"crimes of opportunity" in So. Az. -a reminder to pay attention
This week, in Phoenix, two women unloading groceries in their driveway were clubbed and robbed by two men who just showed up suddenly.
Just this morning in Phoenix, a women backing out of her driveway at 4AM was accosted by a carjacker, and shot and slightly wounded as she escaped up the street and drove into a convenience store for help.
In Tucson this week, two men barged in thru a unlocked garage door and attempted to rob (and perhaps worse) a woman and her daughter. The daughter got her gun and fired. The bad guys fled. (good for her-life saving defensive actions!)
What I've gotten from these reports (sketchy as usual- thanks to the lame local media) is the suddenness of the bad guy's attacks.
I need to remember to keep an eye out, no matter where I am; in the driveway, the store parking lot, or anywhere else. Bad things can happen fast. And of course, like the decisive daughter, have a firearm at hand.

Sudden for sure. But all this action in AZ? What is happening? I thought AZ was law and order central. Open carry. Western tradition. Laced up and tiddy.

mgo,
That's good advice wherever you are, thanks for reminding me.
I've noticed that if you're having physical/medical problems, you
may become oblivious to your surroundings. Trouble doesn't take
days off! I'll remember to be more alert. TACC1

That was before obuma sued for Bill 1070 & the BATFE illegally sold thousands of guns to the Mexican gangsters. Now Arizona has a full-time job defending our borders against illegals packing weapons & Washington polititians packing commie agendas.

This type behavior is taking place in every part of the country. AZ does not have the patent on crime.
Right now, this area is seeing major crimes against people, banks and convenience stores. We also are experiencing something I consider unusual. In the last three weeks, we have had three husbands fatally shoot their wives and then kill themselves. The first to do it was a well known pastor with a radio show and very anti violent teachings. The next lived just a couple blocks from the first. Then yesterday there was another man that killed his wife and himself because she wanted a divorce.
I think we are seeing more of this type behavior due to the economic and employment situation. People are at the end of their rope. Criminals just want more than what the government is giving them.
Crime is everywhere and we all need to be vigilant.

I'm not sure it's just the economics that are the major cause of violence. People who lived through the depression don't recall this type of behavior. But then almost everyone was in the same situation. My biggest concern is for the future. Is this a prelude to more violence in our society?

Steve, I am not a historian but I do not think we had the same type people back during the depression. Fewer living off the government and most wanted to be self supporting. Fewer people addicted to drugs, fewer people having kids that are under government programs.
This is now a nation of "Give Me" rather than workers. When they cannot live on what is given to them, they take it from others.
I look for it to only get worse.

There's some nice houses for sale around here, crime is almost non existent, and everyone carries.
If it weren't for the high taxes, I'd never move.

...defending against attacking illegals packing weapons SUPPLIED by Washington....
I love living in AZ, and what is happening here really gets my goat.
It doesn't help crime stats when the country's economy is in the toilet, and AZ has it worse than many for local economics as well. A lot of people are turning to drugs, which stimulates demand, which increases imports, which....... on and on....

As in one of the examples, sometimes things go badly for the assailant, as was the case recently in Dayton, where the two moron druggies tried to rob the guy in the gas station. Few things modify behavior as well as two .45s to the stomach.
These things show just how stupid are those who (like the City Council President of Canton, OH) oppose concealed carry. He's against people carrying guns in "bad areas". I've got news for you, no matter where you are, if you aren't prepared to protect YOURSELF, you just aren't going to get protected AT ALL. I don't want my robbery and or murder investigated. I want them PREVENTED, in the act, if necessary. The ONLY person who's going to do that is ME.

Any time I'm in the garage .. mowing the grass or yard working ... I have either my m60 or cs45. If I'm in the house .. they are next to me under a couch pillow or on the end table. My wife always asks me .. why and I tell her .. I'm too old to run and get it .

"Illegals packing weapons & Washinton polititians packing commie agendas..."
That deserved repeating!

Smart man. This area had two murders last night. One was from a home invasion, killed the man's wife and he is in critical condition. Second fatal home invasion this week.
I am seldom without my sidearm. Sitting in my home, it is always next to me.
It is sad people have to resort to carrying for protection but the nation has came to where it is pretty much required.

Oldman45, I'm afraid you are entirely correct with your assessment of people today. It would appear, from the news reports, that the entire developed world is melting down financially and that the feeble " recovery " we are in is about to reverse as well. This will cause more of the criminal element to feel emboldened to take what they want from those that appear to have it. It's going to get real ugly. I live in the Detroit area and the murder rate is climbing from last year's numbers and theft & robbery is on the rise as well. Just tonight I told my wife that she is forbidden to go on the Detroit side of Telegraph Road ( western city limits of Detroit) with out me, for any reason. I no longer feel that carrying a weapon is a precaution, but rather a necessity. It seems that in the last decade and a half that the bad guys not only want what you have, they want no witnesses left behind as well.
Hang on tight; it's going to be a few more rough years!!

Oldman45, I think you are right on. Do you remember the expression "Let every tub stand on its own bottom"?
