I remember that in the early 2000’s. Remington game loads went on sale for $2.99/box- all gauges, all shot. I bought so many cases I was still flipping it last fall in 2021.

I suspect that ammo will again become more available after a certain group of people realize that gun owners are not stupid enough to shoot all our ammo up until it’s all gone. Once they realize that, they will understand that outlasting us will take more time than they have.

I can and do reload 9MM but I also buy ammo if the price is right. Last I bought was about 8.00 per 50. I will buy at 10.00 but not much more. If you keep buying at 20.00 per 50 the price won't go down.

I still have a couple of thousand rounds that I paid an average cost of 16 cents per round.

I also have enough components for another thousand rounds, even though 9mm isn't my favorite caliber to load.

Guessing that I can hold out for a couple of years.

My DnL spent $800 plus on 9mm ammo, so she had ammo to go practice with.
At the time I was low on primers and had to let her spend her money for ammo.

I now feel better with the primers that I have but will only hand out 38 special and not
the high volume 9mm ammo, that goes through primers in a hurry, if you shoot a lot.

Buying a two boxs a month, is not going to kill you, if you are working.

It’s ~$14/50 if you shop a bit.

I’ve bought at that price so I can continue to shoot without my inventory dropping too low.

With inflation and high demand, I don’t think it’s going much lower.

Shooters aren’t going to stop buying so prices drop, they might shoot less if their economic situation demands, but shooters are going to buy ammo to shoot (or components, which also keeps loaded ammo prices high.)

Folks who will “wait” for $10/box for 9mm will be the first complaining during the next scare/shortage. While certainly not as inexpensive as it was, it’s still reasonable enough to buy in bulk IMO.

My email in-box is full of ammo sellers with "specials" including free shipping etc. on ammo that is in my opinion overpriced. I may be a fool, but I still believe prices will moderate. I could tolerate 200 dollars per thousand 9mm, but I am willing to roll the dice and wait. I use lumber as an example. Prices dropped 30% recently. Volatility in today's economic environment is to be expected.

The answers to these questions will reveal themselves in the future.

Over the past week, I've loaded almost 2k but I don't cast my own, so they cost a bit more. I like using a semi-wadcutters, either 115 or 124 grain. I got a thing about nice round holes in paper!

Yup, every ammo shortage so far has been followed by a glut that causes the bottom to fall out of the pricing. And every time, the folks with an Eeyore attitude lament "things will never be the same" and "get used to it this is the new normal".

The shortage has always been followed by a glut and it will happen again this time. There haven't been that many fundamental changes to the market forces that cause the cycle.

When all the dust settles and things normalize, will the prices end up being a little higher due to inflation? DUH! Of course they will - but only a LITTLE more - not double or triple like they are now (during the actual shortage). For the price to stay at 200% or 300% higher would require
1) the current shortage to continue indefinitely - we know that won't happen since it is already starting to ease up, or
2) the current level of inflation (7%) to continue unabated for the next 10+ years - or even get considerably worse.

Neither of those things are going to happen. The short term increase in demand and decrease in production will end. We're already starting to see prices fall. The supply & demand equation will balance out and we'll see cheap ammo again when they do.

I've bought very little during this. I have a comfortable supply of most ammo. Ironically, my biggest want is steel-cased 7.62x39. I have several cases, and tended to not buy it much even as prices jumped; that jumped the least so I figured it would be safe. I have some SKS's, and decided to build an AR to shoot it since it was cheap.
That Russian ammo ban caught me there. I don't think it's going to come back down to the prices it was before. Would like to have added a couple more cases to future-proof.

I will add, so did I and I saw it at a store I would never expect to see low prices, at the Field & Stream store. As a matter of fact the Blazer brass 9mm ammo was less expensive than the Blazer Aluminum ammo by $2.

unless you have an infinite supply of components, you and other reloaders are in the same boat (perhaps a different seat) as those of us who purchase manufactured ammo.

And when I say infinite supply, I mean that. Please don't say "I have more than enough to last a lifetime", because there are those of us who could claim the same with our stockpiled reserves of ammo. The point remains- given enough shooting (and the more the merrier, I think we all agree), reloaders will run out of components too.

The question remains, do we have enough x to ride this shortage out, and what will the price be going forward if we need to buy more? I have thousands of rds of various calibers, enough to wait out the demand. To do so, I've cut back on my shooting drastically, taking a lot of the fun out of things. I'm planning on not needing to buy ammo for at least a decade or more, at the rate I'm going now. If I hit my old pace, I'd probably make 5-6 yrs pretty easily. So this is more of an theoretical discussion on my part. I'd still like to see things settle down, so that we ALL can enjoy our hobby to the fullest.

I have fired many thousands of those over the years without any problems. I have fired them in 39's, Sigs, RIA, and BHP's.

I will be very surprised if we see 9mm at $10.00/50 again. In any event I don't plan on waiting for it . Although I have several thousand rounds on hand that I purchased at pre pandemic prices I do go through a fair bit of it. I am buying here & there when I find it below $15.00/50 just to keep stocked up. Who knows what might happen in the near future to cause another shortage. Be prepared has always been the best advice in all things.

