If 9mm ammo has improved, and I think it has. I don't see how 40 hasn't also benefited.

40 S&W is just fine by me, I like it!
I think 40 is a nice balance of size, speed & capacity.

What's wrong with the 40S&W? Nothing that a dose of testosterone won't fix!

Been a fan of 9mm for a long time. My father was a WWII veteran and seemed to have plenty of respect for the 9mm, as did veteran Uncles. In fact, it wasn’t until the cult of Jeff Cooper took over that the 9mm was looked upon with disdain...even the US Military wanted to go 9mm after the war.
My first centerfire self defense pistol was a Nazi surplus Polish Radom. Later, when I graduated to a Browning HiPower, most cops were still carrying Model 10 38’s.
But recently, I couldn’t resist the cheap police 40’s. Since I like Glocks, I bought a like new G22 Gen4. Came with working night sights, for $319.
At the range, I started out slow, confirming function and POI/POA...and checking out the, uh, “snappy recoil”.
Before long, I was punishing the steel plates my club has, rapid fire. Turns out 40 isn’t so snappy after all. Really, it felt pretty close to my G17 using +P+ 127gn Ranger. Negligible.
I liked it so much that the Gen4 is doing home defense duty now, loaded with 180gn HST.
BTW, I got my G22 from RecoilGunworks in Indiana. They have quite a few police surplus pistols of various types. The order process was easy and fast.

I own two .40 S&W handguns, a Glock 23 and a Kahr PM40.

Both are reliable handguns firing an effective service cartridge.

Better than the 9 Parabellum ? Not much if any, in my opinion, easier for my fat fumble fingers to load, though.
