I passed my carry class today.
Three of the other guys had High Points. They all had multiple jams during the range test. Remind me not to get a High Point.

Just what type gun did you use during the course?

I will add, and not throwing cold water on anything, I have yet to see someone fail a CCW class in Louisiana. A few years back I was sitting in on a class that had a man about 70 yrs old. During the class, he dropped his gun twice before getting to the live fire sesssion. Once on the range, he did not know how to reload the gun, could not see the target he was trying to hit, held the gun wrong and was unable to understand instructions. He used an old revolver that was maybe as old as he was and he accidentally discharged it on the range.

He also passed the course.

My thoughts after the course were, it's way too easy. I thought there would be more to it. We barely went into the legal issues. I understand everyone has the right, but if there is no challenge to pass the course, just make it legal for all(except those excluded for past record, substance abuse, etc). They're already excluded anyway. Just my opinion.

I forgot to answer your question. I used a S&W 9VE at the range. One shot kind of sailed on me. The plan was to take my time, but at the last minute I found out each distance was 12 shots in 30 seconds. Even the sailer wasn't bad, about 6" off the group. Plus it started raining just as we started to shoot.

Whatever you do, don't get a High Point.

Sometimes that speaks more on the place giving the course than the state regulations.

I passed in TN with a gun older than me, although, I was 49 at the time and the firearm was 55. But hey, it's a S&W, so I wasn't worried.

The last time I took the CCW class (I'm in Louisiana too), the instructor told us there had been only one person who ever failed the classes there. That person was a woman who failed due to her recurrent-despite-repeated-warnings unsafe range behavior.

But I have to relate one experience when I was renewing my LA driver's license. The older man in front of me at the vision exam couldn't see well enough to even find the vision test in the machine. He was also in line in front of me when we were photographed for our driver's licenses.

I think the course is more of a formality than an education experience or training course. Instructors want the money and will have you go through just enough to satisfy the state requirements.

Assuming there is say 10 in a class and there is an $80 charge per person, then someone is going to make $800 in a day.

In Louisiana, just check what the training requirements are and then compare that with what you received.

Passed the course last weekend myself. Just have to wait until jan 1'st. Iowa becomes a "shall" issue state then But the local sheriff is a prick and not accepting any apps until the 1st. He fought the shall issue thing with all he had. The guy is a control freak.

I'm glad you took and passed the course, good for you! The
people that were scary in the course have at least the gumption to
take charge of their own defense. LEO's can't be everywhere.
I may be all wet with this, but I want to have as many normal
people out there carrying as possible. I'm willing to take my chances
on the old or unco-ordinated. Maybe they won't hit me on the first shot!

Far be it from me to defend the butt-ugliest and most cheaply-built handgun on the planet, but it might not have been the Hi-Points' fault.

During the live fire portion my own class more than a couple of guys had multiple jams with much higher quality firearms due, I assume, to limp-wristing and/or lack of lubrication.

I said it before and I'll say it again:I took a private class on account of not wanting to share space with folks who may have never really handled a weapon in their life!

5 screw flat latch,S&W told me it was made in '53. It was my first handgun.

Congratulations on passing the course. Now I will say, you have decided to join us in your "right" to personal protection....practice, practice and more practice. As a side note here in Arizona when I took my class, one gal did fail the course, she just could not keep the rounds in the target from 5 yards, never made it past that point.
