Yellow Box Winchester Question.
Briefly, yesterday was in the LGS. Saw a odd yellow box of Winchester ammo... .45 ACP 185 gr. FMJ. Looked at one... semi-wadcutter bullet. Full box. Excellent condition. Priced at $29.99... but he offered to sell them for $25/tax. What is the deal with this ammo? Given the price of ammo in this area, I'm tempted to go back and buy it. But, will it work in a standard RIA 1911? Sincerely. brucev.

If the box had a big red "X" on it,it's from the 50's-60's. Collectible? Somewhat. Shootable? Definitely! Not a bad price at all, imo.

The 185gr SWC was the hot bullseye/target round for many years. All the major ammo makers offered it. I think Federal still lists it. Good luck finding it.
Yeah , for $25 it would have been mine. My Gold Cups would have loved it.

Middle box. Will get it if it's still there.

I still have a few 12 Ga. and rifle ammo boxes on hand but
after 30 years of use they are about on their last leg with
all the wear and tear.
The .270 box has been reloaded six times. Sort of a pale yellow, now............

Actually picked up 3 boxes of .38 Special , 158gr LRN with the big red W. Like new for $10ea.
One of my favorite LGS often buys out collections , and puts out any NOS ammo they get at very good prices. Usually 1/2 of retail.

As long as it's been properly stored (cool & dry) it will be fine. I think it is most likely form the late 60's to mid 70's production.

Good on you! I love stories like this where an LGS is either dumb or lazy about what they have. They could sell the really older ammo on Gun Broker for good money. Buy all you can and post it here for sale if you don't want it yourself.

No , they know the diff between collectable ammo and ammo that's simply a few years old. Heck , some even still has their original price tags. They're very ethical and sell it to move.
I know shops that would put it behind the counter with new ammo and at new ammo prices.
Was at a gunshow this morning and saw hundreds of boxes of old ammo with current rip-off prices.
