Sold 450rds of 7.62x25 for 400 a few days ago. Made 4 times what I paid 6mo ago. Got enough brass to feed my cz52 already so no need for it to sit. Plus if you didn't learn after Sandy Hook to buy cheap and stack deep you've got to pay the market price.

Have one co worker ask every few months if I'm selling any guns and it's always a no. Usually also get the question about selling my reloads and of course that's a no.

At the start of the lockdown I asked my younger gun owning friends (who all have the NJ card and who have all demonstrated to me their commitment to safe and lawful gun ownership) if they needed a box of .38 Special, .357 Magnum. .40 S&W., 5.56 NATO, or 12 gauge 00 Buck or Slugs. Made me feel real good to help out some younger folks who had enough to worry about just taking care of their families.

A friend at work was expressing concern that he missed the boat on a reasonably priced AR15, mags and ammo.
I offerered him a really nice setup at the same price I paid for it years ago when prices were low.
He acted like I was trying to rip him off, and wanted me to lower my price.
So it went back in the safe.

Some folks are jerks..........

Sold a good friend a 915 just before Y2K ...he had a shotgun but didn't own a handgun........ for what I paid for it threw in a extra mag and 50 rds. of HP.....told him what I had in the gun...... he rounded it up to next $100...."You're the one doing me a favor!"

I had 3 other 915s...... couple months later ...... after the "big nothing" happened turned it all into mags and ammo.

Most of the people I know have WAY more money than I do, so they can certainly afford the inflated prices. So if it's just a case of high prices (instead of not being able to find it), they need to be buying their own. That said, if we're shooting together, I'll often provide the ammo if they don't have it. That's like me covering lunch. I enjoy mine, and I enjoy sharing, so no problem.

They don’t have to be very good. Someone around here has been breaking into gun safes during the day when no one is home.
They use a hand held grinder with a cutting disc to open up the safe and pull stuff out of the hole. Takes about 15 minutes.

For about $60 you can buy 3 surveillance cameras and set them up at your house in strategic locations. The motion activity from the cameras sends an alert immediately to your phone and allows you to see what triggered the motion camera, works great. If you see someone in your house call 911 right away. The time from the detected motion by the camera to the alert on your cell phone is literally seconds.

Follow up.
One of the persons who ask me for ammo has been introduced to GunBroker and is buying at will, for a high price.

The other remains clueless, and I'm starting to think it's a good thing that he can't find what he's looking for....

I worry about my children continuing target shooting at a affordable cost.
I want the kids to enjoy it too.

Used to be everytime I went to Walmart w/my wife to buy groceries, I'd go by sporting goods and buy 9mm, .38 Special. Walmart stopped selling ammo ... so we now go to Publics. Thank God I do have a decent amount of ammo. I have been asked by some church members if I could sell them some ammo. I told them I would not sell it but that I would give it to them. I remember what it was like one day when I went to a out of town rifle match and left my ammo on the kitchen table ... 137 miles away. A fellow competitor gave me a bandoleer of excellent quality ammo with which I proceeded to clean everyone's plow. That stuff really really worked extremely well in my M-1 Garand. He wouldn't let me pay him for the ammo. I guess I have the same attitude toward folks now. If I can help them, I'm going to help them. Sincerely. bruce.

Try arlo.com - they have a pretty decent product at a reasonable cost. With the technology today there is no reason for a person not to have them monitoring valuables. We can even talk through them via the phone. We know everything that goes on in and around the house regardless of where we are.

As far as the thread topic, I have given 100 rounds of 223 away to the landowner of a property I hunt. I may give him some more if he needs it. He built an AR and didn't have any ammo, so I helped him out. His not shooting for fun, he lives in the country and wanted something with a bit more range. I told him to get sighted in and I would give him some 62 grain steel tip for defense use. All of the folks I know who shoot have been stocked up for quite awhile.

