except for a few Russian letters , it didn't say anything. There were a few other boxes , but none said "buy me!"

Now I do have a few Krags , but nothing in .38 S&W or 7.62 Nagant. But I do intend to buy one of those ugly Russkie wheelguns. As for the .38 S&W , somebody's always dropping by wih one the found in Grandpa's things and wants to know if it's safe.

There are not too many popular calibers that I don't own a firearm for so it never seems to be much of a problem. That said, I would more than likely pass on a caliber that I did not own a gun in.

Ammo w/o a gun has been a curse for me.
Not knowing what to do with the ammo, I end
up buying a gun to go with it. Then I have to
buy more ammo.

Nothing wrong with that idea.............

When in high school I bought a reel tape with "Twisting & twanging" by Dwayne Eddie the young gitar player and a year later I had saved up enough mony to get a two speaker two reel tape player, to finally hear this music............

Setting Goals is a good thing.

I couldn't tell you how many times I fond a great deal on a holster. Problem is I didn't always have the iron to put into it.
Well sometimes it takes a while but eventually the void gets filled.
Then there is the great deal which you really can not pass up on the iron, then what to do? Keep it unfired as an investment or go blast away and shoot the profit into the wind.
I have plenty of guns to shoot but the one in the safe NIB keeps calling to me.
Just one cylinder full just try me and see if you wish to have a long term relationship and build some character into the blued steel.
I am still resisting the 547 NIB but it is wearing on me.
Thanks for your service Paul and good luck hunting.

For me it depends on the caliber the ammo is in. If it is something that is not at all common but not really rare I may buy it. For some calibers like the 22 Jet and the .221 Fireball I buy all that I can find when ever I do find it.

Actually I didn't really "like" your post, but do "resemble" it thoroughly. After picking up literally thousands of 9mm, .40 S&W and .223 brass I have ended up with several guns for each to use it!

If the price is right I buy it! Of course I have collected old ammo for years and old guns too so anything I don't have a use for myself could be potential trading stock (or an excuse for another gun, lol). I always check yard sales and flea markets for anything gun related anyway.

I have found some really old stuff and rare calibers now and then and some neat gun memorabilia. Guns are usually overpriced at sales but ammo, old reloading gear and other related things are often quite reasonable.

I never pass up cheap ammo at a garage or estate sale, no matter the caliber, and I have a lot of it in calibers I can't use. But who knows when I might get a steal on a Winchester 71 in .348 or a Winchester 88 in .358? I have quite a bit of ammunition in those calibers. You might also get the opportunity to trade it for something you can use.
