Just wondered if you could shoot 45 Auto Rim in 45 Colt Revolver brands? EX: S&W 25 and Ruger Blackhawk. Have not heard it ever mentioned. Bob

The rim is too thick so the cylinder can't be closed or rotated in a S&W.

One can have a Single Action like a Ruger Blackhawk modified to take AR ammo. Jack Huntington, JRH Precision, does this...

This question opens up a big can-o-worms .

The short simple , practical answer is no ... but ...
... with enough money and work , 45 colt revolvers have been modified ... both Ruger and S&W ... to shoot the 45 auto-rim ... Now this sorta messes them up for 45 Colt shooting because of the rim difference .
The most practical conversion is an Ruger Blackhawk wit three convertable cylinders , 45 Colt , 45 acp and 45 A-R ...

I'm sure someone has figured out other ways to use one cylinder and shoot all three rounds ... but I don't know who does it !

Not that I know of on the .45 Colt m25 but they do it on other S&W guns. Dave Keith has done it for one of the forum members on an older gun.

PS: Seems someone HAS done this as there is one listed for sale in the classifieds on this forum now. Not sure why anyone would do that with as many 1917's floating around as there are that already take the AR , not to mention the Brazilians available for a lot less than a .45 Colt m25.

You'd likely have to change the sight adjustment for each chambering. It would seem much more practical to get a revolver chambered for each cartridge even if that suggestions lacks the novelty of a convertible revolver.

Try the .45 CAS. Size of an acp, rimmed to fit LC chamber or .45 acp cylinder.

...edit my above post to add that one has to have a Blackhawk .45 ACP cylinder machined to take the AR...not the .45 Colt cylinder...

As noted above the rim thickness difference will not let the .45 Colt headspace correctly if remachined to run Auto Rim...

I do have a friend who machined his 625 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt to take .45 ACP via moon clips and still be able to shoot .45 Colt.

Works great in a 625.

My "spare" revolver cylinders have never been the revolver that they came....Guess they could be used for pencil holders....I really have a problem changing calibers then having to waste ammo to sight it and waste ammo when you change it back to the other caliber and re-sight it.......I have guns in the "other" calibers to solve those problems.

I have a modified S&W M1917 that shoots all three 45 rounds, Colt and ACP with moon/half-moon clips. TK Custom is the only source I have found for the 45 Colt moon clips.

I like the 45 Auto Rim for my plinking loads because mooning and demooning rounds is a PITA.

The 45 Cowboy Special with brass from Starline is my latest project for plinking loads for my 45 Colt revolvers.

When I'm killing cans and dirt clods a fast reload is not important so I don't use clips. Most cases can be pulled out with fingers but if one does stick I use to rim of another case to pry it loose. Larry

In a word...... no. The AR rim is too thick.

In a Ruger convertible couldn't you just machine the .45 ACP cylinder to take .45 AR? .45 ACP would still work in the same cylinder since it headspaces on the case mouth. But since the .45 AR brass is uncommon and expensive I don't know what practical purpose this would have. You'd be spending money to be able to use expensive brass.

Although it can be a bit hard to find upon occasion, Starline 45 AR brass costs about the same as 357 SIG, 44 Special, etc.

Now the AMMO can be "uncommon and expensive", but the brass isn't especially so...

I used to shoot .45 AR out of my .45-70 Rolling Block Buffalo Rifle.

Haven’t seen one of those rounds in years.

Used 45AR in a 25 and also in a couple of cut Webley's, though you always download for the "Ex-455s" since a standard 45 ACP is above proof loads for the Webley.

Because you would not need to. Any cylinder made to fire 45 ACP will fit 45 AR too.

How did that shoot with such a large difference in bullet diameters between the .45 AR and the .45-70? I have a Shiloh Sharps .45-70 but never thought about trying .45 AR ammo in it. Seems like accuracy would be very poor.
