My local range charges $18 for a box of 50 9mm rounds. These are re-loads not name brand. Same price for 38 special rounds too. Is that decent for this day and age? Curious how my local range compares to other ranges.

What prices do they charge at your local range?

My range charges $16 for a box of 50 (not reloads). I make my own so I don't buy any but I take a look at the prices as I walk by.

Generally always higher than discount stores, I guess they need the margin to stay in business. The only exception is the local range inside the large outdoors store, no markup from the ammo on the shelves.

IMO that is a horrible price for re-loads. Using Extreme Bullets 125 grain plated bullets my current cost for 38 special is right at 14 cents per round, or 7.00 dollars for a box of 50. BTW, 9mm will be very close to this cost due to the bullets basically costing the same for either caliber.

As for the local ranges in my area, none offer reloads. In addition because they rely on lane rental fees instead of selling ammo the prices for ammunition is actually fairly reasonable. Basically, you'll pay about what you would pay for the same ammunition at Cabela's but won't pay as much as you would at Gander Mountain. So, your 9mm will run around 16.99 per box but you'll get bent over for 38 special at 23.99 per box.

BTW, both local ranges had to resort to purchasing ammo from the commodities market during the recent panic and implemented rules that ammo was to be used at the range and not available for walkout customers. Prices also got stupid high just as we saw with many net sources and as a result the only ones using the ranges were those who loaded their own.

I know there some kind of federal excise tax on reloaded ammo for commercial sale these days.

Some ranges sell their own reloads that ya have to buy/use there and you must leave or turn in your brass. I think that is some kind of exception.

I don't shoot any reloads but my own. Who knows how range reloads are loaded.

Thank you for the replies. I thought $18 a box was expensive personally. Especially for re-loads.

The range i went to last (stone harts gun club) charged the same $18/50 rounds of 9mm. Cheaper than anything else they had behind the counter and i had nothing with me, so i had to buy a couple boxes. Apparently they were once-fired reloads and ran very clean although expensive for what they are.

I completely agree with you. For 9mm ammo $18 sounds high for factory ammo too but reloads, I would feel ripped off.

The range, in Philadelphia, where I shoot and buy ammo had this past weekend a large shelf full of reloads. Not behind a counter mind you but out where you could root around and pick and choose. It was almost all .38 and .357. Some one had already bought all the 44 sp & 44 mag. The price was three boxes 50 for $20.00. I don't know how much I got. I kept going back for more.

Today I was back to shoot my new 27-2 and the manager told me that he had .44 mag for me. "Go and shoot and I get some stuff ready for you." When I finished he had 350 [not 400 ed.] rounds 44 mag ready for me. Factory rounds or factory loads not local reloads.

Two hundred for all of it. He was ready to tell that he was going to give it to me for less but I told him $200.00 fine. That include everything and was less than the cheapest junk I could buy online.

I am glad to have it and I don't want this shop and range to fold up like so many others. Let them make a decent living. Small shop, it doesn't get it's hands on enough used guns to sell. And with the price of ammo people are still staying home. I am not rich and don't throw money around but supporting good shops makes sense.

At my range, the pressure is on to buy overpriced ammo from them, not bring it with you to the range. They don't allow "homemade" reloads- any rounds in plastic boxes are presumed to be homemade; any ammo they see not in factory packaging and appearing pristine gets scrutinized, spot check of individual rounds. They police up my ejected brass before I can claim them. Enforce purchased range time to the minute, no grace period to clean up.

Anyone else having these problems?

I don't mind buying a box at the range to help them keep the doors open and the lights lit but I wouldn't buy reloads.

I always plan ahead and buy plenty ammo before I go to the range. Things are not so bad any more that I would buy reloads at the range. Or factory ammo either for that matter.

You can find plenty name brand 9mm ammo on line in the 14-16 dollar range.

All ranges here are gunstores too. Avg price is about $15 regardless if the store has a range or not

Sure. It's the reloading data. In this one, for example, the reloader used 7.0 gr of Unique powder, CCI primer and a Hornady 265 gr bullet in a Winchester-Western brass casing.

