Personally I think the current prices on 22LR and primers are now the norm. Because of inflation and rising costs of everything it takes to get 22LR and primers to the shelves of your LGS, these prices are here to stay. You are definitely not the problem!

There's plenty of supply (common calibers) to meet current demand at current prices. Ammo is probably one of the most stable commodities currently. I just finished a year long buying spree, prices haven't risen Joe

The “problem” I see is that you have a good start.
I don’t see prices dropping significantly and as long as you can afford it keep on keepin on.

IMHO “when you don’t need it” is exactly the right time to buy ammo.

With this I shall agree. Unless the economy slips into a significant recession and we see deflation, the current prices are the lowest will be seeing.

As long as an item will sell and move off the shelf ... a dealer will sell that item at that price .
When that item stops selling and just sits on the shelf ... the dealer isn't making any money .
At some point the item starts to cost the dealer money ... and the dealer has a Sale ... he lowers the price to move the item ...

He will still make money , just not as much ... but why sell at a lower price when prople will buy it at a higher price ...

My good friend owned a gun shop and I worked for him for a couple years ... Buy Low - Sell as High as the market will allow .

No ... you aren't the problem ... it's our economic situation (bidenomics doesn't work) untill we get some economy resposible leaders ... high prices for everything will be the norm.
It ain't all on you ... or me ... I have hoarded up on 22 LR ammo , brass cases , powders and primers myself ! just plain old economics 101 at work .

If you need it, you will likely pay up for what you want. If you don’t need it you will buy when the price is attractive enough to store in your stockpile. That is how I buy powder, primers and rimfire. I will never need to pay crazy current pricing.

If you're the problem then I don't know what myself and many others like me are considered? I would say you're starting to stock ammo, whereas if I don't have 20000 22lr on hand it's time to source more.

Nope, I don’t think you are the problem, just as we all are not the problem.
Just remember that we are not hoarders.
We are without a doubt just collectors.

I agree with Spurdan too. If the prices for materials, labor, shipping, etc. are not changing, then there is little reason to expect the prices to drop.

That said, I'm going to go against the grain here because its hard to know what the profit margins are at each stage.

If you (or really we) are willing to pay the current price, then as said above, there is no incentive for the price to go down. In terms of economics - it doesn't matter why we are willing to pay the asking. As long as enough stock moves off the shelf that the retailer is not desperate for cash, the retailer will continue to charge that price.

That shouldn't change what you are doing. If you want X amount in your personal stock, so you have enough for your use through (fill in a time frame), then get it.

There is a hidden 'danger' with a consumable product (ammo) when we come to view it as expensive. We don't use it because it is too valuable and precious. Paul Harrell has mentioned this numerous times with respect to specialty ammo. Each of us has to ask ourselves if availability or price changes (up or down!) will that change our usage of what we've bought?

That's sort of a drift from the question, but economics really is about people and our behaviour so I think it ties in.

No, you are not the problem.

The inflationary pressures from an orgy of spending by (ALL) the rich men north of Richmond devaluing your dollar is THE problem.

They’re geared up to produce what sells in an average year.If people panic and start hoarding ,the shelves will be empty and,as we’ve seen in previous years, that generally causes more hoarding and perceived shortages

"The Problem" is the "Civilian Disarmament Disorder" plaguing our country. Stocking up within your means is the real common sense. Think of it as a vaccine against "CDD" - even if it doesn't totally prevent the disease, it certainly lessens the symptoms. You'll need a periodic booster.

My feeling is, if I don't buy it, someone else will. So I just keep buying as much as my bank accounts will allow.

It does not matter if you have a stash, if you need it or don’t need it. It doesn’t matter what color your shoes are or what you Uncle’s middle name is.

If the price is $xxx and you buy it, then absolutely, you are very much part of the “problem” if you are saying that the problem is the price is too high.

Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy it. You have free will! But if you think the price is lousy AND you buy it anyway, then absolutely, this is definitely your fault.

