Default Ruger LCR seems like a worthy revolver, any holster suggestions?

Had a very pleasant range visit and gun trading day with a long time friend and shooting partner today, we burned a lot of rifle and pistol powder and wound up with me buying a Ruger LCR revolver he had tired of.

I put about 50 rounds of my pet cast lead handloads through it, found it to be very accurate for a gun of it's size, nice trigger and sights, good pointability. I think it shoots better than a Model 640 Centennial I once owned, and it's a lot lighter to boot.

This seems to be the perfect backup piece for a law enforcement officer, or deep concealement when you definately don't want to get noticed as carrying.

So, how do you carry your LCR or comparable Smith? I'm thinking of some sort of pocket holster, worn with a pair of baggy shorts or pleated front khakis...

Is that really a magazine for a revolver?

I took my wife to a local gun shop the other day and she tried out a number of guns. She is very tactile sensitive; she instantly dismisses a gun if she doesn't like it when she grips it. She really liked the Ruger LCR revolver with the Crimson Trace laser grips. Especially since she has a hard time with conventional sights due to her vision (she only uses 1 eye and has no depth preception).

Can anyone give me a review of their LCR? The good, the bad? I'll probably buy it for her soon, but wanted to hear from any owners first if possible. I showed her a magazine review of the S&W Bodyguard .38, but she didn't like that the laser button is on top and that it has multiple modes (she likes the very simple CT scheme of on when you grip it, off when you let go).

I have had both...the Bodyguard .38 and the Ruger LCR...and I liked them both. I trade a lot, and on a whim, I traded them both for something else. I regret trading the LCR...it shot well, and was very comfortable. I wasn't quite as fond of the BG .38...no real issues with it, just that the LCR felt a lot better. I currently have a 642 (new no-lock model) that I plan on giving to my wife, and I will be getting another LCR now that they are available in .357 Mag. I think the LCR is a great CCW revolver, and I carried it in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster. I have ordered one of Mika's pocket holsters, and I will use that for my LCR (to be purchased) and use the Uncle Mike's holster for the 642, which will be my wife's purse gun.

I have an LCR that I carry fairly frequently as a backup. It is fitted with the CT Lasergrips. I like it a lot. Other than my 37-2, it has the best factory trigger of any snubby I've ever owned or shot, and I've owned and shot a lot of them. My only real complaint is with the CT grips. CT copied the J-frame LG-405 grips, as to general configuration, but did not use the soft backstrap of the 405s. I have 405s on my 340PD, and they make a huge difference in felt recoil on that little beast.

The LCR fits nicely in an Uncle Mike's pocket holster that goes for about $8. Fits into a front pants or shorts pocket perfectly. A little bulge but no printing. Doesn't look much different from your wallet in the other pocket. The butt is hidden in most pants/shorts, but a shirt worn outside the belt that just covers the top of the pockets helps a bit. I carry mine all the time in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. No problems whatsoever. Carry a speed strip in the other pocket or cargo pocket if you have one.

Well, for now I got an Uncle Mikes Inside the Pocket holster and an HKS speedloader, tried it with a pair of pleated front khaki trousers and it concealed very nicely. I might pick up a nicer leather inside the pocket holster later, but for now the Uncle Mike's works.

I'm really liking this LCR revolver, I can see it being very useful for when you don't want to carry a full size revolver. I can even carry it canoeing in the vest pocket of my PFD (life preserver), wrapped up in a zip lock bag in the event of a dunking.

The trigger is amazing, I've never been able to shoot a compact revolver as well as this one.

Tagua makes a molded leather holster for it for strong side or iwb. Fobus also has a paddle holster for it. Gazelle will be coming out with a full line of holsters soon for just about any auto or revolver you can think of.(Even a leather paddle for the Taurus Judge). I will try to post an let everyone know when I start getting them in. Right now all they have for a S&W is a belt slide with a mag pouch for the 5906.

I bought the LCR for my son to carry as a backup and liked it so much that I got one for myself.
I use a crossbreed holster for mine and don't even know its there. very comfy and easy to re holster
hope this helps.

What I'm using now is an inside the waistband leather holster with a spring clip. The clip slips over the fabric of the trousers, belt goes over the whole shebang, it's almost invisible.

