A SHOCKER
Being confined I have a lot of time on my hands. They keep taking my phone away but at one point I had it last night for awhile and was looking around seeing what ammo might be available--- Almost NONE however one search was for WINCHESTER .38 S&W only one vendor listed it but was out of stock, of course.Thing is, while it is pricy on a regular basis their price was $42. a box most off brands start at $20. a box and go up to $35. for Remington -- Wow -- oh yes get 10 boxes and the price drops to only $38.00 a box, all this plus shipping Im sure. Sure is nice to load and have your own.

Locally around here ammo is hard to get especially since wal mart decided to be PC and stop selling handgun ammo.Local gun shop started stocking more ammo than he normally carried. Told him it's a good start. Told if things go the way I think they will then you should be stocking it by the case, and selling it by the case. My neighbor's wife picked up a S&W Sheild in 9mm,but couldn't fins any 9mm anywhere. I broke into my stash and gave them a box of 9mm. And a few online ammo companies to see if she could get some there. Her Husband said they got some win white box for practice an some for self defense. Told them to get the speer gold dot as that is what I use. Frank

Personally, I find it strange that ammo availability is still so low in certain places. Honestly, who is even buying this much ammo? I imagine that the pandemic gun-buyers probably just bought a box or two of FMJ then called it a day, and I would think that most firearms enthusiasts would already have a decent supply of ammo to get them by, yet ammo is still selling out online?

You have to actively search it out. Ive "liked" a number of local gun shops on Facebook. When they get ammo shipments in they post about it. There are a few that aren't price gouging *******s, and often have "100rds per caliber per customer per day" rules, so everyone can get some. My son and I just bought 4 boxes of 9mm at $13.50/box, 2 boxes of 38 at $18.99/box, 200rds of 223 at $9/box and 2 100rd boxes of 7.62 at $24/box. His whole shipment was gone in 1 day.

Funny, this time 22 ammo is still available, along with shotshells and regular rifle hunting calibers (at least in my area). So my focus for now is 308 Win, 22 LR and 20 Ga. Prices here have been unaffected and it's all still available. Each trip to Walmart I pick up a box of whats on the shelf.
I'm not stressing too much just yet, will save that for the election :-0

22 isn't easy to find by me. Some hunting ammo isn't either. 30-30 is hard to find even!

I started reloading ammo in 1972 because I had 2 kids to feed and house payments to make, so rolling my own was a necessity if I was going to be able to shoot. Started casting my own bullets in 1973 for the same reason. For many years I produced most common handgun ammo for about the same cost as .22LR in the stores.
Now 48 years later, I can afford pretty much anything I want or need, and I'm still reloading. Still producing handgun ammo for about the same cost as .22LR in the stores.
So I started out of necessity, and now I continue out of necessity. The only difference is that now it's more a matter of being independent of the suppliers, much less of a financial decision.
YMMV

Yeah, I do the rifle calibers also. .25-20, .32-20, .30 Carbine, .30-30, .30-40, .33 WCF, .308, .30-06, .348 Win, .44-40, .45-70, .45-90, .45 Sharps Express. Never owned a .375 H&H, but I'm all set up (dies, bullet mold, etc) to keep an old friend supplied.
Some of those are still available at times, but frequently cost $2 to $5 per round for factory ammo. Some haven't been available in decades, so producing my own is the only way to keep the vintage rifles shooting.
Actually, over the years I have come to enjoy making ammunition just as much as the shooting. Today's ammo prices just make me happier to have the ability.

I have to agree with Logo ... I started reloading in '77, and it is what has kept me in rifle and pistol matches! Two weeks ago, I shot a GSSF match in SW Virginia and stopped at the Cabela's and Gander Outdoors that I passed.
At Cabela's, I was more interested in components: powder was non-existent, they had one brick of CCI LRP, but they had it priced the same as benchrest primers. They didn't have any jacketed bullets that I was interested in, and the cast and plated bullets that I could be interested in were listed at twice the MSRP!
Meanwhile, at Gander Outdoors, all they had in handgun ammo was 3 boxes of 32 S&W, not even S&W Longs!
I have a back order of a thousand Federal 9mm 147gr FNFMJ that is supposed to ship next weekend, but I'm not holding my breath! If the weather holds later this week and the temperature isn't too hot, I will probably start casting some bullets for the 9, 38/357, and 45.
Out of curiosity, can anyone recommend any gun shops in the vicinity of Talladega?
As always, thanks in advance for your help!

I think it is a lot like the TP shortage.
People hear it might be hard to come by, go out and buy far more than they normally would and create the very shortage they were worried about. Which causes more people to panic and buy all they can whenever it is available.
With both TP and ammo there is normally a pretty steady demand and the manufacturers have just enough factories and machinery to supply that normal demand. When demand suddenly spike they cannot increase production very much unless they invest in more capacity which would just sit idle when demand returns to normal.
In the case of ammo the shortages have become predictable enough I am surprised some company didn't fill a warehouse with it when it was cheap and plentiful and resell it when supply dries up. Of course if they did that some people would accuse them of being evil price gougers and never do business with them again.

I have pretty much everything I need, & just sold off some extra. I mostly shoot handgun & reload my own.
I'll head into the garage in the morning before it gets to hot, put on some good music, and crank out 50-100 rounds in an hour or two on my Rock Chucker.
No rush, just pure enjoyment & a sense of accomplishment.

My wife shoots a lot of 9mm, she's training for competition, and it's getting very hard to find. I happen to have 2 guns that shoot 357sig and since the round isn't popular I can find it in FMJ and JHP and the prices haven't gone up from months ago. I like 357sig for self defense better than 9mm anyway.

