Old winchester lever action ammo, help.

"I own a .38-55 Lever Rifle and the ammo is not readily available now or when I purchased it."

Donnelley's manual of cartridge conversions recommends forming .38-55 cases from .30-30 brass by fire-forming, but they will be slightly shorter than .38-55. Very simple to do. Would be the same procedure for forming .375 Win cases. Much cheaper than paying the price of .38-55 or .375 brass. .30-30 brass is versatile for forming other odd sizes. I make both .30 Remington and .303 Savage cases from .30-30 brass. In an earlier posting, I said it also looks like making .401 Winchester brass from .30-30 would be feasible.

I have found when loading scarce ammo of several calibers, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet. Buy what you can little by little, get your dies and SAVE, SAVE, SAVE your brass.

You have to remember that once you have expended the effort to form a batch of some oddball or obsolete cases, you don't have to do it again. But you do have to take good care of them so they can be re-used many times.

E. A. Brown is currently showing new Winchester brand 375 Winchester cases available for sale. 50 cases for $59. It looks like if you want the ammo, you're going to have to roll your own.

Ed: I have PMed you with an offer to sell a box of ammo and a never used 3 die set of Redding reloading dies for the 375 Win. ........