I always though the same thing but I did go ahead and try several boxes of CCI that I was able to purchase at a somewhat reasonable price. It shot and functioned fine in my Glock 34 that I use for steel plate matches. If priced right I would have no problem buying & using more. Unless you reload why pay extra for brass that you won't use anyway.

I will buy more ammo, probably when Hell freezes over. I don’t shoot much and have a big supply. If it runs low, I have tens of thousands of primers and a lot of powder. If I run low on bullets, that might be a problem. All my casting equipment and several hundred pounds of wheel weights were stored at my late father in law’s home. I didn’t get it moved out before my sister in law sold it.

Went in Academy today, 9 mm for about $16/50. Had CCI 22 standard velocity for $5.99, Walmart about 4 blocks away has it for $4.83, go figure, BTW both had Plenty of 22 s.

None to be found around me. I've got a meager supply of Winchester White Box bought at $20/50. I scored some primers, had a customer GIVE me 500 and have about 900 cases and 140 lbs. of lead to cast.

I'm not in great shape, but my nose is above water here.

Look to purchase on line. I can't remember the last time I purchased from a store.

I will wait until my stockpile runs low. Then I will pay the going rate. Stopped by Sportsman's Warehouse this morning. Lots of .380, 9mm, .40, .45 but no .38 Special. $25-$30 for 50 rounds of 9mm.

IMO I agree that we will never see 10$ a box 9mm again, Once a Co. see's that they can charge more and get it they will continue to charge more, Yes price's will drop but not as low as before !
Look at ,22 ammo a average 50$ for a box on 500 and used to be mid 20$s. Now Wal Mart has Winchester .22LR for about 22$ a box for 325

IMO, buy all the factory new, brass cased 9mm you can find at $17ish delivered. Prices may come down to $15 delivered, but that won't be this year.

Gunshow last week ammo guy was selling PPU 9mm for $325/1000, tax incl. Had tons of it. Rumor was he would sell to gunshops for $300 if they bought enough.

Man, you guys are talking numbers that I can't imagine. I don't shoot much anymore, but when I did, the thought of 2k,3k,5k of anything was off the chart. My lowly seed crop of a few hundred reloads for each gun will last longer than I will, and if I were to see ammo priced at $10 per box, I'd pass. I could use a brick of sr and sp primers and a couple lbs of powder, but just for seed storage. At 76 years old and shooting for over 60 years, I'd safely bet that I haven't sent more than 2k downrange.

2000 rounds in 60 years is only 33 rounds a year. Can’t imagine bothering to reload for 33 rounds a year.

Local rip off shop has primers for the low low price of $199 a brick. I passed.

33 per year sounds about right, maybe a little excessive. My shooting is usually on trapped hogs and chicken stealing critters. Seldom just plinking. Reloading is never a bother, quantity never comes into play. It's relaxing, the longer it takes the better, and the end result is better than factory.

Maybe that's why .22 has been trending lately. I went from 38 Special M&P to K-22 and haven't regretted it yet. Still have lots of 9mm but I do like my revolvers.

I wouldn’t sell the 9mm I have for $10 a box, so I am not terribly surprised no one else (retailer or otherwise) will sell it at that price point either. I’m in California and paying $5.19 or more for premium gas and everything else is off the charts as well….difficult times…but if I needed ammo I would pony up for it rather than not have any.

$10 a box 9mm isn’t coming back anytime soon. If you really need ammo right now look for the best deals you can find and buy what you need. You only worry about the money you’re about to spend. Once you have what you really want you forget about the money that is already gone.

It doesn't work that way for everyone. Knowing I spent too much or got ripped off is something that keeps me up at night. If it was something I really need spending what it takes to buy it doesn't bother me. But having a bunch of ammo I paid too much for would suck the fun out of shooting every time I saw it.

BTW, I don't think people buying ammo now are getting ripped off. But they are paying too much if they are buying more than they are shooting.

I'm smiling, as I remember before COVID when people were ridiculing reloaders who were loading 9x19 and only saving 3 or 4 bucks a box of 50. I'm not wealthy, by any stretch of the imagination, but I've been able to shoot 150 rounds on an average of once a week for the past couple of years without having to worry. Of course, I shoot .38 SPL and .45 ACP, as well as, 9mm.

I have been shooting my .22's a lot during the ammo shortage because I have plenty of it and also because I do enjoy shooting my rimfire rifles and handguns.
In particular my K22 ...Model 17-3 . I have a matching Model 14-1 but my supply of .38 is very low and prices on that ammo are quite high. Certainly more than I am willing to pay ay present.

Was cleaning/sorting my home office today. Found a receipt for 3,000 various Federal primers (which I still have 2,850 not loaded) that I bought last year for $30/1,000. Times have changed. Maybe permanently. Factory ammo-wise, I have 10,000+ 22's, 2,000+ 9mm's, 2,000+ 45's, 2,000+ 223's. I reload all my 38's, 357's, 44's, and don't have enough primers to load all the lead, powder, and cases I own. War in Europe - prices are never going down again.

Well now that the super bowl is over I guess I will have to wade through "March madness" and golf for a while befor I go out and check out the shops for ammo again.

I sure hope that when the snow melts around this area that I might find ammo on the shelves of the big places in town and they are low enough for my hand to finally reach out and grab a box or five.
