then I'm carrying my 4" Model 19 in a vertical shoulder holster under a jacket.

Depends on the weather and situation.

During archery season I CC my 340PD stoked with 135 grain .357 mag.
During muzzle-loader season I OC a Ruger Old Army .45 black powder
The rest of the time I CC a 329 in .44 mag with Buffalo Bore 255gr. Keith.

In Indiana for the longest time it was illegal to be in possession of a handgun while hunting unless it was handgun season. That changed thank God.

Exactly. A lot of states are like that. Never just assume you can open carry "in the woods".

I love my 3" SP101 for woodsbumming. It's compact enough to be out of the way, but comfortable to shoot with stout loads. I carry it when hiking or horseback riding.

When I'm hunting I pack something a bit larger (not concealed) and on long trips on horse I add either a .22lr bolt action rifle or a 12ga pump action shotgun. Depending on where I'm going, time of the year, etc.

For a while now my hiking gun in AZ has been a S&W 327 PC with the snubbie barrel. Very light and carries great in a Kramer holster. Baggy t-shirt and I'm all set. It is legal to carry open here but there is no advantage or reason to possibly freaking out other hikers, so I conceal even when I don't have to.

Open carry is not universally allowed, even if you have a license (e.g., Florida and Texas). Besides, it unnecessarily alarms the clueless types.

Depending on the situation, I would carry a SIG P220 Carry, a 3" S&W 686 or a 629 "Mountain Gun. An OWB "pancake" holster is a lot more comfortable when hiking or climbing than an IWB, and a short jacket or vest provides concealment.

For the woods I would probably go with my 1006 in a shoulder rig with 2 spare mags. Though I need to get something a little more "ballsy" than the 175gr. Silver Tips I keep in it right now.

My 3" 629 or my 4" 25 in my Maxpedition manpurse. It looks enough like a camera bag that nobody seems to notice. It'll even hold my camera!

I carry a 4" 629 "Mountain Gun" in a belly pack loaded with 240 gr JSP. I call it "Bear Repellant."

Oregon is an open carry state. You don't need a permit to do so, except in some of the cities.

I don't see very much open carry on public trails. When I do, it is usually those mounted on horses. I don't OC in areas where I am likely to see people, preferring CC.

We don't have grizzly or brown bear here, just black bear, cougar and the occasional low-life, so defense appropriate calibers are sufficient. I would rather a low life not know I am armed. I consider that to be an advantage.

When I do OC in a "just to be doing it" way, it is often one of my K frames, usually a Model 19 in a full flap style holster. At other times, a Colt Woodsman Sport.

Here in Pennsylvania whenever I walk my dogs through the woods, I'm normally carrying concealed. There are times when I do get the proverbial wild hair and carry openly. Those times I place Mjolnir (S&W Model 25-5) on the strong-side hip and one speed loader in my vest or jacket pocket.

It depends WHERE I'm going. Local "walkabout" in the area, I carry my Taurus 99 like I used to when working private security. If I'm going 'deeper' into the forest I carry my S&W .44 in a crossover holster or in my quick-draw type holster. When hunting I carry the .44 in the Xover with a sheath-knife opposite.

It is legal to carry in National Parks or Forests if you have a CC license in that state, including open carry if allowed by that state. However, open carry would cause undue alarm among other visitors. If your only concern were two-legged predators, anything you would carry concealed for self-defense would be appropriate. In bear country, I prefer a 3" .357M or .44M revolver, which I could carry in an IWB holster under a jacket or untucked shirt.

If you wear a backpack, a strong side holster is not practical. You could conceal in the backpack or tummy pack (a tell-tale in CC states), or a cross-draw belt holster.

woods much anymore, but many years ago while walking old railroad right of ways with my son, I carried a .22 revolver. This was in North central Indiana. Today, 40 years later, it would be a 44 mag, likely my 329PD, OWB, covered, or IWB covered.

Keltec PF-9 usually. Wearing a pack is kind of a PIA with IWB carry but it's doable.

This is what REALLY bothers me about my imminent move to Texas. I won't be able to go anywhere with a pistol on my hip (or a rifle in my hands). Takes a lot of the enjoyment out of trekking around the woods to say the least.

I carry a Ruger Alaskan 44 or 454 in a simply rugged belt holster covered with a untucked shirt or coat when I am out and about. The most dangerous animal in my woods are deer ticks but what can I say, I love big bore handguns. I think I will try the 454 on deer next year.

You can open carry a handgun on your own property, or on land that you rent, lease, or control (as in a deer lease, etc.) You can't open carry a handgun anywhere else. The laws concerning rifles and shotguns are somewhat different, but I'm not conversant with them since I don't own any and have no interest in them.

You would think that if any state in the union had open carry, Texas would...but no. I wish we had fully open carry...not that I would, necessarily, certainly not all the time, but it would be nice to have the option, and not to have to worry about printing, inadvertent flashes, etc.

