What are the current prices on factory 44 spl /44 magnum ammo ? Ballpark

They are whatever they are at the particular source you choose to purchase them from! As with everything else prices have a fairly wide range depending on where you are in the country. Simply "Google" what you wish to purchase and you will receive numerous sources as a response.

Lowest 44 Special cowboy ammo around me is $46/box. Same ammo 30 miles away is $59/box. I lucked into three "old" boxes to include a box of Black Hills Thunder Ranch Keith loads for $100. It is not cheap.

Check out Gunprime.com. Their ammo deals are pretty good relatively speaking. The 44 Special is ballpark $1.00-$2.00 each and the magnum a bit more.

Is it fair to ask .70 cents per round for a mixed lot of 44spl/44mag ammo then ? Not per box , but for the whole lot.plus Shipping.

I picked up two boxes of Fiocchi 44 magnum at my LGS yesterday and it came to $119 plus tax. Never paid that much for ammo before. GULP! Won’t be plinking with that.

I have "set up" at several gun shows here in Ohio recently and "attempted" to sell 44 special factory ammo...I believe my prices are super LOW (FTF ONLY)...$40 a box of 50 rounds both in Magtech 44 special 240gr FMC and Fiocchi 210gr cowboy loads...people stop, say they need some, pick it up, put it back down and just walk away...hard to figure out what they are thinking when this same ammo is retailing for $49 to $54 a box elsewhere...I have decided if I can't get $40 a box I will take it out and shoot it all up...thanks for letting me vent...Roger

Agree. I offered a LOT of factory 44 special and 44 magnum mixed brands ammo at 70 cents per round and people say it's way too much. (?)
It's fine because I don't need to sell it. Just strange that 70 cents per round is somehow too much.

How much is a lot? Were you trying to sell it all at once?

It seems like most people either want to buy a box or two of 44 or reload. Not much of a market for people that want to buy 1000 rounds all at once.

A couple of years ago when the big clampdown was just starting on ammo, I picked up a couple of short cases of .44 special from SGAmmo. 500 rounds of CBC brass Magtech 230gr FMJFP, 100 rounds of Hornady 180gr XTP (now discontinued), and 100 rounds of Hornady 165gr FTX. Less than $250 for the 500, less than $100 for each of the Hornadys. Not in stock now, and may never be again. I have two Ruger 44 Vaqueros, and a GP100 44spl that shoot them all well. I haven't tried any of them in my 1923 S&W 44HE. I have a box of HSM cowboy action loads waiting for it. Handloads come later.

Picked up a few boxes of 44 special at a Pawn Shop a few weeks ago for $22. They had got them from a guy pawning a pistol so I was only able to get 3 boxes.

I have a 5" 629 that really likes the PMC 240gr TCSP

I understand the time thing... I reload because I enjoy it. I make a way bigger deal out of cleaning cases, priming, powder measuring, bullet seating and load development than needs be but it satisfies that "machinist" need most of us have. Just an extension of the hobby to me...

9m/m is SO much cheaper than other centerfire pistol and rifle ammo and I just paid $14.99/50 Blazer brass from Acadamy. I now have 4 guns chambered in it and I never really liked the round until recently. I phased out my .44 SP, .41 Mag, .44 Mag, .40S&W, .32acp, and a few others and now my only other pistol calibers are .380. .38Sp, .357Mag, .45acp, and my new 10 mm. My 10mm is the most expensive, especially because I only shoot the hot loaded ammo but I love it. My S&W $100 rebate card was used up just buying two boxes of ammo. Thinking about getting the Smith 9mm folding carbine just because ammo is so cheap.

I have seen roughly $1 per round for .44 special and slightly more for .44 magnum. That is why I roll my own.

If you reload, good for you. However, this post isn't about reloading.

