Default OWB - holster for S&W 642

I searched the forums and there is a lot of talk for IWB holster, but I am looking for OWB. I need to carry this way while walking in the woods or when day hiking. It is more comfortable. Nylon would be preferable.

Any help is appreciated.

Don't have experience with a nylon owb, but I do like my Don Hume JIT for my LCR. You can get one for a J frame for ~$30. Only consideration might be if you want a thumb strap or other retention devise if you may be going through grabby brush.

It's leather, not nylon, but I would recommend the Blackhawk Speed Classic. Only made for J Frames, great retention without a strap and only costs about $20 online.

The thumb-break retention strap on the Bianchi holster at the top secures the gun by the triggerguard. It would make a good OWB woods/hiking holster...

Blackhawk makes a Serpa for the J Frame. I would part with mine.

I replaced it with a Lobo Model 1 Pancake with Detail Boning and an Inner Hammer Shield. It is a great holster.

The Galco Concealeable is a great OWB holster. Don't have any experience with nylon holsters.

Here's a horsehide one I was experimenting with.....I tried the snap on the belt loop for easy on/off...but I decided I didn't trust the snap, so I epoxied the snap closed....makes a great OWB now...

Another JIT Slide fan here. Inexpensive and works better than similar offerings from others. Last I checked they were $22 plus shipping from GunnersAlley.

Bit more upscale is the 721OT from Hume.

I've found Don Hume to offer a little better design at a little less expense than the rest. GunnersAlley prices them below factory plus only charges actual shipping.

I've used the Bianchi 55L mentioned uptopic by BlackSheep and it works OK. Pretty much limited to 1" belts and it flops around a bit unless you cinch up tight. The retention snap does work OK tho it can get loose after a while; just reform it or add a thin piece of leather to the inside of the strap. Less of a problem when you only have one Centennial, as the different models vary slightly.

Hope this helps a bit.

Regards,

Pat

I just picked up a Blackhawk Speed Classic the other day for my 637, not a great looking holster but has very good retention and will hold me over until I decide between a Lobo enhanced pancake or enhanced avenger. When I'm not carrying OWB my 637 resides in my Alessi Talon IWB.

I'm looking for a holster for my 442 for the exact same reason as the OP. Total concealment is not an issue. I have a pocket holster for that. I really don't want a pancake holster or a "high ride" holster. Any pics of the back of the Bianchi 55L mentioned above. Depending on its belt loop, it may or may not work for me.

I have been using a Galco combat master for my snubby for quite a few years....really excellent quality and easy access...open top...no thumb break...etc....to get in the way.

A nice looking holster. How about retention?

The Galco Combat Master is an excellent high ride pancake holster. Used to be called the Speed Master.