In the area I referenced, 911 reaction time is probably around 20 minutes on a good day.
The Sheriff’s Dept. thought the thieves used a surveillance camera at the end of the driveway to let them monitor when the residents left home. They live in a rural area at the end of a private driveway about 300 yards long. The house is not visible from the gravel county road that the driveway connects to.

A very good friend who has been toying with the idea of buying a Shield EZ 9 since they were introduced found one yesterday at a farm store that is closing, and at pre-panic prices. He snapped it up. Knowing his only other handguns are .38 Specials I asked what he intended to shoot in it. The ammo shelves were bare except for .270 and .204 bullets for reloading and in this area they are typical even for stores not GOOB.

Long story short I agreed to provide him with one box of ball practice ammo and one of HP. He immediately offered to pay for them, but I told him I'd prefer he replaced them when the dust settles, which I believe is a matter of when, not if. At our ages, the question is not whether normalcy will return, but whether we will live to see it. No net negative effect on the value of my estate if we don't.

In the meantime, I reload for myself and my wife. During the 2008 drought I gave .22 LR to a neighbor who was shooting vermin on my Mom's place when I couldn't get there and sold .22 Mag to my nephew at my cost. I am trading a half box of .32 ACP for a similar amount of .45 ACP next week. I have not owned a .32 since 1981 and the other guy has never owned a .45. I am not Cabela's, but my friends and family (don't have many of either) know they can call me if they need me.

Yep. Neighbor asked and I told him where it was available at not much more than pre panic prices.. I had given him some a couple of years ago and he was expecting me to be his free supplier again.. not happening.

Since my initial post I've parted with more ammo to those in need, some I sold at pre panic prices, some I gave away to new shooters who purchased guns for the first time. All the ammo was 9MM.

All have been informed that this well has run dry, I've pointed out to them how to seek ammo and wished them luck..

More and more people I know are buying guns for the first time, so I don't believe the ammo panic will end soon, but I hope I'm wrong on this one.

On the bright side I have picked up 500 rounds of .455 Webley, though I don't own a Webley revolver yet.

I have a friend who wonders about society collapsing.

I asked him if he had a stash of food in case markets closed down.

He said "no, but I have big stash of ammo so I figure I can barter for food."

I've had co-workers ask, and I politely decline since all I have is reloaded ammo. My son however was lamenting how scarce and expensive ammo was, so I bought him a reloading press, dies, powder drop, etc. and told him I'd be happy to show him how. Last weekend we had our first session loading some cast 9mm bullets. He was pretty happy, and thrilled at the prospect of being able to make his own ammo. I'd gladly show a friend how to reload too, but they would have to pay for the components and load it themselves. I'll never sell or give away my own reloads.

When Dad was alive, I reloaded everything he ever shot. When he went to the range it was always with me. Now my son is the only one I provide ammo to.

Other than my best friend of 60 years, nobody else in the world knows what I have in my safe. In his case, I don't provide him with ammo, but always alert him of coming shortages. He never acts proactively, so in his case I see no need to give or sell him anything. He knew the issue, had pleanty of money, but chose not to act.

I've been asked if I know where someone could buy ammo. I generally don't offer to sell any of mine. I wouldn't hesitate helping out some of my fellow gallery course shooters if they came up short. After the last ammo drought I actually overbought CCI standard velocity only because I didn't want to get sodomized if I ran short and got desperate. I did recently give a close friend a couple of hundred slugs and 00 just because he was very low. I have more than I need and my friend didn't. That's what you do for people you are friends with.

Asked out of the blue by an acquaintance or a random co-worker? Highly unlikely I'd sell or (sheesh!) give them ammo. Sounds a lot like "what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine too!" Pretty forward if you ask me.

A few years ago, a co-worker was getting into shooting. I took him to the club a few times, helped him get his arms around handloading. I shared targets, my equipment etc. It got to the point where he expected my generosity. He'd help himself to my paper targets, rut though my shooting bag for tools, grab my spotting scope to see his targets. All of this without asking. He even wanted me to bring specific items for him to use. This got old fast and I put a stop to it. We don't shoot together anymore. An extreme example, yes, but it shows how some folks think.

