Default Indication of coming shortage?

Stopped by the local Sportsman’s Warehouse yesterday for a couple of miscellaneous fishing supplies. Walked through ammo section. VERY slim pickings for center fire hand gun and rimfire compared to the last time I was there EXCEPT for 9mm Winchester Target. They had a boat load for 16.99 a box.

Anyone else seeing similar?

Default No, I don't buy that much.........

...store bought ammo. But I am interested and I'll keep my eyes open. I do buy some ammo when the price is down and supply is up.

Inventory time. Most retailers let stock dwindle before they do inventory. Also making room for new stock after price increases and trade shows.

I look at your question more having to do with Sportsmans Warehouse. I'm in Frederick Co. VA. and we had a SW open here last spring. Right from the start our local hardware store beat them on both ammo and gun prices. Sometimes by a lot.

None of the steady shooters at our local range have bought much there. As an active benchrest shooter and RSO I get around to most of the firearms related groups and the general consensus is they don't last a year.

I keep reading and hearing about an upcoming ammo shortage but have yet to see any real signs of one .
I pretty much just buy online and there's plenty out there and at pretty good prices.
I stopped in at the local Cabela's in Hamburg Pennsylvania and they had a good supply of most ammunition. Their prices are pretty high but they did have a good amount .
They were a little low on primers but they did have some and their stock of powder was decent as well.
The year is yet early and we have a ways to go and anything can happen so if you're not already stocked up on ammo and reloading supplies now is likely a good time.

With the recent California ammo ban being lifted for a 5 day window until the decision was stayed by the 9th circuit, Californians bought nearly 30 million rounds in that timeframe. I have heard that a lot of inventory from other states was bought up and they are waiting on a restock from manufacturers

For several years there have been perpetual indications of shortages and they're not going away anytime soon. Buy what you need when you find it. I wouldn't be too concerned about price. If you intend to actually use the components or ammo, having them in hand is worth a lot more than cost. If you just like to stockpile, I guess it really doesn't matter.

That was my thought as I walked through the store. Low inventory on a lot of outdoor gear. Hope that is the case.

Nah, it’s just one store. Go to any of the popular online sellers and you’ll see everyone is pretty much fully stocked. Prices are still high but slowly falling.

Why would people be panic buying now?

Pick up some whenever you can. A box a week works.

I have a buddy that works in the "military industrial complex". His company manufactures approximately 1.5 billion rounds of what he termed as rifle and 20mm every quarter right now. He emphasized it is NOT going to the civilian market.

Most SW will beat any local prices by 5-10 percent.

The online sellers don't seem to be short. Prices are still inching down on 9mm range fodder.

Don’t most businesses do inventory in December and January?

Irrelevant of what the future brings, the sellers need to keep selling, they need to keep the incoming cash flow going. Even if they know their stock probably won't be able to be replaced, they need to sell. Better to sell for the cash flow than not selling their stock and not having any incoming cash flow. Cash flow is what keeps businesses operating.

Unless they are giving stuff away, Sportsman's Warehouse has lost me as a customer forever.

About a year ago, I was ordering a Ruger Wrangler online from Sportsmans Warehouse. I had the gun and some boots in my cart and when I went to check out, I was greeted with a popup that said I could save 15% on my order by opening an SW card. It worked out to about $45 so I clicked the link.

My credit score is golden. Between my Discover and my Mastercard, I could buy a small house. However, I was declined. I called customer service and was told there was nothing that I could do. I called the bank and was told that the discount would only apply if I was approved at the time of purchase.

I emailed customer service and was told that they'd call me but they never did.

When I went to pick up my stuff, I told the store manager what had happened and he said, "Oh, that's par for the course."

About a month later I got a letter telling me that they needed more info to approve my application. A day late and a dollar short.

Now about once a month I get a "pre-approved" offer from Sportsman's Warehouse for their credit card.

FYI that discount doesn’t apply to firearms.

I would hope that the members here now "get the fact" that if you are going to be in this hobby and CCW/EDC for a time, you had better procure what you need for carry, practice and recreational uses. In general, the prices and availability will only get worse. The anti gun movement has gotten extremely aggressive and they have figured out that guns don't go bang without ammo. Cars don't run without gasoline.
