Default Wasn't Ready!

Friend finally showed up since last fall because the weather was finally great and apparently neither of us had any real plans for Easter anyway.

He bought his new unfired BCA .450 Bushmaster upper and I brought out my CMMG dedicated. 22LR upper.

Just to let you guys know, there is one heck of a difference in recoil between those two cartridges!

Glad he added a recoil pad!

...talk about flinching.

I've watched guys on YouTube going to shoot the next round when the .450 Bushmaster gun has jammed and they jerk the heck out of the trigger!

We hang baseball caps over our ejection ports to save that costly brass from being ejected into the woods and apparently one ejected into the cap and then bounced back into the gun, jamming it.

I didn't see it and on my next shot I yanked that stupid vented trigger of his so hard I'm surprised it didn't snap the thing in half!

HA!

BIG FUN!

I've heard that .450 Bushmaster is roughly equivalent to the .45-70 Govt cartridge.

.45-70 already packs a punch out of a hefty Lever Action Rifle, so I'm scared of what it would feel like to shoot a round of similar oomph out of a lightweight AR.

Last year I was strongly considering getting an upper chambered in .458 SOCOM, and I kept hearing from folks saying how stout the recoil is on that cartridge. For the record, .458 SOCOM isn't even as hot as .450 Bushmaster, as it's more in line with old-timey .45-70 Trapdoor Loads in terms of power, yet there were still more than a few folks telling me to brace myself, while others went as far as to suggest that I purchase an A2 stock and rubber recoil pad to go with it.

Not so, I don't know what you mean by hot but from hunting performance the heavier .458 caliber terminal perform is better.

Selecting KE numbers from manufactures means little - it is the terminal performance of the bullet that matters

Because many are still so nostalgic they still shoot 405 grain bullets out of their 45-70, these will be the heaviest recoiling of the 3 calibers,Shooting modern jacketed or monolithic loads in 300 grain range from from the 45-70 or 458 SOCOM recoil will be reasonable.

My wife shoots used 458 SOCOM on a bison hunt to good effect.

The 450 Bushmaster has a faster shooting impulse but again not that bad.

I consider the 450 Bushmaster a modern deer rifle cartridge,
that claim to fame is it can be fired from AR15 platform.
It is best suited for 100 deer yard hunting, yes you can shoot it to 200 yards but there a lots of better choices is your shooting out that far.

Sounds like it would make a good rifle for hogs....

Yep, normally I would agree but it had been several years since I fired anything heavier than a 5.56, and we were sitting on a dirt road shooting with our bypods resting on upside-down plastic buckets.

...and any other excuse I can come up with for flinching like crazy.

Sure was fun though, we had a great time!

Can't believe how thin the bolt wall is surrounding the cartridge rim, amazed the bolt lugs don't just shear off or something.
