How many rounds do you carry?
I heard and read the research; the average armed confrontation will last about 2.5 seconds, three to four shots will be fired, and the distance will average 7 yards. But how many rounds do you usually carry?
If I am carrying my KelTech PF9, it'll be eight, all loaded. If I am carrying my S&W 637, then it'll be five in the handgun, three in my pocket. How reasonable does that sound?

15 rounds in my Sigma .40 with 2 15 round clips as backup.
I would rather have too many than to just fall short of what I needed.

Voted five or less, that's more the norm, i.e., one mag or one speed strip. Depends on what poison I'm carrying that day.

Model 39-2
One in the chamber, 8 in the magazine with two 9 rd mags as reloads.
Updated 10-08-2014
I have since changed to a Model 10-5 2 inch or a Model 36 2 inch. I carry two reloads for then either 2 speed strips in a watch pocket or 2 speed loaders in a vest pocket.

My all-the-time 442, 5 plus 6 in the speed strip. My plastic .45, 13 in the mag and one up the spout. I heard someone say a couple years ago that if you need more than 5 rounds, then you need to reevaluate the friends you are hanging out with....guess I need new friends!

I want to get away, not win WWII. I avoid trouble at all cost. I carry 5 in my 649 or 6 in my Colt Officers, 7 in my Commander (not all at the same time!). My wife is also carrying 5 in her Smith (24/7)

Personal belief from work observations:
People, especially the younger generation, have traded accuracy for capacity. Prior to the early 80's, police and virtually everyone else carried six rounds in the gun and maybe a spare six rounds if you were LEO.
The gangbangers went to using cheap high capacity 9mm guns and the police felt outgunned and went to a better quality 9mm. In essence they were wanting the same ammo the street gangs had.
Ok, enter the late 90s and the advent of better calibers and they drop their round count down to maybe 12-14.
The civilians began reasoning their magazines may fail so they need 2 spares.
People pays little attention to what happened in the past as to # of shots fired during altercations. They want to be prepared for what they will encounter. As several great gun experts have said, it only takes one shot when properly placed.
I go into areas of towns that most here would not consider but it is in the nature of the job and I am generally alone.
My gun is a 1911 in .45acp. If I wear a side holster, I have one 8 round magazine in the gun and no spares. If I have a shoulder holster, I carry two spare mags, not for use but rather holster balance.
I trust my equipment. It is the best money can buy. I trust my shooting and while not the best shot in the world, I can hold my own under stress and yes, it has been proven in the past.
Shot placement is more crucial than number of rounds or caliber. If shot placement is marginal, then caliber choice will make a difference. The number of rounds will not be needed because the shooter will likely be hit before they can change a magazine. People do not always have cover at the time they need their gun. The last time I needed mine, I was 100 feet from a car, 50 feet from the nearest dwelling or any concealment and next to one man with an open knife and another facing me with a gun in his waist band.
The winner in a firefight is the one that practices the most and keeps calm, not the one with the most ammo. Since the first fire is the one that counts, if a magazine fails, the shooter has lost the battle already.
Just saying.

Eight total, one in the chamber and seven in the magazine of my M&P 40c. The magazine is marked as having a capacity of ten, but I have been told it will last longer if it is not filled to capacity.

If I'm not expecting trouble, a 642 with 5 and a speed strip with 6.
If I am expecting trouble, I don't go.
If I can't get out of going, a Kimber Ultra CDP with 8 and two 8 round spares. Plus a shotgun if I have room - I'm looking forward to the new Kel-Tec.

Whatever the primary is and a reload for it. So if it's a J, then 10rnds. If it's the G26, then 11+10. If it's the G17 then 17+16. The spare magazines are more for malfunctions than more ammo, though.
Shot placement is the most important. But as I can't predict how bad it will be AND if it doesn't really inconvenience me alot, I'd rather have the extra just in case.

I am most often carrying my Glock 27 (9 rounds of .40)
with an extra 9 round magazine in my offside pocket.
Soon to return to carrying my model 66 snub (heavier, less capacity, shorter barrel, more muzzle blast and louder boom...wait, why am I going to switch
with a snub, I will only carry one extra speed strip.

I've talked through this issue with my instructor and with friends on the force. I carry 12 in my M&P 9c all the time and one spare magazine with another 12 when I'm hiking/working in West Texas. I don't expect to need 24 rounds but I do landscape & nature photograph in some very remote parts of Texas where the closest LEO is 50 - 100 miles away. If I get into a situation where I've gone through one magazine, I'll be using the 2nd to cover my escape while I run like Hell. I'm not looking to get into a gunfight with some coyote from across the border (he'd outgun me easily if the reports are true) but I'd hate to run out of ammo while trying to evade and escape.

I voted for nine through thirteen.
For two reasons. One is capacity. The other is for functionallity.
Anyone, I don't care who they are. If they have been carrying a gun for a while, at one time or another they found that the magazine wasn't seated. Or a round wasn't chambered. They won't admit it. But it happens for various reasons.
Other reasons may include the magazine being dropped during a gun grab and the like.
I ALWAYS carry a spare magazine.

To add:
I also sometimes carry a PF9. I carry a spare mag also.
Just my opinion which may not be worth much. But I consider anyone foolish to simply rely on 5 or 8 rounds.
Being prepared means being prepared for ANY situation. Not just what you think might happen or what statistics show.