I read a few articles about this, apparently its tge perfect storm for ammo shortages. 1. Gun sales, esp new gun owners is thru the roof due to the social unrest/fear about Biden banning stuff(whether realistic or not) 2. Since the USA has ZERO lead smelting operations due to EPA, it comes from China. We're in a trade war with them. 3. Copper mining was ground to a halt due to COVID. 4. With walmart ending significant ammo sales, no other stores had the money or balls to take on the millions they spent to sign contracts with ammo distributors. Those distributors never placed the big orders because of this(which was stupid in retrospect).

Last night I went searching through the grudge for a spool of string trimmer line.. Figured I would use a flashlight as in the daytime I can't see the forest for the trees.. Anyway I happened to see a large ammo can I didn't remember placing in there. Figured it was empty.. Not hardly. Opened it up and ;lo and behold there was a bunch of 9mm Remington ammo in it... 30 boxes...hardly remember buying it..but some was 147 gr FMJs for a surpressed firearm. I mentioned it to the fellow I got the 66-1 from. He offered me 25 bucks a box for it...25 bucks??Sales receipt was in the box and it was 7.49 a box, There was also 500 230 gr FMJ 45 ACP bullets and a partial box of Speer 260 gr 45 Colt bullets as well as a bag of Starline 357 brass. . I may have to sell him some of the 9mm ammo. -25. bucks a box is ridiculous.. I also found an old Colt 1903 32 auto pistol in another can in parts along with the receiver and all the internals for a Winchester M-37 youth model 20 ga. I did kinda know they were out there though. When I was in Cabela's the other day the handgun ammo shelves were essentially bare(2 20 round boxes of 38 super at over 40 bucks and a box of 41 Mag Cowboy loads for 32 dollars). That was it much rifle ammo was gone also...and the bullet shelves were essentially a forget it too. Primers they had...Large Rifle mag Federals nd large pistol mag Federal...both over 40 a box. Ammo for handguns is gone guys..really gone

Re Load
If ya wanna be a shooter, I think ya wanna be a loader. But beware, it is a hole deeper than for a teenager who likes girls, surf boards, dirt bikes, or studying medicine. Your grades may suffer.

I've been told by 2 different ammunition manufacturers that the problem is getting primers. One company in NC said they had over 5 million on back order and keep getting in small amounts here and there. The other company in SC supposedly has over 20 million primers on backorder with several vendors trying to get anything they can. I wouldn't believe it if I had not seen it, but primers are going on the large auction site for $100-150 per k. Its unbelievable, but its right there. Thankfully I had enough ammo loaded to last me at least a year and primers and powder to load for another year. What is concerning is where will the price point land when availability is back to normal. I'm betting it will be nowhere near what it was 6 months ago.

Skeet028, while I totally agree that $25/box is ridiculous, its reality. In 2008 I bought 1000 rounds of Win 9mm at Walmart for $163....about the original price you paid. As of 3 months ago, I could still routinely find it at $10-11/box.
3 months(since Memorial Day/George Floyd/Seattle/Portland) makes a hell of a difference! Its like gasoline during a hurricane, only the politicians don't care about the price gouging!

Yep...I agree. Just before the big push this time I bought 2000 rounds at Cabela's in Billings...no tax in Montana. The price on sale was 7.99 box. if I remember correctly At that price I had to buy it so I did...and I don't hardly shoot 9mm. If I had remembered I had the ammo I found in the garage...I wouldn't have bought it. I guess that fellow is gonna get 10 boxes......And I guess he's gonna owe me a favor ...again. LOL! I also have a few boxes of 380 but not gonna sell it... Unless I sell it with the Mauser HSc

I’m now just waiting for the craziness to end on ammo prices before even thinking of buying more, and using more reloads in the meanwhile. I can weather at least 2-3 years with my current supply of components, so hopefully things will change in the next 24 or so months.
Otherwise, There’s always golf, and a 9 iron is pretty good for home defense too.

I have been watching Ammoseek for its entertainment value. Over the past few days 9mm brass factory ammo has dropped at bit; gone from a minimum of $0.70 per round to $0.40 per round this morning (MidwayUSA; 1 500 rd case limit). Things may be getting a little better, but I'm still glad that I reload and also that I'm pretty well stocked. -S2

The Nurses - but they are all so damn cute--- dont want me to disturb the floor, and I am supposed to be resting.. On the .38S&W--- not the most poplar cartridge, so they must not be loading it. Even so, I am at a loss as to the price of the Winchesters.??? Will be loading some 15 boxes when I get home geting ready for the range when they turn me loose. At 2 or 3 boxes a trip they wont last long.

Fits me as well-- I preached 50 years ago about the availability of ammo, regardless of the reason-- I think primers were 25 cents or less a deck back then. Dont care what you have, if you cannot find ammo, then you just have a box of paper weights. keep your skills up.

Was in Wally World and cruised by the sporting goods dept. Yep,the gremlins are at it again. No 22 ammo. Have some of the Czech 22 ammo, buddy and I split a case and shot decent so picked up some more a couple years back. Not exactly swimming in 22 ammo but enough to last for the forseable future. Frank

If you really want a laugh check out CTDs newest ad. Boasting they have restocked their ammo...100 rd box of WWB 380 FMJ...$149.89. 50 rd box of Armscor 380 FMJ...$69.89. 50 rd box of S&B 9mm 115gr FMJ...$59.89. Over a dollar a round for 380 and 9mm FMJ range ammo sounds right...🤣

But its in stock. If I was a new gun owner in one of the many US cities that have suddenly gotten a lot more dangerous in the past few months I would be glad to have the option of being to able to buy a box of ammo even if it was priced six times higher than it should be.
Glad I stocked up when prices were low and ammo was plentiful.