Now I'm not a stingy guy. It's a pleasure to help new shooters or old shooters in a bind. Things can get out of control when other people expect gifts. Give 'em an inch and they think they're a ruler!

I never talk about how much ammo I have or don't have. I never ask anyone about their ammo situation. There are definitely people who will damn near insist my ammo is theirs and want me to give or sell them at cheap prices.

I had an experience with a club member who was sort of a friend. One day he up and told me he was going to need some of my .22 stash. I said no and years later he barely speaks to me which is OK.

One of my brothers texted me today asking did I know where he could find .380 defense ammo. He shot all his in target practice. I texted: 'gosh that's too bad....you really screwed up'.

We just ask: What is this ammo you speak of and where can we find some? We don't tell what we have or ask what anyone else has.

I know what it's like to be the "gun guy"; early on I got my brother and his finance some 38 Special and some 9x18 Mak. I got my ex some 9x18 and .32 acp. I got my ex MIL some 38 Special.

I got a buddy some 9x18, and traded him some 9x19 for some .45 and 7.62x39 (he got out of those platforms).

When I say "I got...", that means I gave away a box of 50, give or take.
Enough to make the gun functional if needed. You're not going to the range on my dime right now (for the family members that wasn't an issue anyway- to them, a box was all they wanted/needed).

It's really kinda funny in a way... I DON'T HAVE a 38 Special (or .357), but they just kinda assumed I could find them some. Which- I did.

The trade was pretty much a straight round swap.

This is a brave new world... We who prepped will do what we can to help those in need.... But to those who are ignorant to what is happening...and voted for the Socialists/Marxist... Well... You made your bed; now sleep in it.

Shortages have happened before and will again but this one looks to be the worse so far. Anyone who didn't see this coming wasn't looking or thought the rules didn't apply to them. Guns aren't worth much without ammo, I would rather have a baseball bat or golf club. They were made to swing. I used to feel bad for those people but not so much any more. Same for the reloaders.

I explain I can not give or sell them reloaded ammo , Federal Laws , Local restrictions , Liability and all . But ... Like making beer , you can legally reload for your own use ... I offer teach them how to reload.
I have a portable reloading kit ( featuring a Lee Hand Press) and I will be glad to meet with them and show them how to Do It Themselves ...

So far not one person has taken me up on the offer and they no longer ask for free ammo ... Imagine That !
I really would like to pass all I've learned in the last 50 years but not one person has shown any interest in learning ...

Sounds like you made the right choice.

ALL of my ammo is reloaded so I wouldn't have a problem saying no.

I sold 500 rounds of 38 special to a neighbor for what I had paid ($13/box 5 or 6 years ago) a month or so ago. I gave a box of the same to a lady in my community who just got her License to Carry, but had no ammo to practice with. I sold 2000 pistol primers and a pound of powder to another neighbor for what I paid for it a few years ago. I have more than a lifetime supply of primers and powder, and was happy to help.

None of these people actually ASKED me for this, but I heard them talking about how difficult it has been to find anything in a new community shooting group.

Most novices I talk to tell me they never believed something like this could happen, and were not aware of previous gun and ammo shortages.

Nothing since 2020, when I gifted my only brother some FMJ so we could go to the range together.

I don't pass out metallic ammo but I will give a guy two boxes of 12 Ga.
if he comes up short in a days shoot........... or a flat to trap friends if they run low, for practice use.

Just the low pressure stuff.

It is kinda funny I saw this thread. I had a friend of 40 years call me last Friday looking for 12 gauge shells. He and his brother (also a 40 year friend) are going quail hunting at a preserve in Georgia late in the month. He had won the hunt at a Ducks Unlimited banquet a year ago, and just realized the certificate was only good for a year, which is the end of Febuary. In our younger years, we all went on these hunts together every year. Unfortunately, my health no longer lets me go. The longtime friend that called me has 2 teenage daughters. He had 4 cases of shotgun ammo last summer and told his daughters, who had become interested in shooting skeet, that they could shoot it up, if they wanted.

