Is it OK to use Hornady Critical Defense .38 Spl 110gr FTX in an early, 1960s Model 36 Chiefs' Spl?!

Thanks!

Sure. I've shot a couple of boxes thru my 36 no dash. I carry Hornady CD a lot in my J Frames.

Y'All answered my question right smartly...thanks a lot!

I've got a 1960 Colt .38 Detective Special that should be able to handle the ammo too, I suppose...

Well, I ran a few boxes of +P+ 110 gr. "Treasury Loads" through a mid-70s M37 airweight back in the day. It didn't blow up but it did go out of time and required a trip back to the mother ship to fix it.

I still have some of the stuff around but the after-action reports on that ammo weren't too good--short on penetration--so after a few years it fell into disuse.

That Treasury Load is an entirely different beast from an entirely different loading era. I'd imagine the shallow penetration was due to too much velocity resulting in early expansion in the target.

OP's Hornady CD is a much kinder round in terms of wear-and-tear on the revolver.

Hornady puts out the standard Critical Defense #90310.....
and the +P # 90311 which is 80fps faster per the ammo boxes.

The CD standard load .......out of a snub nose will penetrate the 4 layers of levi and the Gel pack to +/- 10-12" with expansion.

A great load for the 15 oz J frames for SD use......... and even better recoil wise if the J frame is a steel and weighs in at 21 oz.

PS;
Dr. Roberts said that is one of the few non-+P 110gr loads that will work as a SD load in the snub nose........ but he also liked the "Heavier Bullets" if you could use them..... ( +P )