It Depends. If primary is a J frame it's 5 plus a 6 round speed strip. If it's a K/L frame it's 6 plus a 6 round speed strip. If it's one of my pony DS's it's 6 plus 6 in the speed strip. The speed strip "Lives" behind my cell phone in a two compartment ballistic nylon phone holster. During the cooler/cold months I carry a Kimber Compact Aluminum 45 ACP OWB under a jacket plus an 8 round Wilson as a reload. My truck gun is a block 19 with two spare mags from a block 17 tucked in the door pocket.

When I carry my Model 60 or 4" 10-10 I also carry two 6 round speed strips. When I carry my Makarov, one extra magazine, since I only have one extra right now.
I found that Lee Dungarees have two pockets on them that make perfect sized and secure storage spots for Speed Strips or a Makarov magazine.

If just the 442, the 5 in the gun and 6 more in an MTM ammo wallet. If the 4" .357, 6 in the gun and 6 in a 2x2x2 De Santis pouch. Whatever it is, always a full reload. For work it used to be a double Safariland split six speedloader carrier with Comp II speedloaders, but the carrier wore out and is out of production now. It was a nice CCW arrangement for speedloaders.

I always carry at least one reload wheter that's a 5/6 speed loader or another 8/15 rd mag. How and where I'm carrying will also dictate how much. At home loungeing around, 442 in pocket with an extra speed loader. Down range, cocked and locked M1911A1 or M9 with either 105/106 rds carried on belt (then there's the M4 or M14 mags).
CD
Have 105 rds of .45 ball on belt.

Off on a quick roadie in just a bit and carrying my M60 with a speed strip (all 6 rounds) in my pocket and a drop pouch on my belt with 6 more. Both vehicles have a speedloader in the center console.
Will be in, and about, Washington, DC, and am confident in my preparedness.
Be safe.
Note: The drop pouch is very inconspicuous...very.

I carry a model 642 with 1 speed strip loaded with 5 rounds for 10 total. The 5 in the revolver are to get me out of a tight spot. The speed strip is so I am ready if more trouble shows up before I can leave. I have noticed that I could say I carry 1000 rounds of ammo and someone would point out what would happen if I was assaulted by 1001 bad guys.

Am appreciating the advice as I am fairly new to concealed carry. I think I will up my number of cartridges to make two full loads in either gun I might carry. I've already ordered a second magazine for the PF9 and will get a speed loader or similar device for the S&W 637.
Thanks!

The amount I carry is dependant on the firearm I am carrying. Semi-auto, it's magazine plus one in chamber and one spare mag. Could be 15, 24, 30 or 34. If I am carrying a snubbie, then it's 15.

Another option is speed strips.
Model 580 Speed Strips™ Bianchi Leather Holsters
Two at six rounds each, fit very nicely in a cell phone pouch

The same as A10 and Steve in Vermont. A J frame and 6 extra in a Bianchi speed strip. Usually in an ankle rig as few individuals ever look that low.

More than I'm likely to ever need at one time. My primary carry guns all hold at least 8 rounds, and the two I carry most often as a primary hold 9 and 10. I carry two backup mags, and usually a backup gun with one reload for it. Do I ever expect to fire more than 4 or 5 rounds in a gunfight? Of course not, but Mr. Murphy has accompanied me to enough shooting matches and other places that I will be without any surprise whatever if a magazine dumps a base plate, a slide stop or extractor breaks, or a squib gets a bullet stuck between cylinder and barrel at the least opportune moment. I can carry what I do carry comfortably enough, so I figure, why not?

My EDC is a SW40GVE and I carry it fully loaded (14+1) at all times, and I always carry at least one fully-loaded spare magazine. When you get right down to it, the vast majority of malfunctions experienced with semi-automatic pistols stem from either a improperly seated magazine, or a defective/broken magazine. Either condition can quickly turn your multi-shot master blaster into a single shot paperweight, and in the case of a defective or broken magazine, the only way to make the gun run again is to insert a properly working magazine. This is my primary reason for carrying a spare magazine; having a spare "part" readily available to get the gun running again in the event of a "break down".
Statistically speaking, most gunfights involve 3 or less shots being fired. That said, in today's complex tactical environment, we are seeing more and more cases where criminals attack in groups of 2, 3, or more, and in some cases, the criminals are dressed in body armor. In a nutshell, we can't afford to rely on statistical probability alone as the determining factor for how much ammunition we may, or may not need. Something I've said to my students before, and I'll repeat here; unless you are going swimming, there is really no such thing as "too much" ammunition. On the other hand, "too little" ammunition is quite quantifiable. This is my secondary reason for carrying a spare magazine; having spare ammunition available if the initial 15 rounds isn't enough.
I can't recall ever hearing a gunfight survivor saying, "I wish I would have had less ammunition with me".

My EDC is 11 in the pistol (no safety) and 10 in the spare mag. I figure even if I hit the BG with "only" one .40 S&W and miss with the other 20 rds, I'll still should be able to kick his ***.

If you count the ones in the revolver, then it would be 18 rounds for me as I carry two HK 10 speed loaders. When I voted I was thinking spares and voted nine through fourteen.

I just read an FBI report on handgun effectiveness and posted it (twice ) in other threads.
The report states the force from a 9mm slug is equivalent to a one pound weight dropped from a height of 6 feet, and a .45acp is equivalent to a one pound weight dropped from 11.5 feet.
The holes made by each slug if they are not wrapped up in cloth to limit expansion or deflected only affects 2% of the body tissue. The chance that any bullet will cause major bleeding unless it hits the brain or spine or major artery is quite small. Thus the need for multiple strikes is very real.
Now couple that with running, ducking and possible drug use (on the perps part ) and I'm rethinking my 6 shot capacity...
