Default residue on case

I went to the range today and shot some "new to me" ammo. It was Defender 220 grain 44 special shot from my M69 4.25". When I ejected the cases they had residue of some kind, all long one side of each case. I had never seen this before. Any ideas what this is and what caused it?

Low pressure loads not sealing the chamber throats or an undersized bullet for that particular chamber throat, preventing a seal. Either way, looks like gas blowby deposited on the case. Just a guess.

These are fairly accurate rounds and suppose to be 850 fps from a 4 inch barrel but they shoot more like some weaker rounds I've shot in the past. I don't have a Chronograph but I doubt they are over 800 fps. Maybe they are low pressure. When I get a chance, I'll measure the bullet diameter.

It's common, depends on what powder was used and what charge, Happens a lot with reloads, Heck I get it on some factory 9mm in a blowback carbine,Just soot.carbon no big deal
Usually just on one side of the brass.

Nothing that will hurt the gun or you but;

if a reload, it is a sign that more powder is needed in that load or ammo
for the case to seal off to the chamber,

which in turn will usually result in better accuracy, for the shooter.

If the price is right, go for it.
