Default anyone use silvertips ?

have used it in 9mm in 3 different guns. it always fed 100% and seemed accurate enough . supposing it does not have the stopping power of some new breed of wonder bullets but i will take the less recoil & good accuracy over the higher stopping power % .
hoping they are still making it . would buy a few boxes if they do.
and as a added bonus .... the silver bullets will do in a werewolf , of which my city has several !

It is still available. Gun Broker has it for $42, Cabelas for $48.

I carried it 20+ years ago. Good stuff. But newer tech ammo is better, and cheaper. Fed. HST and Speer Gold Dot are every bit as accurate and no difference in recoil.

Plus, HST and Gold Dot are a lot cheaper:

Gold Dot under $25:
50 round box - 9mm Luger Speer Gold Dot 115 Grain Hollow Point LE Ammo - 53614 | SGAmmo.com

HST under $30:
Federal Premium Tactical HST 9mm 124 Grain Hollow Point Ammo

I used it in several guns. I still have Silvertips loaded in one gun. I think it's my Colt Cobra.* I don't buy it any longer simply due to the plethora of high quality defensive ammunition available at lower prices.

*In a fanny pack for bike riding. Haven't taken it out for awhile, which explains my uncertainty. I always put that one away loaded. You can do that when you live alone.

I am too cheap to spend that much money on a Winchester SD bullet that should be 25% that price.................

I just fake the BG's out by putting a little silver paint from my sons model airplane jars, on the copper jacket bullets !!

Instead of ST's just buy their standard USA brand JHP ammo. Same bullet minus the nickel plating.

What he said!

Don't believe it? Scrape the plating off a "Silver Tip" pistol bullet and you will find a normal Copper (Gilding Metal) jacket underneath. This does not include the .25 ACP, .32 ACP .380ACP(?) or .44 Spl. that have Aluminum jackets in the "Silver Tip" line.

I glanced at Winchester's web site and did not see if for handgun ammo.
One of our sons is a LEO in one of WI's larger cities and his department used to issue 9mm Silvertip.
Now he uses the Ranger +P+. I'll ask him if he still gets Silvertip.

I know I still have some in my ammo locker. No real reason I keep it, I just haven't gotten around to shooting it.

I agree Winchester Silvertip ammo is a great load. They are loaded in my Sig P320 right now. I have less than 2 boxes left. I think I'm going to change over to 124gr Gold Dots next for price and availability. Like them too.

I'm my S&W M640 I will shoot nothing other than 145gr .357 Magnum Silvertips as long as I can get them. Only 3 or so boxes left there. It's scary accurate in my M640.

Just raided the ammo locker:
Winchester Ranger LE ammo:
RA9TA, 1250 fps. That's 357Sig territory.
RA45T: 930 fps.
Didn't find any Silvertip so I musta blasted it already.

I still carry it for my .38 super carry gun. I can get I reliably in that caliber and can not reliably get others.

I came across a deal I couldn't refuse on a bunch of it in 45 ACP 185 gr some years ago. I still use it when I carry my 1911. Chrono 947 fps from 4" bbl. Very reliable, not bad to shoot, accurate @ 25 yds, expands enormously in a phone book.

I carry them in my 60-15 for my "anti-personnel" load (not to be confused with my anti-bear and anti-snake loads). I have about a box left. They seem to have a bit more boot than the Speer SB .357 load, which is a glorified, suped-up .38.

There's so many .357s, that do so many things, I have a hard time choosing. Maybe a speed-strip of each? A different round in every chamber?

A detective checked on shootings in this area with the 145 grain .357 ST. He said the results were almost too effective, but I gather he's squeamish.

I like that published chrono figures show it giving about 1200 FPS from a three-inch barrel, about 1300 from a four-inch.

I think it's fine for men and coyotes, cougars, etc. Might want more penetration on a bear.

This is the only ST load that I'd seek out. I think Gold Dot and HST are better in other calibers. And I think Federal's 158 grain JHP Hydra-Shok is a fine all-round .357 load.

I still have a box of .357, but no longer have a gun that shoots this caliber. I carry either Speer or Hydra Shoks in my guns now.

Years ago I picked up at various shows close to 1000 round 9mm Silvertips at $9.00 a box of 50. Although I've never have had the need to use it to defend myself, in my 226 it shoots like a laser and have no doubt it would get the job done. I also have a stash of +p Golden saber but honestly, the Silvertips are more accurate and I've never had an issue with them what so ever.
Just my .02

I carry Winchester Silvertip 175 grain 10mm in my Colt Delta Elites. It is getting harder and harder to find. About a year ago I attended a local small gun show. A vendor had twenty boxes of it at $15.00 a box. I bought all of it.

I have half a box of 44 special Silvertips left from 30 years ago.

I'm keeping them in case we have a vampire problem here in Northern California.

True as of about 10 years ago. ALL Silvertip loadings now feature a nickle plated copper jacket- the aluminum "low velocity" jacket is no more.

I shoot/have shot them in 38 spec., 44 spec., 45 LC, and have seen them in 9mm (just the other day at the local shop) Probably better ammo out there but it ain't bad. But then I am still a Hydo-Shok guy. I didn't buy the 9 because it was a little over a buck a round.

Default Silvertips

The only round I use in my 9mm's is the 115 grain Silvertip. If there is a hotter non plus p round on the market I am not aware of it. It is a phenomenally accurate round, and they function flawlessly in my glocks and sigs. They redesigned the bullets several years ago so I am not so sure I agree that there are better "more modern" rounds out there. I am not knocking the other stuff I just don't think the modern Silverton gets the credit it deserves. It is a hot, hard hitting round.

Only Silvertips I still used would be the four boxes of 40S&W by federal and the ones I bought for my 44 revolvers 200 grain bullet brass case. I've never see any of two mentioned at a local gun show. Frank

Works good in 4" Model 29 for me.When riding my ATV by. Corn field a doe stood up and was slow to figure out what I was.At about 35 yards the 44 Mag entered the right shoulder and traveled diagonally to end up just under the hide of the left hip laterally. She looked surprised ,made about five steps and collapsed.Expansion was great.Doe weighed about 80 lbs.
