I was a Cabala's yesterday and the had 22Lr. on the shelves and people were just standing there looking at it. There was 300 rd. boxes of CCI mini mags. and Federal bricks and Winchester bricks. I bought 1 box of CCI. This is the first time in 2 years I have seen 22 ammo in stock in this store.

May be closer to the end of the drought, but not quite there yet. Scalpers grabbing everything they can lay hands on to resell are going to make this last a while longer for the rest of us. Once we stop supporting these guys the shortage will be over. Then you are going to see a bunch of people with lots of over priced .22 ammo on their hands.

Funny you mentioned the .22 shortage, the Walmart in my town hasn't had a single .22 cartridge in the last year or more, today they were waist deep in .22 ammo, and all other sorts of ammo.

I bought two boxes of Federal Auto-Match, 325 round boxes for $18 each plus tax. I am hoping this means the shortage has ended.

The day prior, I spent over $100 on reloading components, powder and bullets at the largest gun shop in Virginia, Greentops in Richmond. Still haven't seen any Unique pistol powder, but they had just about anything else you would need in reloading supplies.

Gun shows seem to have a lot on the tables, but prices are still way too high. My closest Wal-Mart never has any .22 LR in stock, and hasn't had any since it first opened almost a year ago. I usually check, even though I have an ample stash squirreled away. I really have to wonder if the factories are producing 24/7, where is it all going after all this time? Is it being dumped in the ocean or what?

Nope, not here. And the end is not in sight. Oh you can find it but it is generally about as much for 50 runds of LRs as it USED to be for a box of 115gr. 9mm

I still have a small stash but since I got my new Sig 1911-22 it's hard to hang on to. I may have to break down and buy some before it comes back down.

Seems to be picking up here a bit. Seen bricks of Federal "red box" for $25.00 and "sleeves" of CCI Mini Mags. Some stores have limits and others do not.

Ive never Been with out. I have a desk job so I first open gunbot dot net in the morning when I need some. If there is any in stock at Cabelas that is reasonable I order it and ship to store for pick up. We have a small Cabelas 15 minutes east. Not saying that works for the majority, but my few friends that shoot appreciate it when they cant find any on the shelves.

And no, I have never scalped a single round. I have given plenty of it away.

What drought?

Reading the tea leaves from the results of the 2008 election I heavily stocked up then and have not been impacted. Some call that hoarding, I prefer to consider it being prepared.

The local Walmarts and others have had 22s for a while, but they sell out pretty quick. Find out when they get their shipment and get there early. Takes a little work and planning - some will do it, some don't/won't.

At a gunshow two months after the Sandy Hook shooting (when panic buying was in full swing) I chatted with a guy who told me he'd bought 200,000 rounds of .22LR. I remember thinking that it would serve him right if he had to take a bath on it, but the truth is he probably made a ton of money...

Picked up a brick of Remington Thunderbolts from Cabelas last night. Price was $33 which wasn't too bad. That was in Michigan too.

The only thing I have noticed it that yes 22's are starting to show up more often. But as I figured, and said in another thread last year, they are also higher in price where I live. Every box I bought last year is a lot higher this year. A perfect example is last year I paid $17.99 for Federal Automatch at Cabelas. They now have it online for $21.99. So everyone that kept saying they will wait until they come back down in price are going to have a long wait. The manufactures and retailers are in business to make money and know people will pay more. So they have NO incentive to lower the prices.

Oddly enough, the shortage never really happened for me. My lgs has had them in stock without fail. That being said, they limited the amount one customer could get at one time and you couldn't always get the brand you liked. They also were way more expensive than I was used to paying.

Remember back in the mid-2000s when Wal-Mart sold the 550-round bulk packs of Remington "Golden Bullet" 22 LRs for $9.95? Always in stock and you could buy all you wanted.

I've been seeing it around, a lot more, for the last few months. It had to catch up sooner, or later. Of course this comes with a price, .22LRs are much more expensive now than before the shortage.

I believe the higher prices are the new normal prices. When we look at $33 for a brick of Thunderbolts and call it good price, you know things have increased! Before the shortage, TBs were $15/brick, $9.99 on sale... Walmart pricing bricks of Federal at $28 is $9 higher than they used to be, but still the best price I've heard of for Federals. CCI standards seem to be available for around $50, that might come down a bit, but I don't think much.

For a variety of reasons (including, but not limited to, supply and demand), nothing stays the same price forever.

Me too. I'd make the drive up there from Chesterfield many times every year. Back in the pre-internet days, they had things I couldn't get anywhere else, like 28ga wads. Plus they had lots of interesting firearms, some of which I still have today.

BTW . . . it's Ashland, not Richmond.

I am looking foreword to seeing a SALE posted on .22 sometime soon.

Also seeing all the scalper / speculators get stuck with their $80 bricks of 500. They are stubborn and will haul it to another 50 gun shows attempting to "make a profit"
The same type of folks were making money in Europe in the late 30s profiteering on the Nazi coat tails with their greed.

