Have seen the same price in a number of places. Double normal old price same as most other ammo you can actually buy.

Only costs you two dollars for a freezer full of venison. What a bargain A couple of boxes will feed your family for a lifetime, right? Now you understand why so many folks who like to fire more than one round a year take up handloading.

Over the past couple of years I have not seen much center-fire rifle ammo for less than $2 per round.

Actually, as I think about this I realize that I just haven't seen much ammo at all.

With factories focusing on more popular calibers like 9x19mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, 38 Special (excluding target loads), 357 Magnum, and 5.56mm NATO, I doubt they have the resources to manufacture "obsolete" ammo such as the 300 Savage. Quantities are limited, so expect to pay a much higher price when you find it.

By the way, the 300 Savage is an excellent deer cartridge. I had a friend who had a Savage Model 99 chambered in 300 Savage. For a lever action, it was very accurate and the caliber has plenty of power for white tail deer.

SW had Remington 300 Savage for $53 last month. Found some at a gun show for $2 a couple weeks ago. Glad I reload. However being in the ammo manufacturing industry, we were are all concentrating production for the most purchased cartridges, e.g., 9mm, 5.56, etc. From a demand perspective we had to put many of the slower sellers like the 300 Savage, 35 Rem, 45-70 on the back burner. With much of our ammo manufacturing ability overseas, shipping was a huge factor in delayed deliveries during the Kung Flu pandemic.

How much does a box normally cost? I'm guessing that's not too much more than Midway was charging 2 years ago.

Ammo companies can sell all the Para Military and SD ammo they can squeeze out. The Computer that was billed as giving us more choices is exactly the opposite. If the sales of a cartridge falls below a companies business plan , production is dropped. In present political situation no company will want to expand when new laws and regulations may put them out of business.
There is no more company loyalty to customers. Bean counters run everything. Their only loyalty is to the bottom line.

Although it can be formed from .308 WIN brass, I see that 300 Savage brass is about a $ per (unprimed, of course), if and when it is available...

20 rounds of loaded ammo for an extra $1.25 each is not totally unreasonable if you are likely to reload. That is, if you happen to have the 300 Savage die set?

Cheers!

Well before the King Flu hit the price of 300 Savage was right up there....30-35 a box at most LGS. The only reason it would be cheaper at certain sellers is because they had it in stock and it wasn't selling so the price was reduced. I bought some at a gun show for 10 bucks for the Rem 81....not the normal price. I also at the same show bought some 32 S&W Long WC and RN for 10 bucks a box...Normal price?? Heck no. Last year before the KF hit you could buy 243 270 30-06 and others for under 20 bucks but it was the most common ammo made...going forward from this point I doubt you will see those prices again. If you happen to have a firearm for an older unusual or outdated cartridge...it may be time to be looking for ammo.. I doubt it will get any cheaper. Heck I just had a fellow offer me 50 rounds of NEW 35 Rem brass for 10 bucks. I was like a duck on a June bug. Also...I was looking at the prices of high end shotgun slugs..2 to 4 dollars each? That is why I went to shooting deer back in Maryland before I left with a Savage Smokeless powder muzzleloader. A deer cost in ammo with it was about 50 cents and practice rounds were less....and I bagged a few with the practice rounds too. Now I need to find some CHEAP 32-20

How much do you think they should charge for ammo that goes in guns that they stopped making 50 years ago?

I'm not sure that "they" all "stopped making guns" in 300 Savage "50 years ago"...?

(Remington Model 7000 CDL SF #84038, Savage Model 110 50th Anniversary : 2008)

Cheers!

P.S. IMHO "they" should continue making ammunition available, if only in limited quanties or in special production runs, as long as there are willing buyers... As previously indicated 308 brass can be reformed, but NOT ALL ENTHUSIASTS ARE RELOADERS.

+1;

I only had to finish off four deer with my revolver since I started hunting deer back in 1968 and one was was not mine.

Lots of "High Sage" in Nevada, that might make a bullet "Move" a little bit.

Even before all this ammo madness it was usually around $40 per box of twenty. 30-30 OTOH could be had for under $20. Now they are running neck and neck price wise If you can find them.
One thing I have noticed at the shows lately is that the rarer, hard to get calibers are showing up at very reasonable prices. At the York show on Sunday I saw two boxes of 25-35 Winchester tagged at around $30. Over this past year I've also bought 32-40 Winchester for $20 a box and have seen some older 32-20 Win for under $30. I think people are cleaning their gun rooms out and selling unneeded ammo.

Just for the heck of it I visited the "new" Remington ammo website to see if they're still making some of my favorites...YIKES! If the MSRP prices are indicative of what we'll be seeing in the "real world," (i.e. Walmart, etc.) folks are in for some real PERMANENT sticker shock! Some calibers are now in the vicinity of $3 per shot.

“They” are making the ammo. The complaint is that it is expensive. The reason for that is that “they” have to stop producing ammo that feeds millions of guns and retool to make a run of ammo for a couple of thousand guns. Someone has to pay for the diversion of resources from producing ammo that is heavily in demand to the production of ammo that is not in great demand. That someone is the purchaser. The cost of materials is the same for all the ammo that is produced at any one time so what that 2$ a round is basically paying for is increased labor and loss of production of something else. It’s just the cost of using a gun that is not in general production.

Of course the only answer is to reload your own. The older and more obsolete the cartridge is the harder it is to acquire even when things were normal. I have a couple of old rifles that I have feed, including this Savage 99EG 300 Savage.

Two boxes are a lifetime of shooting for hunters using the 300 Savage. Good price, no but breakfast at Perkins for two adults is $30.

I am sure there are a few of us that own a "Oldie but goodie" that we like to shoot or even hunt with if it will do the job.

There are tons of .30 caliber's out there plus weapons down to the smaller 6mm and .243, that I am having trouble finding on the shelf's.

I don't even wan't to look up the price of my 30-40 Krag ammo, at this time or a .30 Remington.

However I will start looking for ammo when Christmas comes around, again.

Yesterday I found a box of NOS Speer 150 gr for $1.50 per rd. They also had a box of NOS Winchester .32 WS 170 gr Silver Tips for the same price. Snagged both.

I have two rifles in .300 Savage. One great thing about that caliber (at least for reloaders) is that .300 S cases can be very easily formed from .308/7.62 NATO brass. One pass through a .300 Savage FL die followed by a case neck cut (I use a tubing cutter) and a TTL. This is because there is little difference between the .300 S and the .308 cases, except for the case neck length and the shoulder angle. Very little difference in ballistics also. And you need never worry about .300 S ammo availability again if you are a reloader. Yesterday, I made up 35 more .300 S cases (like I really need any more) from range pickup .308 cases. You can nearly always easily find .308 cases at many ranges. Some may know that after WWII, the U. S. Army developed the 7.62 NATO case using the .300 Savage as the basis. But they later decided a longer case neck would be better for use with automatic weapons.

"I don't even wan't to look up the price of my 30-40 Krag ammo, at this time or a .30 Remington." If you happen to have a lathe or access to one (which I do), it's fairly simple to make .30 Rem cases from .30-30 cases. All that's needed is to turn down the rim to base diameter and then cut an extractor groove, about a two minute job. They can even be loaded using .30-30 dies. I have made several hundred of them. Regarding the .30-40, I haven't done it as I have nothing chambered in .30-40, but I think cases can be made from .303 British, except the case neck will be a little shorter.