I try not to buy meals in airports or at professional sports games. I seldom buy ammo at a range for the same reasons.

I do not recall ever seeing ammo at a range that was not over priced. For those prices, you should be getting at least a kiss and maybe ... more. I tend to buy in bulk (1000 - 5000 rounds at a pop) from quality manufacturers (Black Hills, CCI, etc).

The local indoor range that I go to has 40S&W target ammo for around $21 to $23 per box of 50, depending on the brand. A little more expensive than I'd like, but I usually buy a box from them each visit since they only charge a $9 range fee for as long as you want to shoot.

The local outdoor range were I use to shoot sells 50 rounds of 9mm reloads for $18. I usually buy at a local gun store were I get factory ammo for $16 before I head to the range. At the range I only buy some if I run out and want to keep shooting. They charge only $10 per gun and you can shoot as long as you want or as long as the ammo last.

I would pay that for the 38 special probably. I cant find any locally. I know I can get 9mm cheaper though. I don't reload, so for me, it seems a reasonable price.

Can't tell you what todays price is at local range but it's not reloaded ammo because they banned all reloads. Likewise I don't know todays price because I don't go there anymore (if I can help it). Could be worse I suppose... heard of ranges requiring you to only shoot their ammo.

I have never been to a range. I am not opposed to them, but living in the desert has it's perks. I would rather drive about 20 minutes to get to the unofficial range then pay. I wouldn't be opposed to going if I ever wanted to rent a weapon though.

If your range is selling reloads and requiring that you use them then you should ask a question. Does the range have product liability insurance. I would bet that they don't, nor does the commercial loader who provides their ammunition. Product liability insurance is extremely expensive for small businesses dealing in reloaded ammunition. But if they sell you something that blows up your gun and injures you, the result might be that you will own the range if they don't have it and also require that you use their stuff.

I am not required to use their ammo. They do have it available to purchase and it is re-loads. Not sure about insurance. Good to know. I always bring my own ammo with me.

I'm sure we all envy you and your ability to shoot free of charge but the OP asked about the price of ammo charged at ranges....obviously your chosen shooting venue has no such retail accommodations.

I go to two ranges with some regularity, one an indoor range and one an outdoor range.

The indoor range sells ammo for "range use only". I've never priced their ammo, but they generally carry FMJ loads from the Federal, Remington, and Winchester. They also have some commercial reloads from a company whose name escapes me.

The other range I go to is an outdoor range with a full service gun shop attached to it. They carry about everything imaginable(including some oddball calibers and hard to find loadings for common calibers) but are generally 5-10% higher than any other retailer for similar items. As an example, a box 158gr LRN 38 specials that is $21 at Walmart and $23 at most other shops in town is $25 there. It pays to know prices, however, as I have been able to find some really good deals on ammo there.

Fortunately, none of the ranges I go to(including the two above and a couple of others I have visited) care about reloads. I would not visit a range that did not allow them.

Personally I would not have a issue paying a extra buck or two extra at a nice range [or a friendly LGS] to help support them. I know they don't have the buying power of a store like Wal mart. I will not go to a place that doesn't let me keep my brass though. I am paying for it, and its mine. If Im only paying for the projectile, power, and primer usage I expect to pay much less. One of the reason I buy factory is to have reloadable brass.

My range is at $16/box/9mm either 115 or 124 gr fmj, $18/box/.38spl 130gr fmj, $21/box/.45acp. These are all Federal white box "Range Ammo", this is what I saw last night when I was there.

My range charges a buck or two more than the retail outlets. I don't buy any of it, but it is for sale if someone needs it. And if you rent one of their guns you do have to buy their ammunition. Which a lot of "occasional" shooters do.

Cheapest at range is $19.xx which includes sales tax of 9.75 percent. I get most of my 9mm and 380 auto from Freedom Munition and haven't bought any at the range in a couple of months. Also, there was a 2 box limit per day.

Correct, but at some indoor ranges, it's "if you don't buy my ammo you don't shoot". I am fortunate in that I am a member of an indoor range that doesn't engage in such silliness.