I prefer the revolvers out of doors. So I have carried in a shoulder holster for longer barrels, or in a fanny pack for shorter barrels.

Either my Shield 9 or Colt 1911 .45 depending on what I'm doing, where I am, and who I'm with. I've ran into a bear during bow season before and was glad to have my .45 just in case, but concealing the Shield is much easier. When hunting or alone, especially in areas with no cell service (much of the UP woods..) it'll be the Colt.

Almost everything I own is concealable. It's my way of keeping my collecting/accumulating urges under control. From that pretty large pool, I carry whatever I want.

Here in the people's republic of Maryland, my 'just in case' gun in the woods is my S&W 460xvr 8/3-8" loaded with three rounds of Grizzly caliber 454 PUNCH bullets and two rounds of Grizzly caliber 460 PUNCH bullets. Like an old timer taught me in the military "you can never have too much gun or too much ammo"...just in case. Oh, my shoulder rig is the Black Mamba with a Galco extra rounds band wrapped snugly around the holster. Okay, now take me to jail...

If I can't carry the way I want I will find a location where I can enjoy myself in the manner I please. Its one of the main reasons I go into the outdoors. I don't go where the rules don't suit me. I won't even hunt on the million acre CMR near here simply because being under control of Federal wildlife rules you can't have a loaded rifle in your truck. Way to many other ignorant little rules besides. I just go the other direction to a bigger spot where I can carry as I please and not be bothered.
Part of the reason I moved back home to Montana. Tired of silly laws. Here an having a empty gun is considered about the same carring a jack handle.

A couple of years ago I was over at one of the secondary Grand Canyon visitor locations. When you visit the Nat Parks , you are surrounded by foreign visitors. This place had a sign at the door announcing don't bring in a gun. The foreign visitors were quite interested in this sign and mostly discussing it in their languages. So I really couldn't get the gist of what they were saying. But they were pointing and talking.
I don't mind seeing all the foreigners. I usually talk to them and tell them I hope you have a great visit to our country. I just wish that I could see more Americans at their National Parks!
PS my 642 was safely locked in my SUV.

Hey now! Cali is not the only place on the Left coast. Open carry is allowed here in the state of
Washington <----- part of the "left coast" although it is the right coast.

WOW! If only I had ever had THAT problem! I've backpacked the Colorado Rockies since late 1971. There was no ccw allowed at that time. Even when CO finally allowed CCW, it applied only to Colorado residents. I moved from the state in the mid-'70s, so could not carry concealed.
THAT meant that if it was raining or snowing I STILL had to leave my firearm exposed. In colder weather, such as May or October, I had to carry it exposed outside my jacket. I wish I could carry concealed in CO for just those reasons.

Perhaps I am mistake, but I believe that open carry is not allowed in National Parks generally, that the law which was passed only allows for concealed carry. Is that not correct?

What I carry, whether concealed in a backpack or fanny pack, depends mostly on whether I'm concerned about two legged or four legged threats. I'll usually carry a 4" 500 in griz country. Where I'm not worried about griz, I'll carry a 629PC 2 5/8" or a 66 in 2.5".

686+ 2 1/2" in a milt sparks vmII. loaded up with 158gr. sjwc HOT loaded. more than enough down here in FL. my real worry would only be a big hog, and when i know ahead of time my series 70 colt combat commander in .38 super. loaded with some corbon 125 gr. jhp. they muzzle at about 1500 fps and will dispatch about anything i may encounter. that also rides in a vmII... as you may have guessed i like milts stuff.

I live in an area where you are limited to 3 concealed carry guns and open carry is prohibited.

I selected my M60 3", adjustable sight 357 as one of the three so I can carry it in the woods.

It will handle heavy 357 loads -- not real comfortable -- but it can handle them if I'm worried about 4 leg critters..

I carry a 3 inch 629 in a Haugen Leather paddle holster or sometimes a 37 in my pocket.
At times I'll carry my 28 with 4 inch barrel in an old S&W branded shoulder holster.
If I'm deer hunting it may be a 8 3/8 657 in a Bianchi shoulder holster or Super Blackhawk with red dot in a bandolier holster. These two might not be concealed though.

Default NOT A LAWYER

But if I am not mistaken, even in the gunshine state o/c of a firearm on state land/wma's/parks is not allowed except during hunting seasons & it is a legal hunting implement. If you have a valid CCL then you may carry about anything as long as it is concealed. My main concerns here are #1 snakes & a revolver gets the reliability nod for that, either my edc mdl 640, ruger speed 6 snub, or Sig 239 single stack 40 semi which has worked fine for snake shot (in practice). I would not care to try my luck against a CLOSE RANGE charging Panther/ Bear/ big hog, or pretty much ANYTHING with almost any weapon, let alone a CC sized pistol.

If I want to conceal carry in the woods, it is a 4" S&W 29-2 .44 magnum. If I want to open carry, it is an 8 3/8" 29-2 or an 8" Colt Anaconda. If I am handgun hunting, it is a 10 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 magnum.
