I am just curious on your folks opinions of it.

Where i live, there are two places that sell ammunition under their own house label. They go online, and purchase cases of factory FMJ in various calibers, and when it arrives, they repackage it into new outer boxes that have their logo on the top.

And no data as to who actually made the ammunition.

I know at one place, the one place i know that is still in business, its what every military surplus over run from winchester that is online for 250$/1000. Ive seen the shipping cases, ive seen the winchester oute boxes in the trash, and seen the new boxes of their "in house manufactured ammunition" in piles on the shelves and floors.

Sure they have two complete hornady lock n load AP ammo plants mounted on a big table in the corner.... conveniently set up to "reload" 9mm/40sw/45acp fmj ammunition when the case tubes have been filled with 5.56 brass since the day the store opened up 2 years ago.
And they dont have a house brand 223 ammunition

I'm no business man, and I've never played one on TV, so I am at a total loss as to why these two concerns would bother repackaging ammo for sale.

My problem with what you describe is all the extra handling the ammo goes through. The less ammo gets mauled around the better, IMHO.

Ok, somebody buys a huge bulk order and repackages it. If it's good, fine. If it's not, bad. If I could buy a sample box and be guaranteed that it would be the same lot if I decided to purchase within a set period, I'd do it. But the problem is that nobody is good for their word, and I can buy bulk ammo online myself if I want. I quit buying 'remanufactured' ammo because it was invariably LOUSY. If I'm really hard up, I might buy some of the repackaged stuff. I'm probably a tad more adverse to it since I reload my own ammo.

Why would a company want to take on that kind of liability?

When I was running my gun department during the peak of the last big ammo shortage, I would literally buy all the ammo I could get, and put it out to sell, usually with purchase limits. Frequently, I chanced upon large bulk packages, particularly of 5.56 or 9mm ammo. It would have been easy enough to resell a 1000 round case of either, but that would have been helping just one customer. So I repackaged, using ziplock bags and labeling them with exactly what was in them. That way, a 1000 round case becomes 20 50-rd. bags. With a 2 bag limit, that allowed me to say "yes" to at least 10 customers frantically looking for ammo.

Ever seen the headstamp on the ammo brass?

My guess is they are selling someone else's reloads or got a deal on factory ammo from a company nobody wants to buy from. And I cannot think of any factory ammo the internet agrees is not worth buying. About the only ammo I heard people say to avoid was steel case 9mm and now that imports from Russia have been cutoff that has dried up.

If they'll let you look at it check the headstamps to see if the brass is mixed (most likely reloads aka "remanufactured") or some obscure brand. Either way I would buy something else.

I'm fortunate enough that I don't have to consider buying random packages of ammo.

I won't say I wouldn't buy that stuff, but I'd have to be pretty desperate. And not just 'save a couple of bucks per box' desperate.

Im fussy about ammo so unless I know who made it specifically, pass. Just like fuel for my race cars..if the cans aren't sealed and brand name..and dated..nope.

I wouldn't buy it. It's a pig in a poke. One major consideration would also be not knowing a lot number or other manufacturer's info if there was a problem or recall. I also would be circumspect of a store that would do that.

That seems suspicious to me and makes me question the quality of the ammo.

Honestly, if they're buying high quality ammunition from reputable manufacturers, then why would they feel the need to repackage it?

I don't know about you, but personally I'd feel more confident purchasing ammo packaged in a box with a familiar brand name on it like CCI, Federal, Hornady, Winchester, etc than "Bubba's Best Boolits".

It just raises too many questions... Why spend more money to repackage existing ammo? Were the original boxes damaged? If so, then why/how were they damaged? Is this ammo actually repackaged factory ammo isn't or somebody's handloads? Can you provide a list of the brands of ammo you repackaged? If no, then why, is it because it's all the cheapest, dirtiest, no-name brands of ammo available that it frankly looks better in generic store-branded packaging that sold in its original packaging? Are you just repackaging incomplete boxes of ammo that you're buying from Estate Sales, Auctions, Flea Markets, and Gun Shows?

I have a big regional sporting goods chain store neer by, a dunhams, in the older days of the early 2000s they would purchase russian spam cams of ammunition for 50$ on line, and sell it unopened for 30-50 pennies per round. As well as open on up and sell the paper packs inid for i think 6$ a hit.

Ive actually seen the FACTORY cases with the remington or winchester or blazer brass 9mm/40/45 acp ammunition in the corner. Ive seen the empty outer packs of these ammunition box in their garbage can.

But their setup is funny. The last time i went in, they had perhaps 30,000 rounds of various FMY. In fact they had so much they were using it as extra display shelving by stacking it 4' or so high and putting a door on top as a counter top.
They DO have JHP/JSP ammunition on sale, but they never have any cases of it on hand.

I have never actually seen them reload ammunition, or even DO anything with them. Its like these two presses are almost rusted in place. I actually dont believe they KNOW how to reload due to two things

1. I once asked the head honcho their if he could show me in person using his press on how to set up a seater/crimper die for 38 special as i had some issues with it. He had no idea how to do that, and he had no idea how to install a die into HIS own reloading press.
Despite spending countless hours claiming he was the one reloading all that wonderful ammunition when the store closed.

2. The guy doesnt know how/cant order powder from the official distributors that Hodgdon uses for that market, let alone for selling to customers

Sounds awfully sketchy to me, and I personally would not buy it...

Do those factory boxes have any overstamped markings? All of the major name brands have sold "seconds" at various times......... Normally ammo that has cosmetic defects or didn't meet the specs for a particular order but was still safe to shoot. When I was still in business we bought some lots from time to time. They were cheaper to buy and we sold them cheaper to the public too, in the box marked "seconds". The only time we ever repacked any ammo was when we bought very large bulk pack lots and broke them down into smaller quantities.

Otherwise, I can think of no good reason to repackage factory ammo.. If they really wanted their name on the boxes I suspect the manufacturers would make them a deal for either special packaging or simply do bulk sales with them providing the boxes. Makes no sense to do it the way described.