I normally carry a full size "K" frame revolver IWB, but there are certain social occasions where one doesn't want to take any chance of printing or letting folks know you are carrying, that's when the Ruger LCR cairried inside the waistband is perfect.

The holster I got I actually found at a flea market, but it is a quality one made by Backwoods Leather in Portsmouth, Va. They set up at gun shows all over the Tidewater area..

And welcome to the Smith and Wesson Forum, old friend!

Greetings:

I'm hoping to piggy-back, rather than hi-jack this thread. I need some advice about the Ruger LCR and was hoping I could get it here. I saw some used ones at a local store recently for $349.99 each. Some had the box, some didn't. There were 3 total and 2 had the XS Dot night sight and the last one had the plain front sight. All 3 were chambered for .38 Special +P. None had the CT Lasergrips.

Questions:
1) is the price good/appropriate assuming all 3 LCRs were in excellent, LNIB condition?
2) How does the LCR compare in size with a J-frame, specifically, a Model 642?
3) Is the LCR cylinder smaller, or about the same size as a J-frame?
4) If you had your choice, would you choose the LCR, or a Model 38?

Thank you for your advice and input.

Regards,

Dave

I think the trigger on the LCR is better than the J frame Smith and Wessons, they are almost identical in size.

$350 seems to be the going rate for a used one around here (Virginia)...

I think a no lock Model 38 will have more resale value in the future, I think the Model 38 has the single action trigger if you want a precise shot....

The LCR is a more utilitarian option, a carefree revolver that you won't worry about scratching.

I think the trigger on the LCR makes it a better shooter, better chance of hitting if you ever need it for defense.

I appendix carry a Galco "Stow an Go" for my LCRs. I tried pocket carry with a Galco and an Uncle Mike's, but I wear jeans or coveralls so it never worked for me, I guess slacks are a must for that. I bought one when they first came out and have since sold it to my pops to fund a 357 LCR. I absolutely love them and am thinking about getting another!

I carry my LCR occasionaly but usually go back to my light weight J-frame with the Apex kit. The LCR has a great trigger but has one flaw. When shooting rapid fire it is easy to not release the trigger all the way which short strokes the gun. The j-frame is more forgiving of rapid fire. Since I see these guns as up close and rapidly fired tools I get concerned about this problem.

One other issue has to do with the grips. I bought the small grip and the standard grip. The small is smoother and easier to draw from a pocket but affords little purchase for the hand. The standard grip handles and shoots great but sticks in my pocket when I draw. I can't find an after market grip like S&Ws little banana grip which would solve the problem. I didn't want a laser grip.

All in all I'm glad I bought it. I tried the S&W polymer revolver before buying and the trigger was so inferior I didn't consider it.

I have a Mika Pocket Holster made for my 442. The LCR fits perfectly in the Mika. Slides right out.

Trigger is better on the LCR. LCR also seems to dampen felt recoil.

I love my LCR.

You left out lanyard carry. Otherwise, I think you covered every option. Nice.

Cool Alessi LCR IWB

Got this Alessi holster with some stuff and I don't have a LCR.
Judging by the way my J frame M37 fits in it, the LCR is a little larger than the J frame. If you would like this holster, shoot me a PM.
Peace,
gordon

If you are talking about the LCR in 38 special, then that is what I own. Expect lots of "drama" with +P rounds in it; loud report and muzzle flash and very tiring (not painful) recoil. Standard velocity 38 rounds are perfectly fine, however in that very light weight revolver. Trigger pull is good, and one can expect consistent hits at defensive distances. (20 ft. or less) In my personal experience, I would select the Ruger over the Smith J-frame revolvers due to better shooting comfort with the Ruger.

I like the 357 LCR. I never found the perfect holster for it but it is the most comfortable 357 I have ever carried. I have several holsters for it. Some I modified and one I had made. The best I found so far is Uncle Mikes Sidekick #12. You would think it a little undersized but works best for me. You can use it IWB or in front pocket if you tighten the clip by shaping it with a hair dryer so it will stay put when drawing. Truth is, the he little revolver will stay put IWB at 4 oc with the but forward, without a holster, if you have tight fitting jeans.