Ammoseek shows several 44 special offerings less than 80 cents a round but the shipping can kill you. Some vendors offer free or low shipping if you buy over $200 worth. 44 mag is as low as 70.6 cents per round. I wouldn't recommend buying from anyone on ammoseek unless their reviews show more than 3 stars.

Plan on finding a quiet place where no one can see you suck your thumb and whimper.

Yes, it is expensive. A number of years ago I picked up a bunch of 44 mags and specials for $25 a bag of 50. I am down to my last 500 so I started to think it was time to get some powder, primers and lead. Well, we know how that looks now. Best advice is to buy as much as you can afford when prices are low. Problem now is I have hundreds of rounds of ammo for guns I no longer own��

Eeee Gads---I have 6 hungry revolvers and 3 rifles in 44 magnum to feed. Glad I learned to load my own back in the 80's. I learned after buying the first couple of boxes of factory ammo that the only way I could afford too shoot 44, was to reload. Paying a buck a round would just take the fun right out of a 200 round 44 shooting day. I was also wise enough to stock up on primers and powder back in the day (Clinton era). Even if I account for the brass at .20 I am loading coated lead 240gr SWC's for .35 per round. If I take the brass out of the equation, my cost per round drops to around .15 per round. This puts the smile right back into shooting 44 mag.
Fairly certain I have more than paid for my equipment many years ago.

Seems anything center fire with a rim is expensive. 38 isn’t too ridiculous, but the compact sd revolver is popular so that helps it. 44 has been an expensive proposition for a long time.

I reload, but I use 22lr more than anything, not for money saving really, but plopping in front of the press just isn’t as interesting at the moment. Well, I’ve had a busy several months, that hasn’t helped either.

Expensive and rare.
Exceptions exist but don't count on them.
I got a great deal on a Savage 99F in 300Sav just before the
covid lockdown. I got 2 boxes of 150gr remingtons for a control
group.
Now, no cartridges and zero empty cases. I did make 325 empties
out of 308s.

How about you invite him over and show him how to load what he needs. If he pulls the handle he might be more at ease plus you are not responsible for anything that might go wrong. (even though the chance is slight)

Slightly off topic but I remember that when I had a .500 I was able to buy a Lee die set and the components (I already had the powder) for around the cost of 1-2 boxes of loaded ammo.
When I sold the gun the buyer wanted the reloading stuff as well.

What I see is an average of $40-$50/box, depending on load, round count, brand, etc.

Buy online and ship is my recommendation.

I guess I gloat a little. My loading machines do about 500 rounds per hour so the time thing is minimal. After 45 years of handloading my equipment is long paid for and amortized. Anything other than 9mm is very worth handloading . I often shoot a couple hundred rounds at a range session of say 38 special, 357, 45 acp or 41s or 44 special/ magnum so the cost saving over you pure factory round shooters is astronomical. I t all depends on how much you shoot

All my 44 mags are sighted in with Winchester White Box 240 JSP. Around here it’s $49-59 for box of 50. American Eagle seems to be about the same, sometimes a bit more.

Sad to say, but unless you are shooting the ubiquitous 9mm Luger, it's all very expensive.

I recently bought 500 rounds of 44 mag on ammo seek because it was cheaper than 44 special. What's up with that?

Isn't it funny--- a couple of years ago, people were griping about having to spend $1 for 556/223... now the price is the same for pistol rounds... and reloading isn't cheap either -- the cost for primers is horrific

comparatively, 44 magnum has never been cheap. Meanwhile, 44 special has typically been priced slightly higher as it's always lacked the production volume advantage of 44 magnum.
That, having always been the case, the 44 has been responsible for more people getting into reloading than any other cartridge.

So ... what press are you thinking of getting?

Honestly, while the reloading side is getting savaged, it still pays it's dividends.
if we are taking about loading 9MM target ammo, just buy it.
9MM with the latest whiz bang hollowpoint, it remains worth it where some factory loads are over $2 per round.
It's certainly created a condition where one must pick their battles.