All I buy/use is CCI mini-mags because of their reliability in various semi-auto 22 rifles. I believe the current price range is stable and what it'll be in the future. That being the case, I watch for whenever Fin Fur Feather outfitters (6 stores in NE Ohio) puts them on sale and then grab some.

As we have seen many times in the past, something will cause another panic. Like the next election or some yet to be known event, with preparation you don't have to get caught up in the next one.

Be the wise ant...

If it's 22LR a whole lot of it. Fact is that if SHTF ever does happen I think the first thing everyone should grab is 22LR. Because what caliber you shoot won't matter, what will matter is how many rounds of that caliber you have.

I'm a living breathing example of that . I got cut short after one of the school shootings and everything went crazy with the ammo market . I paid way too much for .22 ammo but I was nearly out . Since then I've stacked it deep . I have enough to leave to my grandkids .

Angry I'm Sorry ...

but I find absolutely depressing that a box of 100 primers today is the same price as a case of 5,000 primers was 3 years ago.

Ya know, there is such a thing as not taking your .22 to the range, just like you can stop getting cheeseburgers three days a week or drinking beer. The only thing I'll overpay for is gas because it gets me to work. Nothing else is that vital.

A friend said 2 cheeseburger meals at Burger King set him back over $30. Another friend spent $55 for breakfast for 2 at IHOP.

I don't think ammo's going down any time soon.

As far as I can tell, prices ain’t dropping on anything.
So why would you think they would be dropping on ammo?

Cue the AC/DC up. “Cause I’m a problem child “. Buy what you can when it allows. Nothings ever gonna reset. Unfortunately it’s as good as it gonna be for a long time to come. Didn’t enjoy saying that.

If you're the problem so am I, just bought 1000 federal SPP for $83.00 and 1lb of w231 powder for $44.00 and 100 cci minnie mags for $10.99.
didn't really need any of it but..
I am at the point where after buying 3000 more bullets I should be set for life as far as center fire is concerned and rim fire isn't far behind the center fire. its peace of mind I am buying knowing I am set for life.

For those who enjoy shooting, it makes more sense to "overpay" (a relative term subject to interpretation) and have it than to bellyache about prices and do without.

I was into a regular buying pattern myself, but realized that at current shooting consumption, I have way more of every caliber than I will shoot the rest of my life.

I know a group of people that shoot quality .22 target rifles at 100 yards on any given Saturday. Many of them are not able to use quality target ammo because it is simply not available. The well-heeled guys send their rifle off to Lapua for testing and are then allowed to purchase a case (500 boxes) of ammo that performs the best in their particular rifle. When your into that game where a VooDoo .22 single shot costs $2K plus a 50X Nightforce at about equal value paying $20+ for a box of .22 ammo is of little consequence. I used to shoot the match with an older Anschutz 54 and $12 a box Eley Match, won a few but just got outgunned. Its a real triumph when one of the older guys wins the match with an old Model 52 Winchester that is as old as he is, basically because he can read the wind better. In most cases with .22 target rifles its all about the ammo and reading the wind, nice equipment does help. We had one guy would use an old re-barreled Martini single shot and beat them at their game, mostly due to his experience with wind.

I played that game for a while. Then thought why....... So now I just shoot against myself and talk to friends at the range.

Ammo is becoming like gold, and guns, prices keep going up, occasional dips but never loses alot of ground, it will never be worthless, and probably will be like currency at some point, able to trade a little bit for necessities.

I still honestly think primers powder and most hunting ammo are at their low price points. Farmers and ranchers are paying ridiculous prices for hunting ammo at auctions... most auctions with reloading supplies of any worthwhile amount bringing high prices...esp LRPs and large rifle types of powder. If anyone here is part of the "problem" we all are if we want to shoot in the future. Inflation is going to drive prices ever higher

I have several handguns in .22 LR that mirror their full sized and larger caliber brothers. I can shoot a couple of boxes of that and not feel guilty about the cost of the ammo. I also have numerous .22 LR rifles that I can practice with and again not feel guilty about the ammo used. Powder and primers are not a problem as of now, a friend and I bought from estate sales at very low prices before all this started.
