Police trade in ammo

Has anyone ever heard of this? One of the online company's advertises "police trade in" and I've never seen this before - guess it makes sense if they change supply based on date of manufacture etc. They list it as new unopened so besides being "aged" i can't see why unless the police dept. changes firearms and has a ton of ammo left over.

I would imagine that it is Contract Overrun ammunition. Police Departments, at least the three I've worked at did not sell off ammunition. It was either used for qualifications or sent to the Sheriff's Office for use in their Lab to test fire weapons.

Probably overrun. Lots of manufacturers sell that. Usually they list it as gov overrun.

No - I'm familiar with the "overrun" ammo . This is the description of some 40S&W

"This Winchester Q4238 40S&W is police trade-in ammunition that was originally issued to a department but was never used or even opened. Each case of this ammunition is still factory sealed, and contains ten 50-round boxes. Price is for one box of 50 rounds"

I've bought .30 carbine ammo, also Winchester, that was presented that way.

Departments will trade in ammo that is surplus to their needs,usually when they do a caliber change.This also happens when a particular type of ammo is discontinued and they want to make a changeover.Usually done by larger departments.I have seen a large amount of 45 GAP come available when a department went to 45acp.Most retailers will accept it on trade because of its origins,lack of probability of tampering and being stored in a controlled environment.Savings are usually substantial to the consumer.

I saw the 40S&W for sale at sportsmans outdoor superstore with that description, I was guessing it was trade in from some places switching back to 9mm. The people who had purchased said they couldn't tell it apart from new, seemed like a good deal for anybody looking for 40.

I had to project my ammunition needs about 18 months in advance in order to make sure we had ammo for qualifications and duty rounds and to satisfy our annual budget. As such, I usually had 40-60 thousand rounds in reserve. When we transitioned to a new weapon of a different caliber, we had to do something with the left over ammo and as we bought it in a tax exempt status, we couldn't sell or give it away. Winchester was always very good about sending a truck by to pick up leftover ammo, in quantity of course, and giving you a credit on your account.

Probably gonna be a lot of it in the near future due to that last statement in your post. I know of several agencies, at all levels, that are in process of changing from .40 S&W to 9 mm. I remember the transition the other way several years ago, and there was a lot of trade in 9mm around . . .

I've got a lot of good ammo that way. Such as Speer Gold Dot and Winchester Ranger. Buy all you can afford!
