Default (Relatively) Affordable 148gr Wadcutter Match Ammo

I figured I share this because it's quite a bit below normal market price. It's 148gr Wadcutter Gold Medal Match @ 19.99/box. For the reloaders it's not a big deal but for those of us who don't this is a pretty good deal.

Here is the link where I found it: Federal Gold Medal 38 Special Ammo 148 Grain Match Wadcutter

Thumbs up AMMO

Not bad at all. If I didnt have two cases of Winchester yellow box and a case of my own loads I would be on those like a goose on a June bug. Havent seen any around here anyway. If I did I might bring home a couple boxes just to try in my 52,but I dont see her doing any better than she does now. THANKS for sharing.

I'm happy to share! I just acquired a 14-3 and I am excited to try some 148gr wadcutters. From what I read, it is supposed to be a perfect match.

Unfortunately, since 2008 no .38 Special ammo has been reasonable. I used to but 50 round boxes for under $5, that will never happen again. I wish I could help but I have not seen fairly priced WC ammo in a very long time. ( I reload)

The last calculation (a few years back) 148 grain wadcutters can be reloaded for about $6.50/50 rounds assuming you do have the brass. That is a very reasonable way to go and if you save $14 bucks per box, after less than 100 boxes the equipment will be paid in full.

i do not know any cheap Factory WC ammo - and even at the high prices, it's usually hard to find in LGS's

I also used to buy .38 Special wadcutters at less than $5 per box - in the 1960's! On an inflation adjusted basis, ammo is cheaper now than it was then.

What does inflation have to do with not wanting to pay $20+ for .38 Special ammo?

I just paid 30.00 for 250 Hornady 148gr wc. So 6.00 for 50. Powder, what's 3gr of 231? .02. Primers, 3.50 per 100.
So, 8.75 and that is not careful or bulk buying.

I paid $18.39 a box, delivered, for the Federal 148gr wadcutters a few days ago. I'll get $2 a box back in rebate from Federal, so that makes it $16.39 per box.

I'm a TSUSA Prime Ammo club member ($95 per year). Shipping is free on all ammo, whether I buy one box or a case. I've already saved twice the cost of the membership in orders, and I have over 10 months of membership left. I'm making a point to spend at least $200 a month on factory ammo during my membership.

I am a reloader, but I stock thousands of rounds of factory ammo in all the calibers I shoot (32SWL, 9mm, 38Spl, 357, 40S&W, 10mm, 41Mag, 44Spl, 44Mag, 45acp). While I've never had a reload "problem", when I take friends shooting I always provide factory ammo, instead of my reloads, out of an abundance of caution.

I buy Remington 148 gr. HBWC for $0.07 in case lots of 2000 and load them in R-P cases with WSP primers and 2.7 gr. of Bullseye. Approx $5.00 for 50. Can't go wrong with that.

That's a pretty good price for a top quality product. I reload my 38 specials so I don't need more.

GA Arms sells 148 grain .38 Spec wadcutters for $13.50 per 50 (reloaded ammo) or $16.50 per 50 (new ammo). Good prices.

Be careful about ammo age. About 7 or 8 years ago I bought some Fed Match 148 gr HBWC os "special" for a really cheap price. Store had just maybe a dozen or so boxes. I shot one box a few weeks later and I noticed all the brass has speckles (little dark spots) on them, and the brass was a little tarnished. It all shot O.K., but over 50 % of the brass split, lengthwise nearly 50 % of the length. I don't know if it was old or possibly bad storage somewhere. I had set it aside for match use, but just shot it up in practice.

To think that I actually recall a time the .38 Spl. WC and SWC were as common a .22 ammo in the LGS's of old.
Nearly every shop had some local licensed reloader's boxes of .38 WC's and SWC's set up near the register.
The LGS I worked in as a teen in the 70's had boxes of such reloads for $5, and later, $6. It was accurate, quality stuff too. I knew the loader, who was very attentive and used a Hollywood press.

Bringing back in the box of brass would credit you 50 cents on the next boxe(s) bought.

Sorry - ol' guy ruminating here.....

PArtly because very few shooters under 55 years old even knows that it exists, or what it is, let alone how useful it can be.

Shot a lot of wadcutters out of Model 10s during basic LEO training in 1976 and then during annual qualification. Remanufactured ammo by 3-D , sure a lot of Old school officers remember the brand. If I recall correctly it was 158 grain wadcutter ammo?

Will have to order some of the Federal.
