$500 Ammo buying spree
If you where already in "decent" shape of "stockpiled" Ammo for everything you have, and $500 dollars to spend TODAY, what ammo would get? ( Leave out 22 Rimfire for now). regards Ernie

Pretty good amount on hand for most of my stuff, but I could use some hunting ammo for my .260 Rem and 7mm-08. Also some .45 Colt and .44 Rem Mag. Wouldn't get a whole lot of that for $500 though.

Ernie, if it HAD to be ammo and not components, it would have to be this in the following priority:
45 ACP
357 Magnum
41 Magnum
38 Special
9mm Luger
380 ACP
223 Remington (M193 equivalent)
308 Winchester
7mm Remington Magnum

Either of those. Or if there was a sale on something specific

I shot shotguns more than anything else and I'm pretty set for centerfire ammo; so, for me it would be flats of 12, 16 and 28 gauge shells.

I've been having a lot of fun with a Magpul Hunter stock on my Rem 700 308. So I'd spend at least half on Fed GMM 168 and finish out the order with more 5.56. I reload all my pistol calibers and have plenty of components at this time, including finding 8lbs of Win 231.
Usually try to coordinate online ammo purchases with a couple buddies to save a buck on shipping or catch a discount.

I would buy something else. Body armor if I wanted defensive items, a Playstation or whatever for general amusement.

Lol..good luck finding that 41 mag. Never see ammo very often..but I did find a good bit of brass and a fair amount of bullets lately at gun shows. And last week I did buy a NIB Blackhawk 41 mag with my favorite bbl length... short 4 5/8. Price was right...deal was real.
To be honest I hardly ever buy ammo. I do however buy brass powder primers bullets. I'd probably use the 500 to buy another handgun. Or in the case of a S&W..half a handgun. Saw a 25-2 in exc condition but it was priced at 1100 bucks

I reload so the price would have to be pretty low for Me to buy it.
I do have twenty rounds of Federal personal defense 357 Magnum for My carry Gun that I purchased.

After the late 2012 ammo panic, which to some degree continues today, I developed a number of interesting side interests.
I learned to use slingshots, how to whittle rabbit sticks, spears and trench clubs...I bought a sword, a crossbow, experimented with piwerful break action air guns and started reading books on bow making. I also started shooting BP guns. Diversification can be a good move in addition to stockpiling or as an alternative.

For me, a few boxes of 8 mm Mauser, a few boxes of 30-40 Krag, the rest would be .45 colt. I already have enough to get me through anything bad with/ .45 and 9 mm.

Hmmm, first thing that popped into my head was buy ammo for the two or three guns you like to shoot the most.

Not at all far fetched. When we first moved up here from Laramie I could step out the front door and pop a gopher with my .22 Now there are so many new places I've switched to my wrist rocket and a Browning break action pellet pistol. I don't worry about hitting the neighbors, and it's cheaper.
I know the OP wanted to avoid .22, but I'm with Bat Guano. My LGS hasn't had any for five years. He finally asked his supplier what he'd need to do to get some. "If you'll buy these four limited edition rifles I'll let you have 40k rounds." Done so I've got some.
Other than that, I'd buy more pellets, .38, .38+P, .357 125 gr., .44 mag, and .50 mag (heavy on the .38 I think). I've been considering picking up a Freedom Arms Model 83 in .500 Wyoming Express so I'd likely stock up on that, too.

Aside from .22 it would be .38 special and .44 special. These are for target shooting my S&W 686 and Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley.

I am stocked up on reloading components, pistol ammo and Rifle ammo. So I would buy shotgun ammo. I have 28 flats (10 boxes), mostly of 12 and 20, so $500 would buy 5 flats of AA Super Sport 410 or 28 gauge!

I am also into archery (traditional bows) and air guns. When not at my gun club, I have a 20 meter archery setup in my back yard, and a 10 meter air pistol range in the basement.

I'd go for .45 ACP, .38 Special, .44 Special and 9mm. Range ammo only; the good stuff is too 'spensive, and the range ammo will always work if necessary. 9mm and .45 has gotten reasonably priced lately; .38 is still available, but the .44 Special isn't really getting better.
<sigh> CCI is no longer making Speer Gold Dot in .41 Mag. Quitters.

If you're good on all calibers for the range, I'd actually use a healthy chunk of that $500 on self defense ammo. Pick up more than you "need". With all the craziness in the world, and potential ammo scares at home, having enough SD ammo to allow occasional rotation/practice might be a wise thing to have. Many CCW carriers seem to only have enough for their gun and a couple of spare mags worth on hand.
Right now the pricing is better than it's been in a while. I'd even pick up a couple of boxes in calibers for guns you "rarely" carry. I've done this exact thing over the last year. I'm now set for the next decade if it comes to that. Buying online, $0.50 a round is pretty easy to find. It may not be there next year.

I'd buy .38 CCI shotshells. I've heard rumor that they exist, but I haven't run into a box since before the stegosaurus.
I figure $500 should get me at least 2 boxes of 10, which I should be able to sell for a handsome profit!

I can get 1,000 rounds of 9mm for $200, so I'd get 2,000 rounds of 9mm and spend $100 on 7.62x39mm.

I have a wee bit of LAX ammo, but Georgia Arms also carries 41 Mag. Out of stock at present.

I was very low on 22 LR when the pandemic hit. Only 4 or 5 bricks. Found a brick at Academy recently about 34 bucks. And a tub of REM 22 at Dicks.
I have 2 Kimber 84's in 7mm 08 and found 10 boxes of REM for them in an old hardware store. I bought them just a few weeks before the ammo pandemic hit. I went back there to buy 22 some one had cleaned them out.
I have a 270 and a 300 WBY mag with enough ammo to do all my remaining deer hunts.
I'd probably buy some 5.56 and or reloading supplies for the 45 acp.

If it was available, and I had the $500 for it, I would absolutely get about $100 worth of 300 BLK Subsonic.
