Hello
Most of the 38 Special reviews that I did, in most cases, were shot with two guns.
A Taurus 85 Ulta Lite 2 inch barrel and a Smith & Wesson model 15 with a 4 inch barrel.
First I do forensic exam of the ammunition. Next I shoot a group while chronographing with each gun. 10 yards with the 2 inch Taurus 85 and 25 yards with the Model 15. Chronograph is a Oehler 35P
Then the ammunition is shot out of each gun into a 55 gallon plastic barrel of water. The bullets are then recovered, photographed and then measured for expansion. In cases where the bullet fragments and loses its jacket, a weight is taken with all the recovered material and also a weight taken with just the lead core.

I was quite pleased with the expansion out of the 2" 85 UL. Velocities were pretty amazing in both guns. I wouldn't say the the recoil Taurus 85 UL was brutal, but it was awfully close. Even so, I would feel quite comfortable carrying this ammo.
I didn't shoot these in water as it would be obvious that they would expand very well..

With an advertised BHN of 5 (pure lead) did the bullets lead the bore?

This is what I carry in just about all my .38s (except the Airweights) and several .357s. The other is the same load but a hardcast non-HP Keith bullet at the same velocity.

Basically this is just like the original .38-44/High Speed load marketed for the heavy frame .38s from the early 1930s till the early 1970s. 158s were 1115 fps from a 5" barrel and I believe 1180 with a 150 grain bullet.

With the gas checked bullet leading has not been a problem...

rockquarry; Short answer, yes, a little. Being that the bullet was virtually a full .358" in diameter and that they were gas checked, it could have been worse I'm thinking. But this ammo isn't something one would want to shoot a lot, or very often anyway. As the Buffalo Bore logo states, Strictly Business..

Thank you for the response. I tried pure lead in .38 Special some time ago just to see how much leading there would be. It was significant, but mine were plain base bullets. A gas check will cut down on leading with a pure lead bullet but won't eliminate it - exactly your experience.