I have sold some to friends at my cost just to stop their constant whining. I shoot a lot less now 50 rounds or less in a session.

Walmarts in my area have not had ammo since about 1998. Otherwise I see 22lr everywhere. My lgs has CCI and a bunch of others

The drought isn't over, but at least it has been raining some. I noticed just before Christmas that some .22 stock was being put out. In 6 months, I have accumulated enough that I don't buy any, even when stores have it available.

I picked up a couple pounds of unique at Clark Bros (Fauquier Co) last time i was in there. Don't know if that is usually the case or a unique situation

Yeah, last time I was there (several years ago before I moved away) I cleaned them out of .357 Maximim brass. I even asked the clerk to check in back to be sure I got it all. Now I have a lifetime supply for my TCs.

When the Field & Stream store opened here they had bricks of Thunderbolt for $24.95, limit two.

I was in my LGS last week, and he had an 8lb. jug of unique on the shelf; I almost fell over! He's had single pound canisters of Unique, but I hadn't seen an 8 pounder in a long time...

I didn't buy it, I have enough.

It is nice that a Cabelas somewhere has 22 ammo. I live over 250 miles from the nearest Cabelas. My local Walmart has had a half dozen boxes of 22 LR in the past three years. They still don't have any. The LGS has very limited supplies, and only if you shoot them on their indoor range. So, from my perspective the drought is not over with.

Now of the Wal Marts within driving distance have had any .22lr for more than 2yrs. Dicks will occasionally get some , but will sell out within 3-4hrs. LGS about 15mi away will recently have a modest amount on the shelf. But at $8-9 per box of 50rd , that's priced for actual hunting and sighting in , not plinking or high volume practicing.

If I could walk into a store at random times and actually buy 500rd-ish bulk packs for $30-ish , I'd shoot it on a regular basis and not feel too bad about it.

Im at the point that I dont buy .22 everytime I see i--like I used to. Im zero use for shorts and rat shot so never bought any. I did buy a few boxes of th ore expensve suff-but im starting to skip on that sometimes--when I see it. Also, last time WM had it--they had those that sold for $7.oo for 50 rd--I passed on those too. All I want now--are the cheap stuff.

Saw some CCI MiniMag 300 count boxes at Gander Mountain yesterday. I would guess they had 15 to 20 boxes on display. The price was not marked on the boxes or the shelf, so I took one box up to the register and had the clerk ring it up ... $29.99 plus tax. A little steep, but since I was already there, I went ahead and bought the one box.

My LGS sold 500 22 lr to known customers at $18 per 500 along with decent prices on other calibers throughout the last two "ammo shortages".

At this point I expect a lot of people have a lifetime supply of .22LR on hand; they're going to stop buying it every time they see it, and as a result the non-hoarders will see it on the shelves.

A few years ago, I was happy to have my inventory of .22 ammo on Walmart shelves. After seeing NONE for two years, I started buying what I could - usually 3 boxes at a time - when they started getting some. I bought some from Gander, PSA, local stores when I could. Always in small lots. Now, after 6 months, I have enough for a few years. So you want to call me names for that? Sorry, I'm not accepting your guilt trip.

I picked up 1400 .22lr rounds today.

600 CCI choot 'em's from Gander Mtn. (Advertised availability in flier) at 8:00am

500 Thunderbolts from Cabelas ( walk in at 8:45am)

300 CCI choot 'em's from Cabelas ( ordered 3 weeks earlier and was ready at pick up window)

Great start to my Sat Morning, followed by a cinnamon bear claw with chocolate icing and a malted chocolate milk.

Yah know you can buy 22lr online and the big brown truck will hump it to your front door and even ring your doorbell. To heck with checking the local stores every other day to buy 1 or 2 boxes. 7-10 cent a round all you want. It will never go back to the prices of yesteryear. Try letting your fingers do the walkin on the keyboard.

The Cabela's in Delaware had plenty last Thursday. CCI "Choot 'em" and Thunderbolt bulk boxes along with some high end target ammo. No crowds around the shelf either. Might have been the 10 cents a round and up they wanted for the stuff...

22lr has been on shelves around here for the last 12 months, all you want. 2 LGS and a Feild&Stream store has plenty of ammo.

I wouldn't say it's over being it's not as plentiful as it was 5 to 10 years back. I did, however, pick up 200 rounds of Winchester Super X at Wally World yesterday and also found some Remington 22 golden at my local shop (Brotherhood Arms) so got me 200 rounds of that too.
Definitely more money for these. I remember buying bricks of CCI for less than $15 back in 2000.
Would love to get my hands on some CCI Stingers but haven't seen any of that in years.

I hear reports that our local Wal-Mart is getting more bricks in but they are still selling them almost immediately. I have not seen one of the nearly extinct Federal bricks in the wild for 3 or 4 years now.

My :Hoarde: is limited to about 3,000 rounds. In fact, if I could find someone with bricks--id trade all that specialized **** for couple bricks.
