I have a S&W model 41, 1996.
I called S&W & the person on the phone recommended Standard Velocity in the 41. He believed S&W uses the CCI Standard Velocity as their Test ammo in the 41's?
The CCI Standard Velocity on the box reads 1070 FPS. Since it's difficult to find has anyone tried the CCI Sub-Sonic in their 41's or other .22 cal firearms? The Sub-Sonic reads 1050 FPS on the box.
The Sub-Sonic is easy to find & less $$.

Concidering that the speed of sound is 1125 fps, I would say that SV is sub-sonic. I don't know what barrel length is used to determine their velocity, but I bet it's more than my 5" barrel, so velocity would be even less than that 1070 fps. I will also say, after testing the low-end target ammo of Winchester, Remington and Federal, CCI SV is absolutely the best for my particular M41. I have done very little testing of the expensive stuff because SV runs so well and is very accurate out of my Clark barrel. I suppose it's been at least 8 years since I did a sandbag test, but the last one I did was 1/2" @ 50 yards. That's so much better than me on the 50 yard line at a Bullseye match is not even funny! (I am trusting that it wasn't just that particular lot!)

So that's my experience.

There are two main determining factors for the choice of ammo for a 41. First, will the gun cycle properly and consistently? The second is accuracy. Once you find what works best, go with that. I bought my 41 new this spring, after breakin the CCI SV works fine. If you are concerned about price, buy it by the 5000 round case where you can get the price down to to less than 5.5¢ per round. A case will last me about 6 months.

Remember, you are dealing with a gun that if it is in good condition may be worth $800 - $1000 used. The current MSRP on a new one is in the $1400 - $1700 range.

Next week I'm going to try the Sub-Sonic & see what it does. I have a small quantity of CCI S.V. that I will compare.
The 41 I have now is new to me. I had one in the past but that was a long time ago. I know, I should not of let it go.

So how did your test work out? Inquiring minds want to know.

try both of the wolf target loads and sk in std and pistol match loads. both loaded with vihta vuori powder in the same plant in germany.

I have a 1979 production M41 (A59xxxx) which I bought used in 1984. (paid $290)
I can't tell you how many thousands of rounds have gone done the pipe since, but the favored ammo for that particular gun is Federal Champion Standard Velocity. I sometimes use the CCI SV, but mine likes the Federal better. YMMV

Finally made it back to the range.
The CCI Sub-Sonic works the best in my S&W Model 41.
I was shooting at 25 feet & the Sub-Sonic worked very well & is easy to find.
We used a rifle range South of Bailey Co. called Camp Fricks or something like that..
It was used & still used, on occasion, by the military since 1917.

Back in my Bullseye competition days at Tri County Gun Club in Sherwood Oregon, my pistols of choice were the S&W mod 41 5" and two High Standard HD Military's. We used to do group buys of Eley Club, Winchester T-22 and Remington Target. They all went bang and were plenty accurate enough. On some very important matches, I would splurge on "match" ammo, which boosted my confidence, but not necessarily my scores. It's been a long time since I've looked for or bought any of the aforementioned ammunition, but a little research should help you find what you need.
