Federal 12 Gauge Buckshot

Following the advice of Armorer951 I purchased Federal Law Enforcement Tactical Flite Control 00 Buckshot.

Test fired it on a B-29 Target at 25 yards using the Remington Model 31 Shotgun with the chopped 18.5" barrel.

WOW ! 7 Buckshot in the center (9/10 ring). 1 Buckshot in the upper right chest, and 1 Buckshot in the right shoulder.

I will purchase more of the awesome load.

Their Flightcontrol #4 Buck is also impressive. Even the wad is on target at 15 yards.

I use the similar load with #1 Buck, which is unfortunately discontinued. It's a great round that I like because of the reduced velocity. You can find photos of my patterning in my KSG here.

Almost too good with Flite Control.

I find that in my 20” 870, I always get a single flyer OO pellet that wanders off at 35 yards or when shooting Flite Control. That flyer pellet generally stays on a B27 type silhouette if I shoot out to 50 yards.

I bought some Fiocchi OO for Shockwave to open up the pattern a bit versus Flite Control. Highly variable, with occasional flyers off a silhouette beyond 15 yards. Flite Control is very tight in my Shockwave, comparable to a 20” barrel. Reinforces the need to pattern shotguns.

Paul Harrell did an interesting test video on what he called the ninth pellet flyer phenomenon. Check it out here. The upshot is that perhaps that ninth pellet is one too many in the 2-3/4 inch shell and the eight pellet loads eliminate that flyer.

The "Lucky-Gunner" swears by the Federal 12G Buckshot load for HD.
I certainly dont agree w everything that this guy has to say , but I I do agree on this claim.

At 15 yards , I can put "everything on paper , mostly in the center". Using my MB tactical 500 , this is a credible home defense combo.
I will note , one would never spend an entire afternoon running these thru your boom-stick , the recoil is "very noticeable". being a solid 6ft 209lbs and thick torso , I can certainly take a punch , however running a couple boxes of this load , is punishment....

I tested #4 Buckshot as it was my agency's issue 12 gauge load. The chopped 18.5" barrel threw a wide pattern at 25 yards

Try the Federal Flite Control. It really works to keep the patterns tight.

That's a shame, as it produced the most crush of any load due to the combined area of the pellets, and had much better (reliable) penetration compared to #4. I suspect it was just too different for the hardcore traditionalists, plus LE has moved a lot more to patrol rifles for very good reasons, so shotguns were either removed or relegated to less than lethal use.

My academy taught slugs as the default, and buck as being a specialty round. I don't care to shoot them, but the tube and speed feed stock have slugs, with a box of 000 in the case.

We used 20" barrels; 4 buck was really effective in the few times used. We stayed with 00 buckshot, however, because it was easier to score 9 rather than 27 pellets on a B27 target during 5-shot qualification courses. Yes, really.

OP you might want to test that load at a more realistic home defense distance. 25 yards is a bit of a stretch.

I am fond of Hornady's TAP (Tactical Application Police), 12 ga, 2.75" shell, 8 00 pellets @ 1100fps. This may not sound like much, but from the 14" Shockwave bbl, it threw a ONE HOLE 'group' @ 25'-30'. Target looked like a rifled slug had hit it.

I went from patrolman to sgt to lt to cpt in my career...I took a position at Headquartes in Santa Fe for my last promotion. It was there I learned my deepest fears about HQ were grossly inadequate. After about a year and a half they shipped me out to field command; they were (and I was) extremely happy about that 'punishment.'

I suspect that there is a truly disproportionate number of politicians' ignorant brothers-in-law wearing executive command rank in too many police agencies.

That's definitely the case in the Chicago PD. When looking at the stuff Second City Cop talks about in his blog, it's pretty frightening. CPD has the concept of "merit" promotions, which typically means politically connected losers who should have been fired from the force instead of promoted.