Basically, he got caught with his pants down. I told him I would check my stash. He offered to pay for anything I could spare. I was happy that I could spare 4 full boxes and 17 individual shells. I gave them to him and just said when things get back to normal, just replace them. If it doesn't get back to normal, no big deal. I can no longer bird hunt anyway. Like I said.......2 longtime friends! Now, I am waiting for the other brother to call me!

you have all that. There are people that are good with computers that could figure out where you live in less than 20 minutes.
And that’s just the teenagers.
It wouldn’t be very smart to try to get his ammo. He’s obviously well equipped to deal with the situation.

Would swap components, don’t have any factory ammo except .22s and buckshot.

I have a couple good friends, we take care of each other. I have had enough of off the wall people wanting to barrow dies, molds, components and wanting ammo. I think my grand daughter described it best when she was a toddler, her favorite food was Pizonya.

Y'know Gary, I've often wondered about picking up a simple Lee hand loader. I know it's not efficient, but it seems like you'd be able to crank out a box's worth, while sitting in front of the TV.

Cracking a safe is not how they do it any more. There are much easier and quicker ways. Takes about 10 to 15 minutes with very few tools. Like 3 or 4. Very common ones.
Thieves got into 3 gun safes in an area a few miles from here over a one week period using the method I am referring to.
Do not want to publicize the how-to’s it on a public forum.

That a teenager can hack into any computer system given 20 minutes is a common theme on TV. But the truth is that it is a lot harder than that. If they could they would be hacking into banks, not gun forums. To steal this ammo they would have to find an unpatched vulnerability on the forum software, retrieve the posters email, correlate that email to his real address, drive cross country to his house, break into his house without getting shot or arrested, take a Saws All to his safe and then steal that ammo. That's a lot of effort, risk and felonies for not that much money. And the internet being what it is there is also the risk of going through all that trouble just to learn that their intended target was just blowing smoke and doesn't actually have any ammo.

The much bigger threat is one of your children or friends mentioning you have a lot of guns and ammo that information spreading like a game of telephone. If you are the gun guy at work word spreads. And boys like to brag about all the guns their father has and lets him shoot. Word gets around.

I would never mention guns I own on something like Facebook where my real name is shown. But I worry a lot less when posting on forums.
Think:” Domestic Terrorist Watch List.”
Might be pretty easy to make that one in a few months without even doing anything.

You could have the barrel lined for not too much money and shoot it.

The only problem with a conventional Classic Lee Loader is the noise ... they are referred to as Whack-A-Mole loaders because all functions require a mallet to drive the cases in and out .
My advice is to spring for the little Lee Hand Press ... much less noise ... the rest of the house hold doesn't get disturbed and you can reload sitting in your easy chair or bed or kitchen table or desk ... watching TV .
Another reason is after buying the Hand Press all you need is a set of dies to load another caliber ... Reloading is like eating potato chips ... one leads to another and another ...!
The hand press is one of Lee's better idea's and it's not expensive .

I gave a box of home defense 9MM to favorite mechanic.

The quality service I have gotten and will continue getting if worth FAR MORE that the value/price of the ammo.

When I find some of my misplaced 22LR I will give him some.

Misplaced - yes misplaced - SWMBO has advised me that if I were any more disorganized I would be declared a committee. She may be correct.

I'm a bit surprised by the number of posters whose ammo stash is apparently public knowledge.

I recently gave a friend 150 12 gauge shotgun shells, 500 .22 LR, 50 9mm, and 50 .380. He didn't ask, just noted that the only 12 gauge he could find was bird shot. He has a mid level state job, three kids, mortgage, and car payments. I know he had been stockpiling ammo and magazines pre pandemic to the extent he was able to budet for the purpose.

I was happy to help him out.
