Default A question on 22s

I saw some Aguila 22 Super Xtra 38 gr HV anno on sale at 5 cents per round/25.00 for 500 brick. I have shot a bit of the Aguila lead rounds and they shot ok in my 22 Bolt guns . 5 cents is an almost killer price right now. What do you all say? Worth spending 250 dollars on? Or should I just spring for 2-4 bricks...or none?

I don't recall ever regretting spending money for a good price on decent bulk ammo. Generally it sits around long enough I'm pretty happy about what I paid even if I didn't buy at the bottom of the market.

I've never bought any of this Aguila...that's why I was asking the best price I have seen on bulk ammo(Armscor) was 4 cents a round at the farm store but had to pay tax of 4% so bought a 1000 rounds...so a couple bucks tax. I think I am going to get 4 bricks...Worst is get frustrated a bit. But it'll be the grandkids being frustrated LOL

I have shot 3 cases of their 40 gr. solid. I shot them in several rifles and pistols and they worked ok. They have an odd smell when fired that some people don't like but it doesn't bother me. I think they are Eley primed. Larry

Aguila is some of the best .22 ammo on the market in my opinion. Used to be Eley primed but now Aguila primed which is supposed to be the same compound and does smell a bit. So the price is lower than the older stuff that got costly. Lots of priming compound in the case rims means reliability and more consistent velocity according to my chronograph. I say buy as much as you want.

Inexpensive, plentiful and the brand works for you...I'd say stock up. 2024 may bring renewed ammo shortages.

Like most cheap bulk ammo, I've found Aguila accuracy to vary considerably from batch-to-batch and haven't bought any in a good while. I've been buying CCI SV by the case for a long time. I like it much better; it functions well and is accurate in a large variety of guns, rifles and handguns. Spend a little more and get good ammo.

I have been shooting some SV CCI and have a few FTF with them too. I don't think any ammo is safe in the last couple of years. Haven't shot any Mini Mags...at least newer ones. This is just going to be blow away ammo anyway I guess . Some of the worst I have had in the last few years was some Winchester...I got in touch with CS and they sent me purchase price back. The Federal Automatch works well. I went ahead and ordered the Aguila...but only 4 bricks. Can't get hurt too much that way. An off the wall thought...wayyy back as a kid we bought the cheap stuff most of the time...Western Auto Monky Wards Sears etc...and I don't remember hardly any duds back then. Even gallery loads worked great 20cents a box if we could get 'em. Killed rats at the dump and in the granary

I've had one failure to fire with CCI SV in the last twenty years after going through many thousands of rounds. However, that was with older ammo I bought long before the shortages of a few years ago.

I do have some I bought since the shortages but have not fired fired any of it. I hope the newer stuff works as well as the older ammo. Some say it doesn't but that comes from Internet sources, so I'll have to try it myself to get at the truth.

2 years ago I bought 4 boxes of Federal Black Friday ammo...1600 rds HPs . I have shot it all but 8 or 9 boxes. I expected some FTFs with it. Had no issues with it at all. Surprised me...In fact all the Federal has gome bang. A few years back I had trouble with Rem TBolts but none in the last year. Well I'll see about what I've bought. The only ones I've bought and not fired any was Armscor... Yep...cheap under 4 cents each

For many. many years I shot Win. X22LR and was very pleased. Maybe 5 years ago I bought several cases and they were the nearest nothing .22s I have ever shot. Some boxes only had 49, some bullets were deformed and some cases were bent. That's when I tried the Aguila and was pleased with them but have since switched to CCI and Federal 711B. Larry

I have shot a lot of the older Aguila and it is good ammo and better than a lot of domestic bulk grade stuff. I don’t think you would go wrong with Aguila at a good price

I have had great results with the stuff. My only complaint is the smell of the priming compound on indoor ranges. Petty complaint, I know, and it wouldn't be enough to make me pass on a good deal.

I have used Aguila .22 ammo in the past and never really cared for it . On the other hand I know one person who buys it by the case and loves it !
The price is pretty good so...give it a try.

My primary dislike for the Aguila goes back about fifteen years. I bought several bricks and had about 5% or more rounds that didn't fire. I suppose I should have contacted the company but instead chose to shoot up what would actually fire. Such an experience may turn one against a product.

About six or eight years ago, I tested about twenty-five .22 LR ammos for fifty yard accuracy using two good quality, non-target rifles, both equipped with scopes, though not high-magnification scopes.

