Just to be clear: we're talking EDCK for self-defense purposes here, right? Not pocketknife-carry for general non-lethal tasks, right? In other words, we're talking edged weapon, not edged tool?

In that case, I confess: I don't have an EDCK.

That's because I know I could shoot if I had to. And I know I could continue to shoot until the threat had been stopped.

But I'm no knife fighter. Truth to tell, I'm squeamish about the idea of using a knife on someone. I don't think I could do it. So if it ever comes down to me vs. somebody, that's why I have my EDC.

Also, I'm a lot less likely to have my EDC turned on me than an EDCK that I'm not confident about using.

Guess it all comes down to knowing one's limitations.

As for those who do EDCK, and have the training and the ability, my hat's off to you. And I pity the fool who thinks he can take you on in close quarters and win.

Same for the one who thinks I'm not armed, and thus an easy mark. He's in for a bad day.

Hope I don't have to turn in my man-card for admitting all this.

Here are my EDCK"s. The Bear Moc knife I bought off of a
Mac Tool truck years ago. Its been a handy little knife. The
Gerber unit was purchased at Wally World. One of the most
useful edged tools I've ever had. Only about ten bucks, the
replacement blades are cheap so whenever it starts getting
dull I just pop a new one in. I keep one in my range bag, too.

Good point vigil.

I was taught some hand to hand fighting in the army, but I learned a lot more in martial arts training. My dojo master is an eighth degree (maybe ninth by now) who travels the country teaching combat fighting to elite groups. He really emphasized the value of using anything around you as a weapon, and I sure learned how deadly a knife can be.

I'd much rather be shot than stabbed. And I'd much rather be shot several times than have to fight close quarters with an accomplished knife fighter.

But I also know the importance of carrying a handy back-up in a good sturdy knife.

Besides, you can't clean your finger nails with a .40 cal!

I used to have a little no-name fixed-blade that hid under an untucked shirt quite easily. Lent it to a family member a year and a half ago, haven't seen it since, now it's often as not a Kabar or an old butterfly knife, been looking at some of those TDIs lately. I sometimes carry a little collapsible baton or a walking stick. I believe you've gotta have something for close quarters.
