9mm Defense Round
What is your choice in a 9mm self defense round?
Mine is either Cor-Bon +P 125 gr. JHP or Hornady 115 gr. FTX Critical Defense.
I am looking for some Cor-Bon DPX +P 115 gr. Lead-Free JHP's, but everyone is sold out.

I personally only use Federal's 115JHP+P+ (9BPLE) in all my carry Glocks. The only other loads I would use is Winchester or Speer 115JHP+P+ or Federal's 124+P or 147+P HST if/when I run out of my Fed 9BPLE.

Cor-Bon DPX +P 115 gr, Speer Gold Dot 124 gr standard velocity, or Gold Dot 124 gr +P, depending on the gun.

I like Fed. HST 124+P, Speer Gold Dot 124+P, and Rem. Golden Saber 124+P.
Out of my M&P 9C the HST averages 1236 fps, the Golden Saber averages 1126 fps. I haven't yet clocked the Gold Dots.

I agree. But it helps to have a good round to penetrate that placement, be it the torso area.

Previously, it was exclusively either Federal 9BPLE (115 JHP +P+) or Winchester RA9TA (127 JHP +P+). Neither of these have gotten worse, so they are still ok, but in light of the very recent FBI ammo award, the Winchester standard pressure RA9B (147 Bonded HP) is now my choice for defense.
This new generation of 147 grain load will both penetrate and still expand after penetrating barriers, it has excellent weight retention and it is "light years" ahead of the older 147s which were such a failure in actual use.
This new bonded load is already in service in St. Louis, Chicago and elsewhere, and with LAPD and LASD in non-bonded (RA9T). All have reported that it is extremely successful in actual shootings. It has the benefit of being standard pressure instead of +P and it has mild recoil.

It depends on the pistol. Currently I have on hand Winchester Ranger SXT 147gr, Federal 9BP standard pressure, Black Hill 115gr. +P that's loaded with a Gold Dot, and Black hills 124gr standard pressure.
You will note that they are all last generation bullets. I do not believe that you need to spend up to $2.00 a cartridge. The older generations are cheap enough that you can practice with what you carry.

+1 on post #9
Hornady CD at 1120fps (Actual) out od a 4" Glock is the minimal SD that I would ever use if looking for light recoil. It has a 4Gel test on youtube if you want more info on it.
GD and HST are great loads as well as the all Copper jackets.
Just make sure the 100% copper have enough weight and velocity to get the job done.

Depending, I use either NATO 124 grain FMJ or Remington Golden Saber 124 grain JHP. (standard pressure)

Federal's 115JHP+P+ (9BPLE) for me as well. Buy it when ever I can find it. The same load in "reg" velocity is a decent round too.

Mr. Jimmy has it right in my humble opinion. ANY decent hollowpoint properly placed will do what you need it to do. Are there better projectiles out there to use? Certainly. This cannot be stressed enough in my opinion. Continue to fire until the threat is nonexistent.

I don't carry a 9mm, but when I did, I carried it with 14 Hydra-Shoks, under 2 Glaser Safety Slugs. Never had to find out how effective they were, thankfully.

What I KNOW: The Speer Lawman 124gr. is good ammo. Good penetration and wound channel. Holds together pretty well.
Federal HydraShok is better, by a slim margin. Seemed to have more oomph behind it. Then again, when used in anger, the Federal was 147gr. And YES, it did the job; stopped the situation.
Remington Gold Sabre; it is decent ammo, but it came apart very easily when hog hunting. Again, 124gr. The jacket opened up almost perfectly; absolutely beautiful. But the lead core was both shattered and lost. This made for lousy penetration of only say 3-4" in all meat, no bones in a 100lb class hog. I saw both the Speer and Federal perform better, in hogs and homo sapiens.
I don't use the +p ammo; if I am fighting.... then I am not sending one. I will send a pair or trio. If that does not do the trick??? I will already have stepped out of the scene and be hoofing it to safety. No sense in waiting around to see just how bad things will go from there. And the extra cost is not an issue; I just shoot very well with the standard ammo.

Win. "ST" in the 9mm do not meet the "FBI" standard of penetration.................
but if you can "Live" with under 12" of penetration , it will work.
Just a heads up.
Federal 9BP standard........... no expansion
Minimum load for the 9mm was the Hornady CD 115gr at 1122 fps in a 4"........... 4 Gel c/o 15" pen. .49" dia.
Per youtube test.

Underwood 147 +P+ bonded in the Glocks and 9mm 1911. In the model 39 Federal 147 standard pressure but wouldn't hesitate to carry Corbon 115's either. All of them have good accuracy in the applicable weapons but just don't want to put the added pressure strain on the old 39.

I intend to spend some more time comparing Speer Gold Dot 124 +P vs. RA9TA, but in the limited comparison I have done so far, RA9TA seems to actually have less recoil, and also less muzzle flash. This is very obvious in low light.