In all fairness, I must admit that Aguila SV averaged .83" and Aguila HV averaged .77". I don't remember for sure, but think all of it fired this time. My favorite .22 ammo, CCI SV averaged .67". Really not much difference, but I suspect another batch of Aguila may not shoot as well, while the CCI will likely be similar to the results mentioned here. Spending a bit more for consistency is worth it to some.

I have shot and still have boxes of Aquila .22's.........Only think I don't like is the smell after shooting.....Smells like they use dried Buffalo Chips in their powder mix.

That's a good price. Aguila is bulk ammo so I would not expect NRL22, ARA match winning results from it. good for plinking or speed shooting like Steel Challenge.
BTW in regard to High Velocity (HV) that's code for all over the place.

I used to really like Aquila 22 ammo (Super Extra) a lot and actually preferred it to the new CCI stuff I've been getting lately (lots of FTF). However I recently purchased three 250 round bulk pack boxes of Super Extra and the stuff is awful. The rounds are unevenly coated with wax so badly they gum up my magazines and some won't even chamber. I still have bricks of the 50 rounds boxes and that is really nice ammo.

The bulk pack stuff must be blems.

I have no experience with Aguila products so I have no idea how accurately they will shoot, especially in your guns. As far as reliability goes, I do have a few friends who use Aguila and they have nothing bad to say about the ammo.

As a long time competitor in many phases of shooting, I want my ammo to be the most accurate I can buy as long as it is consistent, reliable and is readily available.

I use two hand guns for competition. One is my S&W M41 and the other is my M18. I fond that in my M41 the absolute best round for me is CCI 40 grain standard velocity. For my M18 I find the CCI Mini Mags (high vel.) is what works best. To me, I don't concern myself about the 2 cents a round difference as I am more interested in the performance. If you are the type of shooter that only shoots steel plates, combat silhouette targets, etc. it probably won't make much of a difference since almost any 22 ammo will shoot good enough for that. My personal interest is in precision and consistency.

In my bolt action scoped target rifles I also use CCI Mini Mags, but if just at the range and plinking with a pump or lever action I will use Federal #510 (blue box), American Eagle 40 grain High Velocity or what ever I have in stock. Out of my CZ 453 American (I use this for rifle competition), nothing shoots as well as the CCI Mini Mag with the Federal Blue Box not far behind.

The cheapest and most accurate ammo I bought in at least 25 years is Federal 711B but cost is higher today . I taken a heck of a lot of squirrel with it and a few hogs and deer back in sw florida with ear shots with my old rem 511P . In my savage mkii bv its a solid moa ammo so even reducing our ground hog problem over just 100 yards is a one shot and done deal but sk rifle match is more accurate . Not sure when I shot a high velocity 22lr last time but I was most likely still a kid , I'm 68 now .

So continue to buy cheap 22lr till you find one reliably enough and accurate enough to fill your needs .

Well I ordered 4 bricks of the ammo I originally posted about. It is at Cabela's ready to be picked up. I found a box of the same ammo I've had for a while couple days ago... shot it out of My Remington M-5. It shot fine...no bad smells or anything just plinking at stuff back near the cliff near the dry ground. Plunked a wild pigeon at about 50 yds. DRT...almost took it's head off. Funny thing...within minutes a eagle was flying away with it. I went back on the Cabela's site today...was gonna order 6 more bricks...says out of stock. Winchester 41 primers are in I think. I ordered another 1000 today for a friend when I ordered some brass. 200 Starline 32 H&R mag 100 44mags and a 100 5 Colt brass too...Midway is out of 32-20 no backorders

I went out to the Outdoor range today/. above 50, barely... but no snakes. I used the Reminton Jumior Targetmaster 521 with peep sights Had to shoot left handed as I lost a lot of the sight in the right eye in an auto accident many years ago. over an old feather pillow at a hundred feet. best group was at just over an inch. Good for me. The worst was about an inch and a half. this was with the Aguila 38 gr 22s. I shot a 12 shot group with the 1948 K-22 I bought recently same range right hand left eye. The group was slightly over an inch and 3/4. I also shot a 12 round with the somewhat challenged 5 inch 27-2. single action got a group about 2 inches.. 2 inches high and almost that much left. Going to have to check the trigger...double action pull was inconsistent with single action pull great but cocking effort was inconsistent. The load was 150 gr LSWC with old S&W/Alcan SPPs and a load of old Winchester 230 powder. I also shot the little M-60 38 same load..distance etc. Got 4 of 5 on the target. If I have to get in a fight with it...I'm gonna run...er walk away fast first..if possible...with a bit of a breeze it was still chilly out there. Better than 30 below The Aguila Bulk pack seems to have worked out fine so far. Glad I bought 9 bricks.
