Default Crimson Trace for 640 cc?

I have a 640-1 which is my primary cc and am considering installing Crimson Trace. However, I have no experience with this device and wonder if anyone out there has. I like everything about the gun, except for the front sight, (and getting older doesn't help).

I've got a set of Crimson Trace LG-105s on my BUG, a 360, an dI think they're great. I like knowing that I can put rounds on target from almost any position without using the sights.

Thumbs up

I have all three models for J frames 405's are my favorites. they conceal good and have cushion on backstrap for recoil. They really speed shot and accuracy both for me. It is kinda slow shooting J frame with bifocals.

Sir, two friends of mine have the CT grips on their 642s and like them. Both like the laser for longer shots or conditions where they can't see the gun's iron sights. The laser is easily engaged and can be zeroed to the gun's sights. Battery life seems to be pretty long--both have had their guns a couple years now, and they're still on their original batteries.

As stocks, the CTs are surprisingly comfortable. The rubber-covered backstrap takes a lot of the sting out of those little airweight guns.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Let me add a thumbs up for CT lasergrips. I have the 405's on my M638 and they actually allow me to hit something beyond point blank range. They might as well as left the sights off my gun as it doesn't shoot where the sights point - even if my old eyes could see them.

I find the laser useful both day and night - much better than conventional night sights.

IMHO, the laser is an order of magnitude improvement in the J frame.

The Crimson Trace website has some good videos on tactics.

My only complaint is that they don't make them for the single stack or the compact double-stack 3G's (but I'm working on that).

I have Crimson Trace on my 642, 1911 Colt Defender, and 1911 Caspian. I also have Lasermax on my 1911 Caspian (test mule), and InsightTec on my 380 Body Guard. I have 5 deployments under my belt to Iraq where I used Crimson Trace on my issued 9mm.
Out of all of them the Crimson Trace was the easiest, most user friendly of them all to use.

Just my opinion.

I have a 340 CT and find the crimson trace usefull for practice, but a handicap in the real world. I cannot quickly see the little red dot in the daylight and lost time in sight alinment can be deadly. The XS Tritium Night sight I find excellent for quick target acquisition.

Sorry Hook, I don't follow your logic. Seeing the red dot on the target replaces sight alignment. Place the dot - pull the trigger. No need to line up a sight with the dot.
If you can't see the dot in daylight, you use your sights which take the amount of time it takes whether you have CT's or not.

I have to be misunderstanding your statement.

No logic here ... simply what I experience. In daylight I have to search for that little red dot. That takes time. During this time I am focusede on seeking that little red dot, not the target (personally in bright California sunlight I find it very hard to see).

After practice, using the CT grips, I change to regular grips for my J-Frame. The 340 CT has the tritium XS front sight. In a bad encounter I hardly am thinking in terms of bullseye sight alignment. A quick target acquisition is in my opinion what is in order. Since 7 yards and less is pretty much the range I am concerned with, I am content to use the large XS white circle as my sight and it is quick to focus on target ... close enough for inside 7 yards anyway.

Simply put, no logic, I personally find it quicker to 'Point shoot' with the J-Frame inside 7 yards, rather that take time trying to find that little red dot. The little red dot is not my target and I see no purpose in giving any time, or energy to it in what may be a very serious situation.

Different strokes for different folks.

Understood and agree in daylight. Forget the CT, go for the sights.

In the dark however, with the CT you can acquire your target as soon as you clear leather (from waist height, for instance). I see this as an advantage.

Night sights are cool, too. It's all about practicing what one intends to do in the real world.

Like you said, different strokes ...
