Good pocket holster for a J frame
I'm looking for a good pocket holster for my new 638. Right now it's riding in an Uncle Mike's #4 pocket holster and that works fine, I just figure a gun that nice deserves something better )
I used to have a Mika's pocket holster and liked it, but his wait time is 16-20 weeks right now. I've tried the Desantis Nemesis (twice) and it just doesn't work for me. I'd prefer something in leather. Any suggestions?

Black hills leather does a great job. I have them for j-frames, derringers. I also had him do a dual holster shoulder rig which is excellent. I was carrying my 638 in an uncle mike's # 3 before I got this one. Rudy produces excellent holsters at very competitive prices, with satisfaction guaranteed. Time is anywhere from 2-4 wks on most items. Good luck NO JUSTICE NO PEACE

Wait times for the best work are going to be inevitable. My J Frame is in a Pocket Concealment Sysytems Black Bird when pocket carried. Also like a the K&D Pocket defender.

I have found my Kramer to be the best wrap and ride for my 442.
The PCS Blackbird is next.

Personally, I would go back to the Mika. It's worth the wait. I tried several different pocket holsters before I bit the bullet and ordered a Mika about a year ago.
I will admit that despite the rave reviews, I wasn't totally sold on it when it first arrived. But I've grown to love it. It really settles in after wearing it a few times, and I wouldn't use anything else.

I recommend one of the PCS holsters. I use the French Curve for my j frame and really like it. I have posted pics of it previously on the forum. Here is a link to the owner's site. Craig from Lightning Arms carries them in stock.

FWIW, the Uncle Mike's holsters have the advantage of being machine washable. No, the dryer doesn't hurt them either.

The very best pocket holster I ever owned was a Milt Sparks PCH-R.
They are $80 + $12 shipping and a 6 month wait, but most definitely worth every penny and every hour of every day.
As soon as I have the funds, I'm ordering another one. Mine got sold with the 442 I had in it last year.

I agree. They're low profile too. I have one for my P3AT and love the thing.

ab4ka: is that a cockapoo in your photo? I have two myself.
I have tried dozens of J-Frame holsters over the years.
The Desantis Nemesis is the best pocket holster I've found, cheap, comfortable, and it stays in your pocket.
The Alessi Talon is the best clip holster I've found, not too expensive, really strong clip and great profile.
Those are the two I use most often.

The Uncle Mike's works well so I suppose I should just stick with it...although I'm sure I'll keep my eyes open at the next gunshow

MIKA
I've used the Mika for my 642 for a few years. It stays put and doesn't print in most pants. Also have an Uncle Mikes for my P-11.

I use a size #3 Uncle Mike's pocket holster for J-Frames.
I have a Mika for a 649 that I used for about 5 minutes and put it back in the "holster box", and a Kramer for the smaller 340 that I used for about 4 months prior to boxing it. There is also a 5 minute old Nemisis in the box.
I just wash the Uncle Mike's every few months, then throw it away and replace it once a year.

When I got my Del Fatti IWB I took the clip off my interim Uncle Mike's $7 *** and used that...but to be honest, I rarely pocket carry.....

Yep, I agree. I have tried a number of the big name pocket holsters and keep coming back to my well worn Uncle Mike's holster, affectionately known as 'Foamy'.

Lobo Leather
I got this one from Lobo Leather. If memory serves, $29 shipped with less than 2 weeks turnaround. Ray is a member of this Forum, is a great guy to deal with and does excellent quality work for the money.

I've tried a lot of pocket holsters for my several Centennials. I have a Mika's on order because of the rave reviews but other holsters work very well for me, including both the Uncle Mike's and the DeSantis Nemesis. I also like the Safariland pocket holster but its hard plastic interior will eat the finish off a gun in short order. It sure is slick on the draw, however. My favorite is the Galco Horsehide model. It's wide and stiff, once it's in the pocket it doesn't budge and it's sometimes difficult to get it out when you want to. But it's hard to quarrel with the value in an Uncle Mike's Number 3 or Nemesis for the J-frames.

I have a older Kramer leather pocket holster but rarely ever use it because it weighs almost what the gun does..
Instead I use an Uncle Mikes IWB like the one Sipowix shows that has the clip removed & it is my #1 Pocket Holster for my 642/942 Centennial..
It fits the gun better than the pocket holster that Uncle Mikes makes for the J Frame..
I've always wanted to try a Mika but would think that it's Too Bulky just by looking at them..
It would probobly end up with these in my stash..

