I'd bet this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find anything with a quick search.

I have an M&P.40fs and love it, but its just too big for me to conceal comfortably. It seems as though the natural thing to do is to get an M&Pc, but I have been intrigued by the PPS for a while now. I have not had the chance to try one, but I intend to. In the meantime, I'd love to hear about any relevant experiences anyone here has had with the two. I realize that being a S&W forum the opinions expressed here are likely to be somewhat biased, but I've read some on a PPS forum already so I suppose the other side probably has a good argument too.

One primary question I have is: does the 1/4 inch difference in width make that much of a difference? I'm 5'9" around 185#, 32"waist.
Thanks in advance.

I've shot both, but own neither, so my experience with either gun is admittedly limited. That said, the one major thing I really didn't like about the PPS was the magazine release system it uses. Try as I may, I just couldn't find a way to use it as efficiently and with as much control over the weapon as I can with the familiar "push button" release that the M&Pc uses. The other two "complaints" I had about the PPS is it's single-stack magazine (I prefer MORE ammunition capacity rather than less), and the grip seems to be nearly the perfect size for me to really pinch the heck out of my little finger with the base plate on the magazine on 9 out of 10 reloads. With the M&Pc, on the other hand, I didn't have that problem as my finger was just above the mag well opening.

I can't imagine either of them being hard to conceal at all with the proper holster/belt/clothing selection. I carry a Sigma every day; Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, and it's considerably larger than either of those models and I have no issues with keeping it adequately concealed.

PPS

PPS IMO has a bigger grip front to back, which my not fit your hand. It did

not fit mine. I shot the PPS in 9mm. I own/owned MP 9 and 40 c.

I still own the 9c. Love it. I had an Apex sear installed. MP as you

know, can exchange backstraps for larger or smaller hands. Check out

Kahrs also. I carry a PM 45.

I had a PPS 40 for a short period of time.At about the 300 round mark, the extractor fell out..I had it fixed and got rid of it.I'm sure it was just a freak deal that might never happen again. However,I was only using regular Federal Ball Ammo from Walmart ...Glad I kept my M&P 40c

I have an M&P40 and 40c as well as a PPS 9mm. I wouldn't own a PPS .40 from my research. They seem to be several times more likely to have issues than the 9mms. If you're sold on .40, I'd get the Smith. As far as size, the PPS is a lot smaller and lighter to me-but not enough so to make me stop carrying the 40c. I got the PPS as a SD pistol for my daughter when she moves out.

Guess I forgot to say that my PPS has been perfect with practice stuff and Remington 124 Golden Saber +p.

I've never shot a PPS but I love my M&P 9c. It's not difficult to conceal with a decent holster.

My only issue with my PPS 9mm is finding an IWB holster I like for it. I modified something but it's not a perfect-enough holster to make me reach for the gun as a often-carried pistol.

A long semi-heavy (6 pound?) pull. Not as bad as my KelTec. I'm not a trigger diva since I like a heavy, deliberate double action on carry guns. There's no safety.

I ended going with the M&P40c, and I think we are going to be very happy together.

I was concerned that the difference in size from the FS wasn't going to be that noticeable, but I was very wrong. This thing disappears on my hip OWB, so I'm sure it will be quite stealthy as soon as the new MTAC arrives.

Thanks all for the replies. It helped.

Great decision. Commonality with your full size gun in grip angle, sights, trigger, etc. You can reload with the full size magazines if needed. And I believe the small versions of full size guns are generally more reliable than the recent ultra thin pistols.

Being a olt time steel pistol and revolver lover I have to admit my PPS is a very accurate easy to carry CC pistol. At 15 yards surprising. Very easy to conceal and light. the mag. release takes some getting used to but once mastered not bad and it is ambidextrous..I have a 9m/m so I don't know about the 40's. I stile like steel guns but the PPS isn't bad. My top three CC pistols are still SW 3913-53, HK P7 or SS Kahr 40 with full grip.

DJM, I am late arriving on this thread and now that you have the right gun, (I love my MP9c BTW), I have a question for you. I am 5'9", weigh 181...so how do you maintain a 32" waist??? I'm guessing you aren't pushing 60. (o;

LOL. No, I'm only about halfway to 60. And I guess I was being a little kind to myself; I'm normally a 33" but it has been a hot summer ;-)

I can barely recall having a 32-inch waist, but I am a bit taller than you guys, though not much. :p

Anyway, your choice of the M&P40c is a good one. I do not hear the good things about the PPS in .40 that seem to be the case with that gun in 9x19. It is an odd little gun, at best. People either seem to love it or... :o

Realizing that the 40c concept was a good one, I fought with a couple G27s over the years. They won. Just nasty little guns, in my hands anyway. The S&W is an entirely different animal. I wouldn't want to do so, but I could probably shoot a couple hundred rounds and not suffer. The G27 was just murder.

I am curious about the little Kahrs, and have decided to give one a try. As a gun gets smaller, I think the cartridge should too, so I am considering a PM9. But the 40c is really a very pleasant alternative, if you want to step up the power ladder a bit. I can't see the .40SW cartridge in a gun any smaller than the M&P40c.

I haven't researched it, but I am interested in getting a pocket carry gun but I'm not too fond of the idea of only carrying a .380. Are there many 9mms out there comparable in size to the 380 pocket pistols?

Maybe time for a new thread for this one.

It's your thread so hopefully the thread-police won't mind. :D The PM9 is a 9x19. It is not the same size as Kahr's .380, but it is close. In fact, it is close enough, to me, that it bears investigation - in spite of the high price.

The current price of .380 ammunition really puts the damper on my interest in guns of that caliber. Seems silly that it should be roughly twice as much as 9mm.

I have been reading a bit about the PM9 here and there and do not see too much complaining. Apparently if the manufacturer's break-in instructions are followed, the little guns are pretty serviceable.

I would have to say great choice on the M&P. I love the design of the PPS, but reliability has been questionable since day one.

As for the fullsize, you could probably conceal it with the correct holster. When stacked up side by side, it's almost exactly the size of the G19. And as they say "when God carries, he packs a G19". I carry a FS 9mm everyday. It's all in the holster and belt.

Enjoy the gun, and word is that Ruger will dropping the LCP in 9mm soon. I can't speak on reliability or when, but that's the big rumor... if you are interested in something that small.