They're not bad, but the little tab that is meant to cover the revolver's hammer always stuck out when I owned mine...

Yup,
The Centennial was invented for pocket carry. I'm not sure regardless of whose holster was being discussed, I'd ever feel totally confident with an exposed hammer model? At least not till it'd spent some quality time with me, a pot of coffee and my Dremel tool!

So far my Bodyguard and an Uncle Mike's pocket holster have been a great combo, but I'd still like to get something in leather.

I cannot tell from these pictures, nor from these same pictures at the Sparks web site, does the side shown face out, or does it face agains the leg?
If this is the side that faces out, does'nt it print on the pants leg?
I've never used one of these pocket holsters but will soon and i had thought there wassupposed to be a flat side facing out so it won't print?

More choices.......
Here is a pocket holster made by Don Hume. They are affordable and can be purchased on the well-known bidding site. Just saw the Kramer and it looks great. And the Milt Sparks, and the Lobo...........

I carry a 637 in a DeSantis Nemesis. It's stay put, easy to draw from, and it's one of the least expensive holsters out there. A best bargain!

The boned/molded side is against your leg. The side facing out is flat.

Mika's holsters
Bob Mika is saying on his order page that by January 31, 2010 he'll be all caught up on back orders and turn around time will be 2-3 weeks. Also he's offering quite a number of different color combos.

I used to cut up an old boot, like a Corcoran jump boot, and use the tongues to make a pocket holster. My sewing machine would go through two layers of that leather OK. I tried to make one out of the leather from the upper, but it was too thick for my sewing machine. Now I just buy Mica's. They're everything a pocket holster needs to be for me. Not too thick, not so stiff that it doesn't conform to my pocket, light and cheap. I only want a pocket holster to prevent the gun from poking holes in my pocket and to not stick to the gun when I'm pulling it out of my pocket. I've tried some leather pocket holsters that were too tight on the gun.
I'd go with Mica. The J-Frame holster also fits my Colt Det. Special.

Don Hume JIT belt slide works fine for me. Also works on the belt. Make sure it's loose enough for the revolver to come out without the holster. When I put the holster on a belt and bend it around my body, it tightens up plenty 'nough to hold the gun securely.

Moist leather is hell on gun finishes, and moisture can be a problem sometimes in a pocket carry situation.
Hard plastic is rough on the guns too.
That leaves the humble little Uncle Mike's #3 and the DeSantis Nemesis as my choices.
I just replaced my year-old Uncle Mike's #3, with . . .
a new Uncle Mike's #3 for my nice-condition, 1971 Model 37 . . . my "always in the pocket" gun. It has done a fine job of treating the finish gently, like a baby . . . and that's important to me!!!
Just as important, the holster is really "stealthy" and makes the gun seem to disappear in the pocket. Just toss it in and go!
WHY NOT A NEMESIS? Couldn't get one locally and my local gun pusher had the Uncle Mike's in stock.
T.
PS: The Uncle Mike's will not come out with the gun if one rotates the grip outward slightly while drawing upward while applying a slight pressure against the leg.
With practice it is very fast and smooth!
PPS: I know I feel a little dirty and "guilty" using a cheap synthetic holster. It seems like we should spend a lot more . . . but the cheap synthetic is better on the gun, so . . . why not?!!!

I have Uncle Mike's, DeSantis Nemesis and Galco Pro for different guns.
UM is cheapest, but flimsy.
Nemesis is a good synthetic with a sticky outer surface that keeps it in your pocket.
Galco is rough finish leather and well made. I did have to apply waterproofing to it to keep sweat from soaking through.

I'll have to go against the grain here, I got a Mika Holster and I'm not that crazy about it. I prefer the Desantis Nemesis myself. I don't know if I didn't get the right one or what but I find it somewhat bulky in my pocket and the gun way to loose in it. I noticed this is an old thread btw.

I don't know if Mika is slipping or what. I ordered a couple from him and he sent the wrong one, then there was a problem with one, he was apologetic and all, but I ended up with no Mika holster after it was all done. Wait I take that back, I still have the one that was for a different gun that he said I should just keep.
I think Mika's materials are much nicer than Uncle Mike's. Maybe he was just going through a difficult period or something.
